Ultimate Coffee Date: November 2019

Welcome to theĀ Ultimate Coffee Date! This is the last weekend before I officially start my new job! (I’ve kinda been on break since the end of June. I’d highly recommend this to anyone transitioning between residency or fellowship to a real-life job

Ultimate Coffee Date: November 2019

If we were having coffee/tea today, Iā€™dā€¦tell you that I’m finally done traveling. My workout schedule is looking a tad insane because I’m tryingĀ to pursue all my hobbies now that I’m done with residency and living that #attendinglife.

…I’m totally kidding about attending life. Although I am an attending now, I still plan to continue living like a resident/med student so I can save up money to get my own place. I’ve been wanting to adopt a dog for the last 25 years. :'( I recently finished all my “new hire” paperwork (have I ever signed my name this many times in one sitting? I think not.)

If we were having coffee/tea today, Iā€™dā€¦tell you that my best friend and I are hoping to hike the Enchantments Trail in Washington next fall, so in light of the mess of leg cramps we suffered whilst climbing Half Dome and my semi-near-death-experience, we figured getting into the best shape of our lives might be a good plan.

I’ve joined a nearby halau (at long last!) and BJJ gym! Polynesian dance is 2x/week and BJJ could technically be daily if my schedule could allow for it, but…I also want to lift and continue pole/silks/climbing, so you see where this gets a tad cray. What I wrote back here has been modified to:

  • Lift weights 2-3x/week.
  • BJJ 3-4x/week.
  • Polynesian 2x/week.
  • Pole/aerial silks/lyra 2x/week.
  • Climb or hike 1x every 2 weeks.

(I’m doubling up on a number of these days so there’s gonna be a rest day…somewhere…in there…)

If we were having coffee/tea today, Iā€™dā€¦tell you that…I got a Nintendo Switch! My friend and I decided to get each other Zelda: Breath of the Wild as an early Christmas present in an effort to make ourselves feel better about…well, not buying it for ourselves (heh heh heh…).

One of our mutual friends started up the Awesƶme Orchestra Collective several years ago–musicians from all over the Bay Area drop in for reading sessions once a month! They had a session at the SF Exploratorium for Halloween where they played songs from Night on Bald Mountain, Nightmare Before Christmas + Ghostbusters! :] I’m super hoping that I’ll get to go play (or sing) with them at some point now that I’m finally back in the bay!

  1. Oh my gosh look at all that free time! It didn’t take you long to fill it up! When is the last time you played video games? I’m really happy for you. Enjoy all your fun pursuits!

    1. hahaha, it really didn’t! I got a few new games in August so I was playing on my DS then, but before that….I honestly don’t remember the last time I played!

Thanks so much! I hope I’ll still have time for em’ after I officially start working!

  2. you have had quite the exciting travel schedule the last few months. I bet it feels good to finally be settling down into attending life. Thanks for catching up over coffee!

    1. haha, it does feel good in a way, but I’m so gonna miss all that freedom! It’s about time I become a productive member of society again though.

  3. You have been so busy!! Even in your free time, you’re not sitting idle ;-) Good luck with your new job!

    1. haha, I’m really bad with having idle moments, so I have a tendency to fill it all up! :P Thanks so much! :]

  4. I’ve heard that the Nintendo Switch is really fun! My friend recently got one as well and she has nothing but great things to say about it.

    1. I started Breath of the Wild and I’m definitely gonna have to agree! *-*

  5. Good luck with your new job! It does seem like youā€™re making up for lost (leisure) time this summer. You sure deserve it!

    1. Thanks so much! I’m almost done with orientation week and am finally seeing/re-meeting my future coworkers tomorrow! :]

  6. Wow, that’s a full-on training schedule. Impressive! How do you find the time to fit that all in?

    1. I sleep about 5 hours a day, so it gives me more hours to play with! :]

  7. My plans for fall are to hopefully get my parents resettled and get my life back. No kidding!

    I’m not a gamer.

Dogs are a lot of work . . . mine are so spoiled since I don’t work a 9 to 5 job (or crazy hours like you’re probably going to do!).

    1. Best of luck to you on that!!

haha, they do seem like a lot of work but so worth it! I’m battling with the guilt of the crazy hours and whether or not that’d be fair to the dog. :[ Hoping I’ll figure out something that works!!

  8. You certainly know how to make the most of your newly found time! And good for you, you deserve to enjoy yourself!

  9. Congratulations on the new job.

Wow! You have a lot of different fitness interests. At least you will never get bored. I think the plan you and your friend have for hiking in Washington sounds awesome. I think you should get a dog who can hike and take him with you! :)

    1. Thank you! :]

haha, I really do–it’s hard to keep them all going at once, but I don’t want to give any of them up, so here we are.. I’d love to get a dog who wants to hike with me! <3 Hopefully somewhere in the next couple years!!

  10. are you excited about your new job?!??!! or do you also feel a little bit sad that your break is ending? Maybe it’s just enough time and you really feel ready to start up again! I think it’s great that you took the time off to do some fun things for yourself!

so I must have missed it but what do you play? the orchestra collective sounds great! I played violin in school and we actually did a Night on Bald Mountain and won #1 HS Orchestra that year at State competition. I always like to think I could just pick up my violin again but to be honest I’m super rusty and somehow the cats got a hold of my bow and destroyed it…

    1. I’m excited but also kinda sad that my break is ending (I guess it’s about time though, right? hehehe). I’m really, really glad I decided to take a break though!

I play piano and sing! :] One of my majors in college was music performance, and I wasn’t ever in the orchestra since my instruments of choice aren’t typically there, but all my friends were (which is how I knew about this orchestra–the conductor taught one of my classes! :P ). I played flute and violin for a short time but I was terrrrible at the latter and never practiced the former. ._. That’s awesome that you used to play violin though! It’s been ages since I’ve played piano but I liiiike to think that if I went back to practicing, I could be good again. Nooo on the cats + destroyed bow though! :[!

  11. Glad you’re making up for your lost leisure time! So exciting that you’ll be starting your new job – can’t wait to hear more about it!! Good luck!

    1. Thanks so much! I’m sure I’ll be writing about it! :P

  12. Half Dome was AWESOME! I hope you had a blast climbing!

    1. I’m definitely glad I survived it! :P I really should’ve stayed more well-hydrated though!

  13. I think it’s awesome you were able to get in so much travel! I love it!

My son loves Zelda on his Switch. It’s a great system and I know you’ll enjoy.

I can’t wait to hear about next year’s hike. You always do such adventurous thing!

    1. There are still so many other places I wanna go to! :P

It’s been a lot of fun so far! (Despite me falling down a number of cliffs. I’m terrible at the game, but it’s fun!!)

I’m super excited about it! I hope it gets to happen! *-*

  14. I recently picked up tennis again. I haven’t played since I was a kid so it is great to play again. I do not have a Switch. Sounds like fun though. I loved Zelda as a kid.
