DIY 2-Ingredient Apple Cider Vinegar Toner

Fun fact (in case you weren’t already aware)! I’m somewhat of a crunchy granola girlĀ in that I’m a big fan of green living. Whenever possible, I try to Ā reduce my carbon footprint by walking/biking/carpooling/using public transportation,Ā recycling/re-purposing items, and making my own products.

Aside from reusable pads and the DivaCup, I also semi-recently made the switch to using reusable cotton rounds instead of cotton balls/swabs! You can find em’ all over etsy and they come in all sorts of fun patterns!

Technically speaking, it really wouldn’t be hard to make em’ on your own…but since I’m in residency and free time is but a figment of my imagination, I found a good deal atĀ Green Little Nest!

I very rarely use makeup, butĀ these come in handy for when I do, and are also great for using facial cleansers/toners! :]

disclaimer

The first time I ever tried making my own hair/skin treatments was at the age ofĀ 11–I had a slight mishap with measuring out the extra virgin olive oil and let’s just say that my hair was super soft and smooth, but also somewhat slick for a bit. ._.

Thankfully, I’ve improved since then, andĀ it’s apparently been over a year since I’ve shared a DIY with youĀ (?!), so it’s time to change that, because I recently got my hands onĀ Swanson’s apple cider vinegar! :] It’s certified organic and is unfiltered and unpasteurized, meaning that it still has the “mother” (natural complex of proteins, enzymes, fiber + friendly bacteria).

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) can help to balance the natural pH of the skin It’s also way, way more affordable than most commercial products out there, so if you’ve ever been curious about using it for skin care, it doesn’t get much easier than this tutorial!

ACV also has a bunch of other uses–for instance, in salad dressing, as a fruit fly death lure trap*, hair treatments, all purpose cleaners…

*Since the weather has cooled down considerably, fruit flies haven’t been a problem here, but if they’re annoying you, pour some ACV into a container with a squirt or two of dish soap, give it a little stir, and you will have a fruit fly graveyard in no time! The ACV attracts the flies and the soap forms a film that traps the flies and prevents them from escaping their imminent doom.

You'll Need...

  • 1 part apple cider vinegar
  • 2 parts filtered water

Directions

  1. Mix ingredients together and store in a glass or plastic container or spray bottle.

Additional Notes

Add 1-2 drops tea tree oil for an extra boost in remedying acne/blemishes.
You can substitute the filtered water with green tea. (Store it in the refrigerator if you choose this option!)

My skin is more of the normal/dry variety, so I tested this out with 1 part ACV:2 parts filtered water. if you have sensitive skin, increase the water ratio, and if you oily skin, decrease it!

If you’ve never used ACV on your skin before, do a patch test first on a small section of your skin to see how it tolerates it!

  1. I think I need to start using AVC on my skin ;)
I always have a huge bottle of it…but rarely even use it for cooking (unless I need vegan buttermilk!)

    1. Yay! Glad to know I’m not alone! :] I hope you like em’! I feel a lot better about using these than I do with cotton balls/swabs. I just wish I could use em’ to remove nail polish too!

  3. Love these pretty cotton rounds. I go through so many, reusable is something I’m considering. The toner is so easy to make – and I’ve got plenty of ACV. Thanks for the tips.

  5. Love this! I just made my own moisturizer from coconut oil, vitamin E oil and frankinscence and I love it. Can’t wait to try this toner.

    1. Ah, that sounds awesome! Making my own moisturizer was next up on my list! :P

  6. YES to the granola girl lifestyle! Same here. We’re very ecofriendly at our place. We recycle everything and pick up trash/recycling stuff when we can outside if we’re walking. I use apple cider vinegar for a lot of things – including on the spider veins on my legs. It’s supposed to help increase circulation? I’ve been doing it for a while now.

    1. Yay for a fellow granola girl! <3! I want to be able to compost stuff when I someday have a place of my own, but for now, I'm just happy to be living in a place where it's easy to recycle again!

i love that ACV has no many different uses! :D Yay for versatility!

  7. Oh, I love this! I had no idea there were reusable cotton pads for taking off makeup and the like! Those would make some great stocking stuffers for any beauty lovers you know!

I’ve made some my own skin products in library sessions, but I need to do it more at home!

That’s really cool! :D What have you made? Anything you’d recommend? I wanna try making more stuff!

  8. What a clever idea! I don’t use cotton pads (I take my makeup off with a face washer and soap style cleanser) but I used to and I wish I would have known about these! They are SO much cuter too, haha!
