Ultimate Coffee Date: November 2016

Hi everyone! What’s been going in your life? Pull up a chair and come catch up with life with me for the Ultimate Coffee Date!

If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d tell you that…it is really dangerous for me to go to TJ Maxx. :/ I always find so many things that I love there and have to dial it down so I don’t get too crazy. (I saved so much more money when I was living in the middle o’ nowhere!)

Case in point, I unintentionally found the coolest string lights in the world on the way home from my OB rotation. I’ve been wanting em’ ever since I saw them at Pineapple County (read more about them on my Waikiki food tour!).

Yep, you guessed it!

PINEAPPLE STRING LIGHTS. <3

They go perfectly with the pineapple prize pack that I won from Shooting Stars Mag‘s giveaway! :D

This is so cute! :D

This is so cute! :D

If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d tell you that…I’ve acquired sourdough starter! (Thanks, Trish!) I encountered it back in August, but I couldn’t grab any then since I didn’t have a stable place to live at the time. The original starter came into being ~11-12 years ago in Alaska! :O

Here’s a sneak preview of a recipe coming up on a Foodie Friday next year!

I named it Mossy 2. (I liked Laura’s reasoning behind naming hers! :P ) The original starter is not named Mossy–it’s a nod to the refrigerator my best friend and I inherited from my brother when we started college at Davis. Anything we put into that fridge ended up coming smelling/tasting somewhat alcoholic, and when I questioned my brother about this, he said, “I guess you’ve met Mossy.”

We never found out who/what Mossy was, but we generally avoided keeping stuff in that fridge unless it was in a veryvery airtight container.

He lives in a glass container in my fridge most days out of the week and I feed him whole wheat flour and water every 1-2 weeks!

I’ve already made two things with the “discard,” but you’ll be seeing those recipes early next year! (I’ve been scheduling posts into the future in preparation for the winter hibernation that is my 3.5 straight months of inpatient medicine.)

See past coffee dates here!

  • Do you also fall victim to TJ Maxx (and Ross)?
  • What should I make next with my sourdough?! (I’ve made pancakes and pizza so far!)
  • Do you name inanimate objects? (Technically it’s alive though…)

    Thanks for sharing.

    1. hahaha, they really are!! x_x

    1. Ooo, pretzels! I’m definitely going to have to do that!

I haven’t put mine up yet either! I still need to figure out where I want them to go, hahaha.

  3. I always love catching up on what you’ve been doing! Have you heard of the sour dough project? They are studying the microbes that work the magic >. http://robdunnlab.com/projects/sourdough/

    1. I have not, but thanks so much for sharing! That’s such a cool project! :D I signed up for it!

  4. Is the sourdough starter one of those that you keep for a couple weeks, then divide it out and share with friends? If so, I’ve had several episodes with Amish Friendship Bread…sounds like a similar concept. Eventually, I ran out of friends and had to dump it…but it was great for the while I had it ;-)

    1. Yep! You don’t necessarily have to share if you don’t have anyone to share it with (which is my current case, haha). I just use the “discard” to make pizza dough and pancakes! :] I’ve been trying to figure out which Amish Friendship Bread recipe to try first–there are so many out there!

  5. TJ Maxx is so dangerous..and HomeGoods is even worse for me! I recently moved to a pretty rural location though so I can usually stay away!
What about sourdough bread bowls? It is soup season finally!
    Have a great weekend!

    1. I feel ya! I spent soooo much less when I was living in the middle of nowhere! x_x

I just went to Boston and had chowder in a bread bowl. Those sourdough bread bowls are definitely going to have to happen! (Yay for soup season!) Hope you had a great weekend as well! <3

  6. That is what happens to me when I go to Target and I have to go today so look out! I was wondering what you were going to do with the bread :) Thanks for joining us for coffee great to have you

    1. Ah, Target is definitely a weakness for me as well!

The possibilities are endless! :P I just need to figure out where to start!

  7. The Homegoods side of TJMAXX is amazing and I could spend hours and all my money! I try to avoid going except when I can’t bear it any longer! I have never made a starter, but thought of it- I kill most plants, so not sure I could be trusted to feed the starter either!

    1. haha, I’m so glad I’m not the only one! *-*

I may have black thumbs as well, but apparently the bacteria in sourdough starters are super hardy and difficult to kill, so here’s to hoping there’s a chance! *-* I set an ongoing weekly alarm on my phone to remind myself to feed Mossy2!

  8. Love that pineapple poster! It’s perfect!

    Have a great day!!

  10. So neat! I’ve been wanting to try to make sourdough bread but I know you have to get the starter first. Haha, Mossy 2? So random.

    1. It’s probably some kind of mailing violation for me to send you some but if you don’t have any by the time I manage to hopefully make it out to Austin to visit, I can bring you some! :D!

  11. I haven’t been in TJ Maxx in awhile but Marshall’s is definitely dangerous…I try to stay focused when I go to those stores but it isn’t easy! The string lights are super cute! I love pineapples too :)

    1. haha, I haven’t stepped into Marshall’s yet (there seem to be fewer of those vs. TJ Maxx here), but I’m pretty sure it’d be dangerous for me to go to those too! x_x

I was so happy with that find! <3!

  12. I do have issues with Marshall’s and Home Goods! My husband has a problem with Marshall’s too! We always end up with a whole bunch of stuff that we don’t need!

    1. I haven’t ever seen a Home Goods but I’m sure I’d have a major problem if I stepped into one of those too. So much restraint to exercise! x_x

  13. TJMaxx is to much fun- you know you need all that stuff!! I love love those pineapple lights! I ended up with 10 pineapples this year in my yard- super yummy! Keep smiling!

  15. Love those pineapple lights – so fun! I’ve always wanted to do a sourdough starter, but with my job being unpredictible as to where I’ll be and for how long it’s just not possible right now. Can’t wait to see your recipes soon!

    1. I feel ya. I don’t know how well I can keep mine alive with my current schedule since I’m rarely home but…I hear they’re hardy, so hopefully it’ll survive! *-* I hope you can do one someday!!

  16. Haha, whenever we’re in the US, TJ Maxx is where the dollars FLYYYYYYYYYYYYY out of my wallet :P And Trader Joes… so much good stuff!

Sourdough pancakes sound incredible! I’d just be making a big crusty baguette :P

Yummy! I’m going to need to do that soon!

  17. Well, you know I love all things pineapples so those lights are too cute! I’m so with you on falling prey to TJ Maxx though! That and Home Goods. I just find such cute things, and for great prices!!!
