Top Things To Do in Lewisburg

Somewhere this year, I’d love to be able to visit Linda back in Lewisburg, but I still need to find a way to somehow finagle that (I’d need a long weekend because the drive kinda sucks).

If you’re a fan of visiting quaint small towns and happen to be passing through southeastern West Virginia, you should stop by Lewisburg! ItĀ was voted the Coolest Small Town in America back in 2011 (right before I started med school there!)!

Eateries

This is me we’re talking about here–of course I’d start with the food. :O

Fujiyama

This is my favorite restaurant in Lewisburg, but the lighting is generally dimmer so I never get good shots of the food.

I know, I know. Sushi in a landlocked state?! What am I thinking!? But forreals, their rolls are delicious and the manager is forever coming up with all kinds of delicious and adventurous rolls that are super tasty! Service is excellent too! My favorite server is Daris–whenever I’m back in town, she runs over to hug me while we exclaim how long it’s been since I’ve been back. <3

Stardust Cafe

This is a delicious farm-to-table restaurant that I loved going to if I wanted to treat myself to something awesome! They have a ton of delicious entrees, but their Trust Me Salad is definitely one of my favorites!

Stella’s Tea HouseĀ is unfortunately permanently closed — I’d mentioned it before over in my “Best Restaurants in Town” post a couple years back!

Look at this French toast perfection! :O

When Pigs Fly BBQĀ is unfortunately no more either. I used often haunt/stop by quickly during epic study sessions because it’d be something quick/filling/reasonably priced. They also made their own ice cream. :'(

Fear not, though — I bring you the deliciousness that is The Humble Tomato! They’re open Thursday to Monday + and have all kinds of pizzas, sandwiches, pastas, and soups + salads.

Jim’s Drive In is also a staple! There aren’t very many (any?) drive-ins where I’m at anymore so this is a fun little stop (I discovered it on my way to Friends For Life! More on that below) for a snack/meal. They serve burgers, pizza, hot dogs, all kinds of sides, and their milkshakes are awesome. :]

It looks very unassuming but I promise you it’s worth it!

Shopping

Edith’s Health & Specialty

This was my go-to spot for anything “rare”/eclectic that the recipes I wanted to come up with called for! The downstairs area has tons of bins for buying all kinds of grains/flours/herbs/spices in bulk! :] The ground floor, in addition to having all sorts of different foods, also had a bunch of natural skin care products. I loved their handmade soaps!

Bella The Corner Gourmet

If you like cooking/kitchen knick-knacks, this place is your jam. They have everything in the world and I have to exercise a hell of a lot of self-restraint every time I walk into this store. The ladies who work there are super nice and helpful! We got fresh cheese from them in order to make that Hasselback Steak!

Lewisburg Farmer’s Markets

There are actually two farmer’s markets here within walking distance of one another. Word on the street is that once upon a time, they were a single market, but they divorced each other and now one’s on E Washington Street by the Baptist church and the other is on 219 near the Seventh-Day Adventist church I used to go to. Lots of delicious finds to be had!

Just before winter hits, they tend to put together a Fall Community Harvest dinner and it is all kinds of amazing. I wish I’d been able to go more than just once, but at least I got to go that one time!?

Exploration/Entertainment

Lost World Caverns

I dedicated a whole Travel Tuesday to this–if you’re interested in low-key caving, go check out that post! :]

Greenbrier River Trail

I’ve written about this trail on many an occasion because it was super close by (I used to have to cross it every day to get back to my apartment before I moved into the cat shelter!),

Carnegie Hall

I used to sing here when I was part of the Greenbrier Valley Chorale throughout my first two years of medical school! :D This is also where our medical school used to hold the annual talent show to raise money for the Family Refuge Center! I kinda love getting to tell people that I’ve performed several times at Carnegie Hall… >_>

Animal Rescues

Please Save A Cat

I’ve talked at length about Please Save A Cat because it became such a huge part of my life, so much so that I was actually living there for a while–how many people can say they’ve lived at a cat rescue? :P I will always consider this as one of my homes and I miss Linda and all our animals dearly! <3

Friends For Life, Inc.

This was the other rescue I used to volunteer at! :] I like to think that part of what kept me sane and relatively happy throughout med school was the fact that I was constantly surrounded by adorable and very loving animals (and people). :]

Events/Festivals

  • First Fridays After Five: 1st Friday of every month! There’s live music, art, entertainment, shopping + food from 5-9pm in downtown Lewisburg (along Washington + Jefferson streets)!
  • Chocolate Festival (My personal experiences:Ā 2013 | 2014): Generally around the 2nd Saturday of April,Ā this is a chocoholic’s dream! Includes everything from a mousse-eating contest to chocolate tastings from local eateries to a bake-off! You can trade dollars for tokens and [literally] go to town on the sweets!
  • Share the Love Festival: Happens on the 3rd Saturday of May!Ā This event is relatively new-ish, but it was inspired by Asheville, NC (I adore that town as well) and is in celebration of all things local! Yay for supporting small businesses!
  • Taste of Our Town: Happens on the 2nd Saturday of October!Ā All the downtown streets get lined up by food booths staffed by local eateries/organizations! I usually didn’t get to explore this one as much because I’d be volunteering and either doing blood pressure screenings or helping out at the Please Save A Cat booth (yayyyy for Hot Mama’s White Bean Chicken Chili!) but the spare moments where I got to wander were always tasty and a lot of fun!

Lewisburg isĀ also where I graduated from medical school, so it’s a bit hard to not be a tad bit biased! ;P

  1. Great article! You are truly missed at Please Save Cat, and in Lewisburg!

    1. I miss you so, so much! :[! Once I find out my call schedule, I’ll see what I can do about going over to visit! <3

  2. What a cute town and beautiful landscape in which it is set! Those cafes look fantastic. I’ve never permanently or full on lived in a small town. I love that this small town actually embraces the local business rather than giving over to chain restaurants.

    1. Agreed! :D!! Living there definitely made me appreciate the quiet more and I loved getting to be so close to nature/the outdoors! I’m all for supporting local vs. chains too! Lewisburg definitely does still have some chains but I very rarely frequented em’, heheh.

  3. Sounds like a great place. I love all the local events where I live. :) You lived in a cat rescue? How awesome!!

    1. I did! :P I absolutely loved it there–it’s still one of the homes I miss the most!

  4. Iā€™ve never been to West Virginia but itā€™s on my list of places to visit. I visit Maryland often but I think the drive still might be a doozy. Wow look at the french toast! Iā€™ve never seen anything like it. The lost world caverns looks amazeballs!!! Totally worth the trip

    1. The drive is definitely a long one. :[ I’m hopefully headed to Maryland in September–fingers crossed! :D

Hope you get a chance to check it out sometime!

  5. What a cute little town to explore!

I’ve never lived in a small town. We live in the suburbs which is pretty quite and feels a lot like a small town – but we’re also so close to the city and everything else.

  8. oh how I love travel AND little quaint small towns! THis place looks perfect for a solo adventure (OMG those caverns!!!) Everythng looks delicious and incredibly beautiful! I will put Lewisberg on my to see list ! I am thinking my travel should fall in place with the chocolate festival.

I have lived in smaller towns most of my life, but not too far from major citiies or areas (Currently about 15 minute from Philadelphia)

Nothing like Lewisberg, but still quaint over here!

    1. Definitely go there during the second weekend of April there then! :]

I didn’t realize you were so close to Philly! I’m about an hour from there right now! :P
