The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty

Part of my love for DIYing is because I can save money–the other part is because it’s kinda cool to be able to make your own things out of random things hanging out in your household!

If you’ve been here for a while, you probably know I rarely use makeup unless special occasions/dance performances are involved, but I’m most definitely a skin care enthusiast, and have tried making a couple of my own skin care products in the past!!

So obviously, I was pretty excited about getting this book. :P

The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty is written by a vegan beauty blogger (Vegan Beauty Review) and contains 125 different recipes for vegan, gluten-free, cruelty-free makeup, skin, and hair products.

Part One delves into vegan basics, the reasoning behind DIY beauty products, and the essential ingredients and equipment you’ll need.

Part Two is divided into the following chapters, each of which comes with a table of contents!

Face Care

Learn how to make your own makeup remover, cleansers, toners, face sprays, serums, facial oils, creams/moisturizers, facial scrubs/masks, and even sunscreen!

I’m most looking forward to trying out the Pucker-Up Peppermint Lip Scrub, Customizable Hemp Seed Facial Oil, and the 3-ingredient Skin-Quenching Facial Mask (I already have all the ingredients to make all of these! :O ).

Some of these sound good enough to eat (e.g. the avocado one–I’ll probably never make that one because hello, it’s avocado. <3

Bath and Body Care

If self-care is something you’d like to get into more, what better way than to pamper yourself with DIY skin care? There are recipes for body washes, foot soaks, bath bombs, bubble baths, massage oils, body scrubs, body butter, shimmer lotion, lotion bars, and even perfume in this chapter!

Personally, I’m partial to the Fruity and Floral Massage Oil, Oh My Sore Muscles Oil (boo on delayed onset muscle soreness!), Aloe Vera Body Scrub, Flaxseed Body Scrub, Easy-Peasy Two-Ingredient Body Butter + Heavenly Lotion Bars!

Hair Care

If hair care’s more your thing, this chapter has you covered! There are recipes for shampoo (even dry shampoo!), conditioner, rinses, serums, masks, sea salt spray, growth treatment, and even styling goop!

I’m looking forward to making the Tangle Wrangler, Lavender Luster Serum, and Beach Bunny Sea Salt Spray!

Makeup and Cosmetics

Makeup brush cleaners, liquid foundation, BB cream, powder foundation, bronzer, blush, eyeliner, eyelash growth serum, makeup setting spray, eye shadows, mascaras, lipsticks, lip balm, lip plumper, lip/cheek stains…this chapter’s got it all!

I need to try making the makeup brush cleanser (just 2 ingredients! :O!) and the Almond Oil Lash-Growth Serum!

Unisex Beauty Essentials

I’ve been searching high and low for a good natural deodorant but haven’t found one I’ve really liked all that much yet, so the search continues. This teaches you how to make a spray version or a paste version, so I may attempt that and see what happens! I’m probably going to attempt the hand cream, bug repellent, and cuticle oil at some point too. <3

You can also learn to make dusting powder, shave cream, hand sanitizer, toothpaste, tooth whitener, and mouthwash!

The appendices at the end discuss a number of things, including:

  • Favorite natural, organic ingredients + what they do
  • Favorite all-natural, vegan-friendly beauty brands
  • DIY beauty routines
  • Tips for labeling, packaging, and giving/gifting DIY vegan beauty products

The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty also includes resources on where to shop for ingredients, tools, and supplies, and also provides information to find out more about vegan living + vegan beauty!

Overall, I’m super excited about this book and love that it doesn’t call for a billion obscure ingredients. That being said, most people probably won’t have every ingredient in this book unless they already regularly DIY their own skin care/beauty products.

The recipes seem easy enough–each one comes with a list of ingredients (~2-6), instructions, what it’s best for (e.g. skin type), and includes tips, information about the key ingredient, and some fun facts. I’m definitely going to be making at least a couple of these in the future, so stay tuned! :]

  • Have you ever tried making your own skin care/beauty products? How did it turn out?
  • What should I make first!?

    1. haha, I’ve definitely never tried that–did it end up going on smoothly or did it stay goopy!? :O

  10. I know a lot of people around here who do make their own deodorants, lip balms and other beauty products. I’m not quite there, yet, just based on time (and willingness to exert more effort, if we’re being honest), but I love the idea.

I would make one of the body butters!

    1. Ooo, that’s so cool! I’ve been wanting to learn to make my own deodorant so that definitely sounds promising! I definitely wouldn’t mind trying the one you made out! <3! (Was it hard to make!? :O!!)

  13. Fascinating reading. I’ve recently started to become more aware of everything I’m putting in and on my body so this is right up that alley. There’s just so much to learn as it’s a big leap from being able to buy items from the local drug store.

I’ll have to pick up this book. Thanks for the suggestion and the good article!
