Alameda Creek Regional Trail

Welcome to Travel Tuesday! Slowly but surely, I’m getting back to the swing of things! I’m back this week forrrr a leisurely hike down the Alameda Creek Regional Trail (…from back in January of this year).

Alameda Creek Regional Trail

This trail is part of the East Bay Regional Park District 2022 Trails Challenge!

Distance: 22.5 miles (out + back)
Difficulty: Easy
Elevation: 200 ft
Trailhead Address: 37.58088,-121.96429
Fee: Free!

The Alameda Creek Regional Trail runs through the cities of Fremont, Union City, and Newark. The beauty of it is that you can start anywhere along this and turn back whenever depending on any time/other constraints you may or may not have had. We started from the Isherwood Staging Area and did 6 miles!

The trail is pretty darn flat so it’s very popular for walking, hiking, biking, and walking your dog! (There are some places where they can go off-leash too!) It’s paved pretty much the entire way through as well — at least 4 feet wide for most of the way through (grade of 3% or less).

We think hunting birds here is allowed(?). I state this only because we kept hearing gunshots while we were walking, which is kinda unnerving, especially given the increased violence lately.

We looked it up online since we were going to report them, but apparently it’s okay if you’re on your boat and entered from the waterway. (The shots were so close that we were wondering if we should turn back. As my friend put it though, “We can either choose to be shot in the face or in the back,. We decided to face em’.)

Thankfully, we lived to tell the tale. I’m probably not selling this trail very well… It’s good to be informed though? Aside from that part, it was a fun way to get some steps in while catching up with friends!

There’s a trail on the south bank that can bring you over to Coyote Hills Regional Park (you can add on an additional 3.5 mile loop there!). The Bayview Trail in Coyote Hills is really pretty!

Afterward, we stopped by Uji Time (it has sadly closed since then :[ ) for taiyaki!

You can find out more about the trail in super-detail here!

  • Do you have any super long trails near you that span through several cities? How far have you gone on them (if you have)?

Glad that the gunshots were for hunting reasons and that you were safe! I’m sure that was a bit scary. My dog, Hank, would love this trail!

    1. It was a little terrifying but I’m glad we all lived to tell the tale, haha. Dogs definitely seemed to love the trail! :D

  1. Nooo that Uji Time closed! I flipping love Taiyaki, and that looks like a perfect treat for the end of the walk!

Erm… so you didn’t do a strong sell on this one with all the gunshots – but it does look like a lovely spot on days when the guns are quiet!? It actually looks like a great place to run with the well-paved, flat trail!

    1. Isn’t it so good!? I was so sad to find out they’re gone (we do have some other ones near us so it’s not the end of the world, but :[ ).

I really didn’t, haha. I felt like it was important to share though so other people don’t end up unsuspecting/horrified like us?! :P I’d wanna go back when it wasn’t hunting season!

  2. I wish my regional trails looked like this! I love finding nice, easy trails to take a stroll on and this one looks great!

    1. Agreed! I recently took up biking with my friend so we’ve been finding different flat trails so we can go for longer!

That’s quite a long trail, but I guess it’s a good thing that it’s flat and quite easy. I’m not sure I like the idea of hearing gun shots while I’m hiking though. I’ve never encountered that here in Canada.

    1. Yeah, I definitely could’ve done without the gunshots too. :[ I like the flatness though — means you can go for however long you want! :]

I lived in the Bay area but never walked this park. I think I would have done a shorter route than the full distance (the 6 miles you did sounds good).

    1. For sure! I recently found a different trail that has a bunch of turn-offs where you can stop off at eateries for snacks/fuel and/or drinks, so we’ll likely be riding down this path more! :]

  3. It looks like a nice flat, easy trail but a good length to make it feel as though you have achieved something!

    1. Agreed! :] If I had a dog, I’d definitely be bringing em’ on this trail lots! :]

Glad you weren’t shot. Looks like a beautiful part of the world! Great photos too.
