Ultimate Coffee Date: April 2017

Hi everyone! What’s been going in your life? Pull up a chair and come catch up on life with me for the Ultimate Coffee Date!

Ultimate Coffee Date: April 2017

april ultimate coffee date

If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d tell you that…one week from now, I should be back home hanging out with my family and friends!!! :D!!

If you’ve been following my med school journey, you probably are aware that I’m not a fan of inpatient medicine…but it does have its moments! I was working with the best team ever and my senior resident gave me super-super glowing reviews! (As in, “I told [our program director] you’re the best intern I’ve ever worked with in both the first and second year classes. This is my last day service ever and I’m really glad I worked with you or you would’ve ruined everyone else for me.”)

I was majorly flattered. <3 My program director told me super nice things too, so I guess there may be hope for me after all! :P We are our own worst critics…

I get a 2-week break from my 70-80 hour work weeks, for which I’m wildly grateful! *-* (April is my birth month, so last year, I figured I’d schedule vacation somewhere during the month so I wouldn’t have to work on my birthday. ;P )

I also got to cover the Big Ten Women’s Gymnastics Championships! :]!

If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d tell you that…I mentioned this in a previous post and it only took 4 years, but I finally have a meal prep buddy! I’ve been food prepping for the week on weekends ever since med school started, partly to save money and also because it was healthier.

I really wanted to find someone to make food with me because it’s more fun cooking with people and it’d also mean splitting the work/grocery bill + more variety! But I had no takers because everyone was busy studying (sigh).

Last weekend, I drove to Trish’s place after work on Saturday evening and we made 10 quarts of Kale Lentil Soup, 6 jars each of healthified “instant noodles,” 28 sourdough pancakes, 14 sourdough waffles, 40(?) baked egg cups, and 2 whole lemon chickens! We also went to an aerial hammock class, caught up on life, and 4 episodes of Chef’s Table. If you’ve never heard of it, it’s a Netflix documentary series on a bunch of renowned chefs in the world! …It makes me wanna go to culinary school after residency, hahaha.

I’d call that a productive half-weekend! ;P

There was a Ben & Jerry’s sale and we couldn’t resist…I’d call this an improvement from the time Jun and I finished off 1.5 gallons of ice cream in 4 days?

  6. That is so awesome that your med school journey is going so well! Sounds like you’ve had a great resident mentor.
April is also my birthday month! Mine is the 25th, and I’m excited that I’ve got half marathon #29 a couple of days before as sort of my birthday run. :)

    1. Thanks, Shannon! It’s nice to finally have an income again vs sinking deeper and deeper into more student debt!

Our birthdays are only 4 days apart! :] (Mine’s on the 21st!)! Best of luck to you on your 29th(!!! :O!) half marathon! I’ve only ever done one!

  7. I have enjoyed following your med school journey. I am happy to hear you get a break! It is well deserved. My birthday is in May and my plan was to run the Solider Field 10 Miler but have decided to forgo it this year. We are moving next week and I don’t know if I will train very well during the move. ;o)

Oh man, haha. That’d be crazy ambitious! Moving definitely throws a huge wrench into workout plans. I hope you get to do another race later on this year! :]

  8. Holy moly that’s a lot of food you guys meal prepped! Glad you found a meal prepping buddy. :) I’m happy to hear you’ll have a long break soon – you definitely deserve it after those long days.

  9. Yay for having a vacation soon. And happy early birthday! That’s awesome. :) My birthday is May 30 and I’m excited, not that I really have plans, but there are usually some fun events happening around that time so I’m sure I’ll find a few things to do.

That’s awesome you have a meal prepping buddy now. I could use one of those! I don’t make too much for the week- what with the two shakes I use as meals at the moment – BUT I do make a dinner and/or snack most Sundays for the week and it’s handy!

    1. Thanks so much! I hope you find something cool to do then! I don’t usually plan anything for my actual birthday, but just having the option to is pretty nice! ;P

I’m super excited about that! I’ve been meal prepping on my own for the past 6 years and having company while cooking makes it so much more fun (and quicker/more productive)!

    1. hehe, I didn’t share a recipe in this post, but there are plenty on the rest of my blog!

  13. Wow Farrah! I’m happy to hear your senior resident gave you super-super glowing reviews. I’m so proud of you. We are totally our own worst critics, but it looks like you are a great intern, excuse me you are the BEST intern :) Wow you and Trish had a full day, I can’t believe you cooked that much food and made it to an aerial hammock class.

    1. Thanks so much, Mary! I’m definitely good at critiquing myself, haha. My attending a couple weeks ago decided to ask me what I thought I did well and it took me some time to figure out what to answer, haha.

It was definitely a productive day! :P We should not have eaten right before the hammock class though!!

  14. I’d take breaks from work too on my birthday! Good thing you get a short break from all that work- I pretty much max out my work week at 50 hours and after that I’m just not productive at all. Happy birthday month!

  15. My birthday month is August! It’s also my Dad’s birthday month (he’s the 1st, I’m the 12th) and growing up I hated having my birthday in August because it’s winter here then in Australia and I hateeeeeeee winter :P
