Ultimate Coffee Date: October 2023

Welcome to another Ultimate Coffee Date! Only a couple months left of this year left?!

Ultimate Coffee Date: October 2023

If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d tell you that…once upon a time, I got to see Kina Grannis in a concert in Philly. I found out she would be touring in San Francisco last month so I snagged a desk to work at WeWork for the day so that I’d be able to make it there in time.

Her mom was unfortunately diagnosed with a rare bone marrow cancer and they’re trying to find a donor right now so that she can receive a stem cell transplant. All it takes is a cheek swab!

If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d tell you that… I also saw The Rose in concert earlier this week! (They’re a Korean alternative rock band!) I’d only heard of em’ recently from my friend (aka the counterpart to my Fat Girl Wednesdays), but it was a lot of fun!

I also recently went to a Lifestyle Medicine conference and the food was glorious!

If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d tell you that…I set a goal earlier this year to read 20 books for the year and somehow managed to surpass it (I guess joining a book club has helped! :P ), so I’ll be sharing my book mini-reviews + linking up with Lauren over at Shooting Stars Mag on Tuesday for her “My Month is Booked” linkup!

This past month, I finished reading…

  • The Paris Apartment, by Lucy Foley – A “locked room” mystery about a woman who goes to crash with her half-brother at his apartment only to find him missing + all his neighbors seem vaguely hostile and extra shifty. It’s harder for me to enjoy a book when I don’t like or relate to any of the characters. The story felt somewhat convoluted  and perhaps just longer than it had to be, but I did still finish it.
  • Hello Sunshine, by Laura Dave – A fun and quick read about a culinary influencer who seems to have everything going for her – a ton of followers, best-selling cookbooks, an awesome husband, an upcoming Food Network deal…until she gets hacked and ends up losing everything. I liked how this delved into what it’s like to try to be yourself and “real” in this current day and age. I very much miss when it was just posting to post and things felt more authentic and not so “curated” on social media.
  • A Pho Love Story, by Loan Le – A modern-day YA book rom-com between two feuding Vietnamese families with restaurants across the street from each other. It was really cool to see a book with so much Vietnamese representation! Due to my trip to Vietnam earlier this year, I have extra love and adoration for Vietnamese food and the descriptions of food in here made me super hungry.

I got to go to a Yelp Elite event recently too — yay for free food! <3

End-of-Month Recap

  • Check out one of our other hikes from Shenandoah National Park — Dark Hollow Falls!
  • I used to live right next to the Greenbrier State Forest but due to study guilt, only really ever hiked 1  trail (Youngs Nature Trail) while I was living there. Better late than never though – I went back last year and hiked the Rocky Ridge Trail!
  • I went back to the New River Gorge National Park to hike the Long Point Trail, which has super pretty panoramic views of the New River Gorge Bridge!
  • Another fun trail that’s a great workout in the national park — the Kaymoor Miners Trail!

  • Have you read anything this year? Any favorites? I’m always looking for more reading inspiration! :]
  • Have you been to any concerts this year?

  1. Fun to catch up with you for virtual coffee. I’m jealous of all of the awesome hiking. So flat here as you know!

I saw First Aid Kit and Glenn Hansard this summer. It’s so fun to see live music again!

    1. Thanks for stopping by! :] I keep meaning to do more of it — hopefully once things are a little less hectic, I’ll actually reach my goal of 1-2 hikes per month! :P

Yay, that’s awesome! I haven’t been to any concerts since 2018 so it was really nice to get to go again! :]

  2. Love the new book feature. Really looking forward to your reads and reviews, I have read so many great books lately. Love anything Frieda McFadden for a quick thriller fix

    1. Aww, yay! I’m always on the lookout for more — I’ll have to check out Frieda McFadden! :]

    1. I was so impressed by the food! It was all plant-based and super flavorful. I may be working on getting my certification in Lifestyle Medicine next year. :]

  4. I read The Paris Apartment and enjoyed it- but I didn’t love it. I get what you’re saying about the characters. Hello Sunshine sounds interesting!
All your hiking sounds amazing. You got out to some beautiful trails!

    1. Despite it all, I still wanted to know what happened so still a win, hehe.

Thank you! It’s so gorgeous out there! *-*

  5. You are such a busy gal! Great job on getting al those books read; you’re well ahead of me on that number!

    1. Audiobooks have helped a lot in getting me to read (also great for passing the time with my commute! :P )!

  6. Good for you for getting to see some concerts! It’s been a pretty dry summer here in that respect. I confess I put down The Paris Apartment. Just could not get into it.

    1. I contemplated doing that too, but ultimately decided that since I started it, I might as well finish it, haha. There was a little twist near the end that made it kinda worth it-ish? hehe..

  8. WeWork! I just watched the show WeCrashed about the rise and fall of the founders. Crazy!

The first half of the year was great for me and reading, the second half not so much.

I’m not a huge concert fan, but we did see Jason Mraz this year. We also went to a 90s music festival and another music fest, too. Mraz was wonderful, the other were fine.

    1. Oo, I haven’t seen/heard of that — I’ll have to look into it!

Yay for the first half at least! Life does have a way of throwing things in the way.

I’m not the biggest fan of when it’s supersuper loud/crowded, but I’ve found I’m definitely a fan of smaller/more intimate ones!

  9. Who is Tofu’s friend?

That food from your conference does look yummy!

We loved our time in SNP last year. So beautiful!

    1. Her name’s Korra! She’s a husky/shepherd rescue who belongs to our friends. :]!

It was really good + has even kindasorta inspired me to start cooking (at long last) again!

  10. That is great that you surpassed your goal!! I’ve also heard of The Paris Apartment and it is on my list of books to read. Years ago I tried to register with Be The Match but couldn’t because I was over 40. I found that to be odd.

    1. I think it’s unfortunately because they’ve found that cells from younger donors (e.g. 18-35) tends to lead to better long-term survival for patients after transplant. :[ But thank you for trying!!

  11. Thanks for linking up. I’m glad your reading is going well. I didn’t LOVE The Paris Apartment, but I really like the author. I’m curious to see what she releases next. Yay for some live music. I saw the band Nicotine Dolls on Friday and they are amazing.
