California Golden Poppies, Blue Bush/Silver Lupine, and Wild Radish!

Distance: ~3.1 miles (loop) – 4.9mi if you want to add on Meadowlark too
Elevation: 156 ft
Difficulty: Easy
Duration: 1.5-2 hours, depending on how much time you spend hanging out with the flowers!
Address: 8000 Patterson Ranch Road, Fremont, CA 94555
Parking:
$5/vehicle*

*I parked wayyyy down the street and walked an extra 2-3 miles the first time around because the lots were all full, so if you do that, it’s free! The lot outside the gate has pretty terrible potholes so drive carefully.

California Bur Clover(?). At different times of the day/year, you may see flocks of sheep grazing here!

There may be wild turkey sightings on this trail!

100% of this trail is paved (asphalt)! (I even felt comfortable dragging my parents here!) The first time I hiked it was in Converses after a lifting session in my friend’s garage and my feet were still okay after that, if this gives you any indication on the ease of this trail.

There are ruts every here and there but for the most part, it’s flat almost all the way through, with a typical grade of ~2.1%.

It’s a super popular trail especially in the springtime because all the wildflowers are blooming. If you have allergies, I would absolutely suggest that you take your allergy meds prior to starting the hike/walk.

The most striking = probably the California golden poppies. (Another great trail wildflower hike = the Rocky Ridge and Elderberry Loop Trail in San Ramon!)
It’s also a really popular trail for bikers so if you’re hiking in a group, it’d be a good idea to walk in a single file line, especially around the bends/curves. It makes life easier (+ safer) for the cyclists!
Prior to this hike, I hadn’t been to Coyote Hills since 2005 (yep, you read that right) even though it’s super close to home. It probably had to do with me not having a car/license and then peacing out to college, then grad school, then med school, then residency… In any case, I’m back now and happy to rediscover this place!

P.S. Most of the trail isn’t shaded, so make sure you have your hat/SPF/sunglasses (or whatever your preferred form of sun protection would be)!

What a beautiful hike! I love the vibrant color of the poppies as they are so cheery. This seems like a great hike as itā€™s easy and scenic not to mention getting to see turkeys!

  4. Beeeautiful! Which flower is the wild raddish? I don’t think I have ever seen that before!!

The fields of California Bur Clover looks just like rape field/canola back home. They plant it near my village to make vegetable oil…it is sooo pretty in the spring/summer!

    1. I found a photo, so you can see if it looks similar: https://www.awalkandalark.com/north-downs-way-9-lenham-wye/#jp-carousel-2053

    2. I thinkkk the wild raddish = the purple/white 4-petal flowers (you can kindasorta see em’ interspersed in the background of the last photo/pin in the past)!

They do look super similar! That’s cool that it can be used to make vegetable oil! :O
