Ultimate Coffee Date: August 2016

Hi everyone! What’s been going in your life? Pull up a chair and come catch up with life with me for the Ultimate Coffee Date!

If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d tell you that…I finished my first rotation (General Surgery) in residency and am halfway through a second one (Practice Management)!

fminternsclass2019

This is my intern class at our clinic scavenger hunt!

The rotation I’m on right now is fairly laidback and also outpatient, but I suspect that after next week, I may never have free time again. (No golden weekends til December, and then none again til late April.)

If my posting becomes pretty sporadic, you’ll know why. I actually spent some time between graduating from med school + starting residency writing up posts for exactly this reason, but was not as productive as I would’ve liked because I was busy living life. (It’s the thought that counts…?)

Stickers for our peds patients! :]

If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d tell you that…I went back to Sushi Saga (aka place where I ate 100 pieces of sashimi/sushi in one sitting), this time with my fellow intern class on tow! We had a good time, and although it was only week 2/day 7 of our orientation, our number of mutually free days had already dwindled down to…zero.

sushisagatake2 If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d tell you that…our graduation pictures finally came out!!!

If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d tell you that…I’m part of a [paid] Polynesian dance group!

What what?!

No one saw that coming–not even me. :O

I kinda mentioned it here, but after my trip to Hawai’i and that super short (30 seconds) dancing stint, I started really, really missing hula/Tahitian again, so I searched in the general region, contacted a teacher on a Thursday…and voluntarily roped myself into performing at a luau in a camping resort that Saturday. I got the videos for the 9 different dances the night before. (Remember how I said I was leaving my comfort zone earlier this year?! Not exactly what I had in mind…)

The audience was awesome–a lot of em’ came up afterward to specifically tell me I was an amazing dancer. I decided that what they didn’t know wouldn’t hurt them and just said lots of thank you’s. It was a lot of fun, and hooray for livin’ life on the edge?!

wavyhairpreluau

The plus side to all this humidity is that my hair actually stays wavy (kindasorta). When I was in California, I’d wash my hair and braid it, hairspray it, sleep in braids, hairspray again in the morning, and unravel said braids about 30 minutes before the performance and by mid-performance, it’d be all over.

Realistically speaking, I’m not sure how many performances I’ll actually be able to participate in this year because the group I dance with is actually closer to south Jersey (I’m in central) and because my schedule sucks, but I’m going to try to if I’m free! :]

fftahitian09

I don’t have any pictures from my current group, but this one’s from back in 2009? :P

The group I’m in also does belly dancing, so I’m going to be learning and performing that as well! :P I gotta make my costume for that at some point, and I thinkkk it’s gonna be turquoise and silver! (Hooray for my favorite colors!)

See past coffee dates here!

    1. Thanks so much, Mary Beth! I hope it’ll be okay! Thankfully, my dance group is super understanding of my crazy schedule, so that’s a definite plus! :P I really hope I’ll get to keep dancing with them! Thanks for the luck! I’m definitely gonna need it! :O

  2. How fun! When I worked at the FQHC, they had a Polynesian dance group at our annual meeting! I don’t think any of our providers were part of the dance group tho…

    1. That’s so cool! :]! This is definitely one of the most random things I’ve done (which seems to be the norm these days in my life, actually), but it’s so nice to have it as a part of my life again! :]

  3. Wow your dance group sounds like a lot of fun and a great stress reliever for you! Congrats on the residency so far. Love the grad pics too. So glad to see you so happy! Thanks for joining us for coffee today

    1. For sure! :D! Residency is a lot of work but I’m surrounded by really awesome people so that makes it a lot better! Thank you for co-hosting!

  4. I love your picture! You look lovely, my friend! xoxo
The dancing gig is so cool! Maybe I’ll have to road trip with you this year some time ;)
Also, I need to go to a sushi place! I’ve never been! You’ll take me, okay?
And we can have ACTUAL coffee dates soon! (Even if we have to have them in the hospital cafe ;) ) Hahaha! They will happen!!! (I will see you soon!!!)

    1. Thank you! And hells yes, I am down for sushi at any time! :D! Just let me know when you’re here and around! Coffee dates would be awesome! I can’t wait to actually forreal meet you! :P

  5. Congratulations with the dancing troupe! That’s so fun! I cannot dance very well…or at least I don’t know any specific style, I can move and groove in a general way (I make the other people around me feel better hahaha)
You look very intelligent and professional in your graduation picture (I would say you look beautiful, but I am learning from Every Feminism not to categorize women based on looks) :-) have a great weekend!

    1. Thanks, Ellie! :]! I can only do specific styles of dance, but aside from those, not so much, haha.

Aww, I appreciate it! <3 Thank you, and I hope you have a super awesome weekend too!

  6. That is so much fun. How exciting on the dancing! And your grad picture is so good! You know the most spontaneous thing really was getting into blogging and everything. A little less than a year ago, I lost my part-time job without notice and I just jumped into the online space. And I guess today I decided to post a FB live video…totally spontaneous and go for it moment! lol!

    1. Aww, thank you so much! :]! Blogging definitely has made me more spontaneous and gets me to do a lot more than I usually would! Props to you on making a FB live video! I’m superrr awkward behind video cameras!

  7. Love the gradation picture. You’re part of a paid dancing group now?! So cool!

    1. Thank you! I’m glad they finally released em’, haha.

And yes! <3! I have a belly dancing performance on September 15! :]

  8. I am probably the worst dancer ever, but it sure is fun sometimes! I “danced” with yellow jackets at a campsite this weekend, but really it was more me being goofy :)

    1. Noooo, I’m sorry about that unfortunate dance. :[ I’m glad you’re okay though!?

  9. Is there anything you DON’T do, girl!??!?!?! Seriously! I am in awe of how you can keep up with everything!

I am definitely NOT a dancer. Though I kind of want to take dance classes… but I don’t know if I have enough skills to be taught, hahaha!

    1. hehehe, there are lots of stuff I’d love to be able to do but don’t have time for at the moment, so I just squeeze stuff in when I can!

Dance classes are so much fun! What kind of classes do you want to take? (I really want to do salsa! :] )

  10. Girl I challenge you to a sashimi eat – off. Seriously. I could hands down eat 400 pieces of sashimi in a sitting. NO JOKE!

    1. YES PLEASE. If I manage to make it down to southern CA in December and you so happen to be free, it’s on!!! :D

  11. Well, I definitely didn’t see the dancing coming! That’s so great though! I won’t lie, I feel sad that you have so little free time at the weekends. I’m lucky to have a standard Monday to Friday job (though it doesn’t stop me working at the weekends either – too much work to fit into a normal working week!). Love the graduation pic – you guys have definitely nailed the grad pics (both of mine look awful).

    1. haha, it’s slightly depressing, but all good! I hear it gets a little better after the first year of residency, so there’s hope! :O

Agreed on tons of work not fitting into a single work week! And thank you! I definitely have some grad pictures from before that don’t look all that awesome. They let me look at this one first to see if I was satisfied with it! :P

  12. That is so cool about the dancing! Making time for your creative/artistic passions will make YOU healthier in the long run too. Not to mention bring you and others joy!

    1. Agreed! It’ll definitely help to bring in some balance to my life! :P

  13. You look great in your graduation photo! Don’t blame you at all for spending less time blogging and more time relishing the little free time you have left! The dancing group sounds fun…I’d be too scared to do it!

    1. Thanks, Janelle! :D

Although it felt super short, it was definitely an awesome time and I was so glad to get to spend time with my friends/family again! :]

I’m generally kinda nervous about performing in front of people too, but if I don’t necessarily have to make eye contact with anyone in the audience, I tend to do okay!

  14. Oh my goodness, the Sushi!!! My son and I love the rainbow rolls!
Good for you to take up dance classes! You seem to have a lot of fun!
Such a pretty graduation picture! Does is feel like ages ago already?
Tamara recently posted…Use Your Words – Back to School BusinessMy Profile

    1. So much goodness in sushi, hehehe. :D I feel like I could have it every day and not be sick of it!

I like to try to keep things varied when at all possible! Having somewhat of a balance is nice! :]

It really does! I can’t imagine how much has happened already and graduation wasn’t even that long ago! x_x
