Asheville Adventures (part 2)

Welcome to part 2 of my weekend spent in Asheville! (Check out part 1 over here, and be sure to enter my Balance Bar Fall Medley giveaway while you’re at it!)

This week’s The Fit DishĀ (hosted by Jessica and Jill) isĀ on creating a personal zen space, which I definitely hope to do at some point, but cannot currently because my life is so all over the place right now.

I’m not quite down recapping my Asheville adventures, so I spilled it over into another post, and as luck would have it, today’s half incorporates a whole lot of elements that I’d like to have in my future zen space.

I’d probably actually have two. One would be akin to the beautiful zen garden I saw when I visited the Met back in my grad school days, or at least someplace outdoors with a body of water. The other would be…the dance studio that I’d like to have in my future dream house. In my ideal world, it’d have super high ceilings, a hardwood floor, and poles, aerial silks, and…my latest imaginary addition: aerial lyra!

It wasn’t quite so rainy on Sunday, so we decided to go to Carrier Park for a walk, since it was nearby and I had a class in the early afternoon. It was a chilly fall day, but not bad! It was really pretty! Carrier Park is by the French Broad river, and also has a dog park, basketball courts, and…lawn bowling!

I’d never heard of lawn bowling before, but we talked to a localĀ whoĀ explained it to us (it’s kinda almost like bocce ball, but you kinda roll it more). :] Carrier ParkĀ also has a velodrome that used to be a car track, but now is probably better suited for bikes. :PCheck out part

One ofĀ my pipe dreams is to be a Cirque du Soleil performer, but since IĀ decided to go for medicine, this will likely never happen. Still, one can pretend, so I signed myself up forĀ a circus arts class! More specifically, aerial hoop (lyra)!

Here’s the beginning of the sequence that we learned in class! It’s the second aerial lyra class I’ve ever taken in my life (the first one was back in early 2012), but thankfully, the 6 months of pole I did back in 2011 translated over, andĀ my usual powerlifting made it so I was strong enough to not fail at life! :D!

Part of the end of the sequence! :D

I went to Mamacita’s Taqueria (check out my review here!) to get a burrito after my class before running off to my next interview location!

Chicken Citrus Burrito!

I’ve been feeling super spoiled on my residency interview trail. Hotels with ginormous beds that I can sleep across horizontally without my feet hanging off, being picked up and brought to dinner… The programs I’ve been interviewing at have been rather awesome–everyone has been super nice, and a lot of fun to talk to! :]

anotherdayanotherplace

One of the programs I’m interviewing at is entirely new, so they didn’t have any residents yet, but I bumped into someone from my school on my way to pick up dinner–the only reason I knew he was from my school was because of the shirt he was wearing and the fact that his face looked familiar. (sigh.)

We went out for dinner together because company’s always kinda nice (med school can be rather alienating), and…I couldn’t think of his name the entire time. I’m a terrible human being.

My med school class is pretty big–we started out with 216, and although we’re down to about 176-ish, and I was an HBL-er (home-based learner), which essentially meant that I only went to class when it was mandatory. …so I’d like to think that it wasn’t entirely my fault!

  1. The aerial workout looks like so much fun! I’m sure it’s incredibly hard, too :) My dream house would include a library! :)

    1. It definitely was a ton of fun! I wish I had a place where I could keep taking classes/practicing! *-*

Ah, libraries. <3 I'd love to have one of those too!

  2. I am so glad you are enjoying ashville! It looks beautiful! and that bed! ahhhhh so comfy looking!! You deserve it, you have been so crazy lately!

    1. My personal zen space? Hmmm that is tough. I love yoga, so I would love a “yoga” room , with a pretty little cushion, candles, yoga books, just where i could sit and meditate
    2. Never taken an aeriel/loop class! But would love to! I have tried Pole and really liked it!! I woul dlove to sign up for a program

these things seem to be popular here in the south! I dont remember such publicity about it in NJ (Maybe bc this is smaller area?!)
    3. my dream house? Oh my, i would need some time to plan this! I do know my kitchen would be top notch and comfortable for my cooking, lots of space, wrap around porches (where I can sit outside and have my coffee/meals, etc)

    1. That sounds awesome! I’m still [slowly but surely] trying to add yoga into my life, but have been kinda slacking on it.

Yay for pole!! I miss that so, so much! :'( I think the places I looked into in NJ had a couple studios, but I’d typically just trek to NYC for em’ when I was living there, hehe.

I’d want an awesome kitchen as well, and a wrap-around porch would be awesome! :] I kinda want a bench swing too.

  3. Loved seeing you get to do the aerial class! I’m sure that you don’t get to do that much in some of the other places that you are traveling to. And absolutely gorgeous :D
In my dream house I would have an office for all of my stuff. Basically a giant room sized junk drawer. And a nice kitchen. I don’t need much.

    1. So true. That’s the first place I’ve been to since I peaced out of California that offered such a class. *-* (Possibly misplaced priorities, but residencies in locations with proximity to said classes make me super happy, haha.) It was so fun!

hahaha, I feel like I’d need one of those too! + yay for awesome kitchens!

  4. I did a big chunk of my marathon training at Carrier Park because it is so flat (hard to find in the mountains :-) You can do a 6 plus mile loop there without overlapping!
Mamacitas is one of my FAVORITES!! Yummmmyyyyy!!
And I didn’t know we had those classes! Doesn’t surprise me though :-)
Again– so glad you had a good time.

    1. hehe, they say you can have pretty much any hobby ever, and Asheville will have a venue for it! *-*

Thanks so much for all your awesome recommendations! :D

  5. I want to visit Asheville so much after seeing your gorgeous photos and reading a WSJ article about how it is a wonderful city to explore! In my Zen space I would have a hammock and a garden and I guess it would need to be big since I want somewhere I can take long walks along the water :)

    1. Ah, I hope you get to sometime! :D It’s such an amazing place!

A hammock would be awesome! <3 I'd also love to have a garden, but I'm slightly concerned that I have the opposite of a green thumb. ._.

  6. I absolutely LOVE Asheville!! And I’m loving hearing about your incredible time there. Next time I go back, I have a list of incredible things I want to do and see!!!

  8. Oh my goodness, I am a huge burrito lover and that ginormous one looks delicious! Also, you look stunning in those aerial shots. :)

    1. Thank you so much, Julia! :]!

I figured I’d just leave the burrito wrapped for the picture since I can never get a pretty picture of a partially-eaten burrito (sigh)! :P

  9. Love hearing about all your adventures! You are so fearless, and it’s contagious. : ) That aerial hoop class looks amazing, and what beautiful form. I love your cirque de soleil dream. Right on. Keep it up with finding such a great balance with trying new things, staying healthy, and always dreaming big. #fitfamlove Farrah : )

    1. Aww, thank you! :D! I’m definitely gonna keep trying–it’d be all sorts of awesome if wherever I ended up had a studio where I could keep taking classes! *-*

      Much love! <3

  10. Farrah that class is seriously awesome! The photos make me want to go for a hike. I suddenly have a craving for chips and salsa. #fitfamlove xoxo

    1. It was so much fun! :D I really hope I end up in a place that offers classes at least somewhat nearby!

  11. I would have a sashimi restaurant in my dream home…….. And a gym that was outdoors but covered (just in case it rained)… Of course a beautiful kitchen would be included and…. Mr. Man Friend ;) — He would want a golf simulator room ha ha ha ah aha ha!

    1. A sashimi restaurant would be awesome! *-* (I would probably die of mercury poisoning, but at least my tastebuds and stomach would be happy?)

I wish I could travel more–this all looks wonderful!

    1. I like to stuff it in wherever possible, but it’s definitely hard to be able to sometimes!

  14. Hi there Farrah, I found you at the Fit Switch link-up! I would absolutely have a dance studio in my dream house as well. And I’ve always wanted to try lyra. I’ve taken a couple silks classes, but that’s the extent of it. It’s a ton harder than it looks. A couple of my fingers were in pain for more than two weeks afterward from gripping so hard.

Do you do any other dancing aside from what you mentioned in your post? Ballet? Modern?

Great post. I hope you’re having a terrific week so far, Farrah:-)

    1. Hi!! :D So nice to “meet” you! <3 Silks are super fun (the fabric burns, not so much, but oh well). I would so love to be able to rig up all of this in my future home! *-*

I grew up with a bunch of dudes, so I unfortunately scorned anything deemed to be "girly" when I was little, but I picked up hula + Tahitian dancing when I was in college! <3

Hope you have an awesome weekend!

  15. I’d put a whole lotta Yankee Candles in my zen space :) they’re just so yummy-smelling.
Jess @hellotofit recently posted…4 Ways to Have a Balanced ThanksgivingMy Profile

    1. Yay for candles! I have a friend who makes scented wax tarts, so I may be moving to those when I have a home again, but I do still have a number of candles out there to use up! :P

  16. I didn’t know you could do circus arts class! That is so cool, and you look so graceful doing it! I think I’d look a bit like a clumsy monkey and I wouldn’t know what to do with my limbs at all, haha. But I guess that might be the point of taking a class… :P

    1. This was my second class! (The first one I took was in NYC back in early 2012.) I think the fact that I did pole a couple years ago definitely helped to translate over! :O It was a lot of fun, and my instructor was good about giving pointers on how to make more fluid transitions! I’m a klutz to the max as well, but these classes help! ;P

  17. How awesome is that?!? Circus arts is simply beyond cool, Farrah!
I wanted to do contortionism, but the circus school in Rio was too far from my home and mom wouldn’t let me anyways. LOL
Oh, please keep those vids coming. I’m excited for you.
    You made my day!
    Have a great time.

    1. It’s so much fun! I feel ya on classes being too far away. I feel like I need to live in a place where that’s an option. It makes my soul happy. <3

Thanks so much! I'll post the other half of the video on instagram probably sometime next week! :P

I love Asheville, especially during the fall and winter months. I just love the mountains and trees capped with snow. There is just so much to do there. Looks like you had a great time.

    1. I haven’t visited it in the wintertime yet, but I hope I get to someday! :D It’s such a gorgeous place!

  18. WOW! Such an adventure! I loved the aerials. I tried that once in a local festival in Portland and it’s so hard but fun.
