Ultimate Coffee Date: January 2024

Welcome to the very first Ultimate Coffee Date of 2024! It’s already another new year! I’m on the tail end of my 7th straight day of working, so I’m super excited to have a weekend soon!

Ultimate Coffee Date: January 2024

I took Tofu back to my parents’ place for the holidays and he did so well! We took him all over and he especially loved the nearby park. <3

If we were having coffee/tea today, Iā€™d tell you that…I’ve been trying to make my home office more cozy! Home office is probably misleading since I really only work in there 1x every 2 weeks, but I do most of my gaming/reading/hanging out in there when I’m home. I sectioned out one of the built-in bookshelf spaces for a tea area and have another little cart dedicated to snacks.

It’s not really organized yet, but this is my current tea/hot cocoa/honey shelf!

I have a bar cart that I got for free from someone who moved to Australia and I’m hoping to turn it into something like this (it’s so pretty! *-* )! It’s going to be my tea trolley once I’m done with it. :]!

If we were having coffee/tea today, Iā€™d tell you that…one of my patients is looking for someone to adopt her dog and I’ve been asking around for her, but low-key want to adopt her. (I realize I can’t do this with every pet I meet,Ā  but the pull is strong for sure. :'( )

I tried asking my friends to talk me down but they’re all enablers and told me Tofu would love a friend, haha. (They’re not wrong…) To be continued, haha.

Ā If we were having coffee/tea today, Iā€™d tell you that…I managed to read 33 books last year! I’m going to aim for 2 books per month again for this yearĀ  + we’ll see if I manage to surpass it again!

  • Cassandra in Reverse, by Holly Smale – A neurodivergent woman finds herself in a “Groundhog Day”-esque situation + later realizes she can travel through time. The book follows her attempts to right different perceived “wrongs” in her life. The main character wasn’t my favorite, but it was still an interesting premise + I liked the Greek mythology references.
  • You and Me, Always – by Jill Mansell – This book starts off with the main character, Lily, who turns 25 and opens the very last letter her late mother wrote to her. You meet the cast of characters in her life and a story that slowly unfolds in their small Cotswold village. If you’re looking for an easy, enjoyable feel-good read, this one will be perfect for you!
  • The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, by Suzanne Collins – Since the movie recently came out and I have yet to read the book, I figured I should get to it! This is essentially the prequel to the Hunger Games trilogy and looks into what President Snow’s teenage years were like. (It should probably come as no surprise to anyone that he was a total psychopath…)
  • The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches, by Sangu Mandanna – I found out about this book from Flour & Fiction (run by my friend’s friend’s sister — she’s behind the Raspberry Rosewater Cheesecakes!)! It’s part of her pumpkin bread baking kit (more about that later!) and is about a young witch trying to find her way in the world — it’s the epitome of a cozy read. I wanted to jump into the book to hang out with everyone. <3
  • The Woman in the Library, by Sulari Gentill – This is a murder mystery story within a story — four strangers sitting at the same table when they hear a terrified scream. One of them is the murderer. I did nottt see it coming.
  • The It Girl, by Ruth Ware – 10 years after the murder of Hannah’s best friend, a journalist comes knocking and presents information that suggests the murderer who was convicted (and who recently just passed) may have been innocent.

There have been some changes to my plant shelf. The giant snake plant is still doing well, but I moved him closer to the window. My black thumbs unfortunately couldn’t keep the cyclamen + anthurium alive, but I’m apparently okay at keeping snake plants, ZZ plants, oxalis + inchplants alive! Probably because they thrive on neglect, but I’ll take it.

  1. A waterfall in Death Valley? Really? That might be the only reason I’d go there, LOL!

My husband lets me use the desktop sometimes, but otherwise he’s completely taken over our office. Which I don’t think is fair, because when I was working (well, at least being paid to work), I let him have a space in MY office.

There was a time I had 2 cats & 2 dogs, even a couple of years when I was handling them all on my lonesome . . . I don’t know how I did it. I swear Bandit alone sucks up all my time now! Good luck on deciding. :)

    1. It’s actually so pretty there! Just definitely avoid it in the summertime, haha. :P

That definitely sounds unfair! :( Commandeer it back!!

That sounds like a handful for sure! If I weren’t working full-time (+ didn’t love to travel so much..), I feel like it’d be more feasible, but right now…sigh, haha.

  2. We tried sand sledding in Dubai last year and it was so much fun and different. Wow you managed to read a lot of books last year despite your busy schedule. Happy new year and thanks for popping in to catch up

    1. Ahh, I’d love to go there someday too!

A lot of em’ were audiobooks because I’ve discovered this tends to make me hate my commute/the traffic a lot less! :P Happy new year!

  3. Ooh, if you rehab that tea trolley I want to see the finished product! The examples in the link are beautiful.
I wanted to read The Woman in the Library this year but never got to it- I think I had it out of the library but returned it unread. It sounds good so I’m putting it back on my TBR!
Enjoy your time off… you deserve it. Seven days in a row is a killer schedule.

    1. I’ll definitely be sharing if it isn’t a total disaster! Really hoping it turns out like that — it’s so, so pretty! *-*

If you get to reading it, let me know! The story-within-a-story approach was really cool.

Thank you! I’m really looking forward to it!

  4. 33 books is impressive – my reading really fell off this year, but I want to change that. I miss reading. I’m going to check out some of the titles you have listed. Thanks for the suggestions!

    1. Listening to audiobooks helped out a lottt with that! My commute is ~ 40-60min each way depending on traffic so it definitely helped to pass the time. I hope you get to read more this year! :]

  5. That is awesome that you read so many books last year! My goal this year is to read 24. I know I can do it.

    1. Yay! That’s my goal too (bonus points to self if I surpass it :D ) — we got this!!

  6. Iā€™m always looking for a good book. I tell myself I donā€™t like supernatural books, but I really liked Wrong Place, Wrong Time (mystery with a time warp) and Remarkably Bright Creatures.

Thanks for joining us for coffee!

PS Will you be introducing your new dog next month? <3

    1. Ooo, I haven’t heard of either of those but I’m adding em’ to my to-read list! They both sound really interesting. :]

I want tooooo but I really shouldn’t. But my heart!!! :'(

  7. That tea trolley looks like a great project! Iā€™m an art geek, so Iā€™ve done a lot of DIY projects on reclaimed finds. Happy New Year! I hope 2024 is a great year for you :-)

    1. That’s awesome! I’m hoping to do that more — hoping the tea trolley will be a success! :P

  8. Look at that sweet puppy! I would want to take him too!

Cute tea trolley idea! I can’t wait to see the finished result!

Right now I am reading The Pale-Faced Lie, by David Crow. It’s very emotional, but well written.

We had kind of a low key Christmas, and then took a vacation for Mr PugRunner’s 50th (his birthday is January 1). The destination was the Florida Keys and he had a good time.

    1. This is why I could only ever volunteer at rescues and not at shelters — I’d wanna bring em’ all home!

I’ll definitely post what it looks like if it’s not a disaster by the time I’m done! :D..

I’ll be adding that to my to-read list.

Happy belated birthday to him! Glad he had a good time + hope this year is good to you! :]

  9. What a great idea for the tea and snack area for your at home office space!

We also pretty much want to adopt every cat that needs a home but as we already have 5ā€¦ we have to draw a line somewhere haha!

We have quite a few furniture pieces that we have traded other pieces for or just salvaged and then fixed. I prefer to buy something old and fix it than new furniture.

I donā€™t have any goals yetā€¦ first I need to sort out the most stressful situation I have and then maybe I can work on my fitness goals as well. But first my mental healthā€¦

    1. I can definitely relate! I only have a dog and a cat but since they do not get along, I feel like me adding more animals to the mix would be a really bad idea. :[ Still always tempted though, haha.

I’m the same way! I feel like the new ones aren’t as well made anymore (or if they are, I’m not wealthy enough to be able to purchase those, haha ._. ).

I really hope your work situation gets better soon!!
