The Skinny Confidential

So…back in 2015, I won Tricia’s giveaway for Lauryn Evarts’ The Skinny Confidential (affiliate link!), and as you probably know by now, I love reviewing books, particularly when they’re about healthy living or food!

If you’re used to my cookbook reviews, I’ll have to forewarn you that although this book does have a number of delicious recipes with pretty pictures, it is not a full-on cookbook. However, it is a book on healthy living, or as she puts it, “A babe’s sexy, sassy fitness and lifestyle guide.” :]

I should probably start off by saying that I’m not a religious reader of her blog, so I’m not super well-versed to her life philosophies and the like.

The Skinny Confidential

Genre: Healthy Living
Pages: 176

The overall tone of her book is very conversational, as though she’s talking to a friend–very blogspeak, so I will admit that I sometimes did wish for more sentences per paragraph. But! I really like that she tells you to push yourself out of your comfort zone and doesn’t advocate for crazy restrictions and counting calories.

“If you have a freaking craving, then have a small portion and move on with your life.”

(She signed my book! :] )

She has a pretty spiffy graphic on portion control too, complete with a handy way to guesstimate portion sizes!

There are several recipes in this book (e.g. scrambles, salads, soup, sandwiches), including a 2-ingredient pancake one that’s reminiscent of the 3-ingredient pancakes I made somewhere last year!

Pretty sure this is going to be one of the first things I try making. <3

I also really liked that she advocated for strength training! (Hells yes!) I would personally advocate for the use of weights outside of the pink 2-lb. ones because many, many women grossly underestimate their own strength, and seriously, it’s just so darn good for you! That being said, I realize that not everyone wants to be a powerlifter either. :O

Preach!

One thing that she mentioned that I don’t ever advocate were cleanses, but if you’re into that, there is a chapter on it in here, as well as juice recipes. (They sound intriguing and I might make em’ just as an alternative drink, but not to actually go on a “cleanse.”)

There’s also a chapter on makeup! I rarely use makeup and barely know how to apply it, so I would have appreciated pictures/tutorials in this section!

I really liked her chapter on skin care though–it had lots of great tips, and I think following her rules for skin care would easily simplify the stockpile/routine that everyone has. Plus:

Biggest anti-aging tips?

A hat and SPF.

Take care of your skin, people!

And on to hair care! Pictures and tutorials would’ve been super helpful in this section as well, but she has a lot of tips on her blog that you can look into!

Her last chapter was one of my favorites (the first would be the recipe section, because you know how my world revolves around food). It’s short and sweet!

Because at the end of the day, life’s about balance.

P.S. Just as a note, if you’re not into cursing (e.g. “shit”), this book may not be for you!
