Ultimate Coffee Date: March 2019

Welcome to the Ultimate Coffee Date! I know February is the shortest month of the year, but I’m almost unwilling to believe that it’s already March. Where has the time gone?!

Ultimate Coffee Date: March 2019

If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d…tell you that since we last spoke, I’ve sent out my CVs into the universe, finished 2 phone interviews and gotten 4 on-site interviews so far that I’m rather excited about!

The caveat is that I’m still in residency, so my schedule is definitely not the best when it comes to finding available dates, especially when I have to fly across the country but not miss more than 80% (aka 2 days) out of my 2-week rotations. I also have less than 2 months left to study for boards and I’m kinda wistfully hoping I can get them done prior to going on boards study hibernation so I don’t end up using my vacation for em’, but…we’ll see.

If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d…tell you that I have a group of people to hang out with now! I say this like I didn’t before, which was vaguely true in the sense that I do have a number of friends here, most of which I hang out with one-on-one. Until now though, none of them were in my actual residency program because everyone’s always busy, but lately, I’ve been spending a lot more time with my interns! We’ve been congregating at one of their apartments (that the four of us have jokingly taken to referring to as “our” apartment) to make food and be cool!

Past gatherings thus far have included making Vietnamese spring rolls (recipe coming up soon), Vietnamese beef vermicelli bowls (recipe also coming up soon), matcha bread, mochi squares, and most recently, a dumpling party (from scratch!) to celebrate Lunar New Year! We have a bunch of other ideas in the works, so they’ll probably be popping up all over the blog once I find the time to write em’ all down! :]

Here are some sneak previews! :]

I’ve also been trying to balance residency + my extra curriculars (rock climbing, aerial silks, salsa) + studying with also trying to spend more time with the friends I’ve made out here before I move back to the other side of the country. Life is a constant balancing act though, isn’t it? (Good thing I’ve had a lot of practice!)

If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d…tell you that although I can’t go to the sports medicine conference this year, I can present my poster at the NJ Academy of Family Physicians conference in June this year, so I suppose that’ll be my compromise? Definitely better than nothing!

For the record, I was done with winter before it even started, but hot food has definitely been my source of comfort this winter! The ones that top my list = noodle bowls (e.g. pho, ramen, Taiwanese beef noodles…) or hot pot!

  3. I don’t have any interview advice for your field in particular, but I think that having confidence and being genuinely excited about the work goes far, and you should nail those qualifications! Fingers crossed you land where you want to be. Your food looks yummy. I definitely go for soups and such.

    1. haha, I like to think it’ll calm down someday! Fingers crossed that the on-site ones go super well! :D!!

  10. What topic is your poster on?

    1. It’s a case presentation on a patient who presented with pseudogout in their shoulder following a flu vaccine! I still have to put the actual poster together for the conference in June since I can’t go to the one in April, so hoping to get started on that once I’m done with interviews and more on track with boards studying!

As someone who coaches people on interviews for a living, adhere to the duty statement! If they’re stating keywords that you have done in other places, make sure you let them know your expertise. As long as there are bullet points or percentages of your work, you’ll always have something to talk about! When you are crafting your tailored cvs and applications, you’re preparing yourself on what you’ll be saying during those interviews. Let me know if you want to do a remote mock interview!

    1. Thank you! I really appreciate it! I guess it’s a plus that the flight is 6 hours long–I’ll have time to craft my responses and catch up on some sleep! :P

  13. I’ll be excited to see where you end up! And congrats on having your poster accepted for presentation. I totally expect you to take the medical world by storm!

    1. Thank you! :]! Fingers crossed!

  14. It sounds like your job search is going well! I’m so impressed that you keep up with blogging during residency too!!

    1. haha, I’ve definitely been slacking lately but hoping to pick it back up once things wind down a little in terms of hectic-ness!

  15. my favorite cold weather dish is Minnesota Winter Chili – it’s just so, so divine (and vegan)!!

my only interview advise is to just do your best and be yourself! most employers can read through non-genuine answers or answers that “sound like” the ones interviewees think they want to hear. You are going to get the right job at the right time! I can’t wait to hear all about it! hopefully it won’t be too challenging to schedule those things!

I don’t have a lot of friends (outside of running friends) so finding a group of cool people to hang out with is a GREAT thing!

    1. Ooo, I’ve never had that but I’m gonna have to try it sometime! :]

Thank you! I definitely hope so! I’m kinda worried about the scheduling, but really hoping that things will work out!

Definitely agreed! I’ve been moving around so much in the last several years that it’s been hard staying in contact with even my close friends across the country (thankfully they’ve been very understanding, and it’s nice to have good ones here too)! :]

  16. I did really well treating job interviews as if I was interviewing them. Not being arrogant, but going into it with the idea of wanting to know more if they were the right fit for me. Having questions prepared and not being nervous about if they’d like me.

    1. That’s definitely not arrogant! Knowing what they’re like and whether or not they’re a right fit is big for me too; I just gotta work on that mentality and prepare some more questions! :]

  17. Good luck with your interviews! I am sure you will do great! I like to think of it as having a conversation….don’t build it up too much or put pressure on yourself!

That’s great that you have more friends to hang out with – your cooking adventures sound so fun!

    1. The interviews that are like conversations are the best ones! <3 I'm definitely hoping all of em' end up like that (fingers crossed)!

They really have been! We have so many more in the works! :D

  18. Wow, this is an exciting season of life–changes ahead! Who knows where you’ll be next?! Teleportation would be really, really convenient though. Somebody needs to invent that for real.

    1. haha, hopefully I’ll figure it all out by graduation! :P

That would be so, so nice! *-*

  19. Look at that cute wittle cat face! Cat pics always get me lol. Good luck on your job hunt! Nothing terrifies me more than job searching. I especially don’t like phone interview….. I would much rather do interviews face to face so I can see the interviewers reaction to what I’m saying!

    1. haha, me too!

Forreals–I feel like I’m not prepared to interview for real life, but clearly I’m gonna have to learn soon! :P I’d rather do face to face too–it’s so hard to read people over the phone!
