Ultimate Coffee Date: August 2020

Welcome to the Ultimate Coffee Date! Yay for making it to month 8 of this year.

Ultimate Coffee Date: August 2020

Ultimate Coffee Date: August 2020 | @fairyburger

If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d…tell you that I recently had a patient who told me she was really happy she made the decision to switch over to me because she hadn’t really felt connected to another doctor since aging out of being able to have a pediatrician. Another patient emailed me, “Thank you very much! Love you!” after I told her I’d already sent her mom her medication refills.

So many warm fuzzies. <3 (I’m glad/blessed to have mostly super-nice patients! :] )

I’ve been trying to do my part in terms of supporting local businesses. These carne asada fries hit the spot!

If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d…tell you that I tried cookie decorating for the first time last week! (I guess it’s not the first time if you count gingerbread cookies in my youth…)

Yelp recently “turned 16” so there were lots of virtual events all over the country to celebrate–this one was a Zoom cookie decorating class from a local bakery (Toadily Baked Desserts in the bay area)! Jessica made it look suuuper easy, but I liked the progression of techniques she taught! It was super manageable and I managed to not end up with “#nailedit/#failedit”-type cookies!

If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d…tell you that I’ve come across the realization that I’ve had this blog for almost 9(!) years! I treated it more like my online diary for the first 4-5 years, interspersed with my kitchen experiments as I learned to cook more things while living alone.

…As such, the older recipes are in desperate need of revamping (well over 100 at this point…) and I’m also going through the long and arduous task of switching over to a different recipe plug-in (that sadly does not support importing my old one).

So I guess I have my work cut out for me for a while. When am I ever not working on a project? :P

For whatever reason, Muffin would rather lie on a plastic bag than the actual carpet. Oh cats.

End-of-Week-ish Recap!

  • Do you remember what you first learned to cook?
  • Have you ever decorated cookies? It was so much fun! (Felt like an art project! I didn’t realize how much I’d missed that.)

  1. Those cookies look great! Good luck with the blog stuff. I can be so tedious to update everything. This month marks 7 years of blogging for me which feels like so long!

    1. Thank you!! It definitely feels tedious, so I feel like I keep putting it off, haha. It’s gonna be a slowww process! Happy blogiversary! :]

  2. I’ll brag a little over coffee too–I have 6 patients who are starting nursing school this fall!!! I guess you never know who’s paying attention, but it sure warms my heart. One of them is going to Marquette, which is my alma mater. I’m so proud and I choked up every time one of them told me.

    Your cookies look amazing!

    1. Ahhh, yay!! That’s so cool–I’d be so proud of them too!! :] I love that they shared that with you!

  3. your cookies look great! I am so glad to read that you are making such nice connections to your patients. Thanks for joining for coffee. Have a great weekend

    1. Thank you so much! I’m glad they turned out ok. :]

I’m really glad too! I hope you have a great weekend as well!

  4. Muffin! And I want carne asada fries. Right now.

I started cooking very young. I grew up in a big Italian family, so we something was always happening in the kitchen.

I also taught myself to decorate cakes and cookies when I moved to my current house. It’s a lot of work, but I do enjoy it on occasion.

    1. I’m craving that again now too, haha.

That’s so awesome! I really wish I’d had more interest in cooking when I was younger so I could’ve learned from my grandma. :[ My parents don’t really cook, so I’ve been trying to learn since college!

That’s awesome! I definitely agree that it’s time-consuming/a lot of work, but in small spells, it seems like fun! :]

  5. Even though I used to be a big baker, I don’t think I’ve ever really decorated cookies — yours look fantastic, btw! I did do a cake decorating class once. I don’t even bake cakes anymore, unless they’re mug cakes.

We get delivery or takeout once a week — although this week we did a short daytrip & actually ate at a restaurant — outside, ordering food & picking it up at a takeout window.

Your patients seem to really like you — kudos! I’m not surprised. :)

    1. Thanks so much! A cake decorating class sounds like fun! I haven’t made a cake in the longgggest time, but mug cakes sound doable, hehehe.

Nice! I’m trying to do a once a week type of deal. I miss sushi buffets though!

I’m really glad! I definitely have a few who aren’t the biggest fans of me but we’re working on things, haha. ._.

  6. The cookies are beautiful! I love making cookies and decorating them with fun colors. Those Carne Asada Fries sound amazing too…YUM!!!

    1. Thank you!! :] It was so much fun! I wanna try decorating more in the future! :] (+ I’m craving those fries again, haha.)

  7. Aww, now I wish you were living near me so I could have you as a doc! Whenever I get a good one their schedule books up or they leave and it’s either back to the drawing board or seeing whichever NP or PA is available.

    1. Aww, thank you (+ I’m sorry! :( I really hope you get a good one that stays–that’s hard about the schedules–I feel like they always get packed once a doctor gets established–mine is only open right now because I’m new there).

  8. Your cookies look amazing! Doing a decorating class over Zoom sounds great – I would probably be less intimidated with a format like that.

My cats are random in just the same way! They’ll lay down everywhere except where they’re supposed to!

    1. Thank you! I was definitely less intimidated via a Zoom class where no one could see my creation unless I wanted them to, hahaha.

      I guess it’s a universal cat trait! :P

  9. Your cookies are adorable! Taking a decorating class sounds so fun. I definitely could use the help!

    1. hehe, thank you! It was a lot of fun! :]

  10. You totally #nailedit with those cookies. They look amazing! Sounds like your patients are lucky to have you. I am seeing a good (responsive) endocrinologist, but the practice of my husband’s nephrologist is horrible.

    1. hehehe, thank you! So glad it wasn’t a #failedit!

I’ve been really lucky with my patients! There are definitely some challenging ones as well but on the whole, everyone’s been great. :] I’m sorry to hear about your husband’s nephrologist’s practice though–that really sucks. :[

  11. Ahhh, yay!! That’s so cool–I’d be so proud of them too!! :] I love that they shared that with you!

  12. Isn’t nice to get such positive feedback from your patients. We are very lucky to have some great young doctors in the ED.
    Those cookies came out great!
I just bought our kitten new toys and she plays with the tie from the bread. 🙄

    1. It was definitely uplifting! :]!

hahaha, that sounds justttt like my cat. We got her super nice/comfy/soft bed but instead, she likes to mash the side of her face on the carpet and just sleep like that (…).

  13. Your cookies turned out so great! I used to bake cookies like it was my job but I can’t be trusted not to eat them so I cut it way back. What nice compliments from your patients! I’ve totally been in the position where I felt my doc just did not “get it” so all the props to you for forging great relationships.

    1. I can’t be trusted not to eat them either, so I’ve been trying not to bake because we have no one to give baked treats away to right now, hahaha.

Thank you! I have a couple where I feel we definitely are not connecting but will keep on trying!

  14. Your cookies are adorable. I am in love with the colors, blue is my favorite. I hear ya on revamping a blog. My old blog was started 10 years ago, and was in such bad shape, that I just stopped posting in it, and started a totally new blog almost a year ago, that matched my new style of vegetarian eating. I have plans to redo the old one, but it’s on the back burner so far. Love your idea of a monthly virtual coffee date too!

Aww Muffin! What a cutie! You did an amazing job with your cookies. You are always staying busy and taking cool classes.
Your patients are so lucky to have you as their doctor. I bet you instantly put them at ease and easily gain their trust (on top of being a smart doc).
I’m impressed you’ve been blogging for 9 years. That’s incredible!
Oh my gosh but I hate all the tech stuff. That recipe plugin thing sounds complicated. Good luck with that project!

    1. hehe, thanks so much! I’m really bad at being idle, so it leads to a wholeeee lot of random hobbies/interests. :P

Aww, thank you! I’m trying hard! I definitely don’t always have all the answers but I’ve gotten kinda good at sleuthing em’ out (or finding specialists who can extra-sleuth!)!

hehe, I started it after I moved across the country for grad school so I could document my adventures! :] I like having it to look back on stuff! Progress has been suuuper slow-going (as in I haven’t done anything for almost a week, haha), but hopefully one o’ these days…
