Sustainable Companies To Check Out For Earth Day

It’s been aaaaages since I’ve done a round-up post, so I’m here today with a roundup of sustainable companies to check out for Earth Day (but to be real, every day should be Earth Day)!

I received some of these products for free in exchange for editorial consideration and others are things that I’ve purchased over the years + wanted to share. There are a few affiliate links in here, which means I may get a discount or a little $ if you click through to make a purchase (at no cost to you). All thoughts/opinions are mine + mine alone!

Sustainable Companies to Check Out For Earth Day

Lago

If you work in the medical field or are looking for an awesome gift idea for someone who works in the medical field, be sure to check out Lago! These are the only scrubs I’ve ever purchased. (Prior to this, my scrubs collection came from my mom (who is a retired NICU nurse) and various hospitals that I’d rotated through. These are by far the softest and most comfortable scrubs I’ve ever owned.

Each recycled scrub set saves 14 plastic bottles from the landfill — they get their recycled fiber from Repreve (also used by Nike/Patagonia) and their packaging is made from 100% recycled content. Their sizes do run a bit larger (I bought these back when they first started and didn’t have as many sizes offered), so when I repurchase, I’ll be sizing down so it’ll be more fitted!

Coalatree

I first talked about my Coalatree Trailhead pants…quite some time ago, but I love em’ as much as ever! (I have several other articles of their clothing chillin’ on my wishlist.) They’re made of bluesign 88% nylon and 12% spandex from recycled materials. They’re waterproof, breathable, antimicrobial, tear-resistant, and pack down really nicely for travel (or even as a pillow!).

Rothy’s

Shoes made from recycled water bottles that you can throw in the washing machine?! They even use an algae-based foam for the area under the insole! When I first heard of Rothy’s, I was all in.Ā  That is, until my student-debt-ridden self saw the price tag. (I’m still in a mountain of student debt, but I did end up getting a pair due to the very generous discount they offered to medical professionals back in 2020 and I loveeee them! They are super comfy even after a whole day’s worth of wear.

Aside from their signature flats, they now offer a variety of different footwear + also bags — thus far, I only have their flats but I’ll update this if I ever branch out! You can get $20 off using this link!

Sunski

Sunski is a local brand in San Francisco that I just discovered (by way of winning a giveaway)! These super lightweight sunglasses come in a variety of styles. Sunski came up with a way to turn scrap plastic into recycled frames! I have their Dipsea sunglasses (probably named for the Dipsea trail!) They’re covered under a lifetime warranty so if they ever break under normal use, they’ll fix or replace them for you.

Ecologie

Ecologie designs Swedish sponge cloths and beeswax wraps to help you ditch single-use paper/plastic products! The sponge cloths are screen-printed using nontoxic inks and the beeswax wraps are made from cotton coated with beeswax, coconut oil, and tree resin. A portion of their proceeds also goes to Education Without Borders to help provide educational opportunities to disadvantaged and at-risk kids in South Africa + North America.

I got a set of their Swedish Sponge Cloths, which are made out of reusable + compostable cloth (70% sustainably-sourced cellulose + 30% “waste cotton”) that can be used in replacement of sponges/paper towels. They can absorb way more water, are odor-resistant, but also dry quickly, which discourages bacterial growth. 2 Swedish dishcloths equal ~10 kitchen sponges! YouĀ  can stick em’ in the washing machine/dishwasher more than 200 times — typically you can get 9+ months of use out of them (I’ve only had mine for ~2 months but they’re still goin’ strong!).

Word of warning — you may want to alert your household members about their function. My SO accidentally threw one of mine out because he thought it was “fancy cardboard.” :'( (It’s not as soft as what you’d normally think cloth would feel like when it’s been used and then dries.)

Broken Top

Broken Top is an eco-conscious Pacific Northwest company that offers a variety of handmade home goods and body products that are cruelty-free + vegan. In case you’re wondering about the name, it’s not because the products are broken in any way — Broken Top is a stratovolcano located in Bend, Oregon, where their flagship manufacturing facility is located.

The Sea Salt Surf scent has notes of jasmine followed by sweet cream and a slight hint of driftwood. I can’t say that it truly reminds me of being on the coast but it is a lovely scent (assuming that you love jasmine). I’m partial to citrus-y/fruity scents, so Fresh Squeezed is my favorite – it’s a combo of blood orange and bergamot with a hint of cedar!Ā Their candles are made of 100% U.S.-grown soybean wax and cotton core wicks.

Sea Witch Botanicals

Goldberry Solid Perfume

Sea Witch Botanicals is a clean beauty brand offering cruelty-free cosmetics, vegan lipĀ  care/soaps/facial care products, and solid perfumes! They are a certified B Corp + “Towards Zero Waste” company and recycle/compost/sort their packaging/waste.

I have their Goldberry + Fae Ring solid perfumes. Fae Ring uses bergamot, orange, patchouli and ylang ylang essential oils, whereas Goldberry is a floral scent with fruity notes, using bergamot, fir needle, frankincense, lemongrass, orange, and tea tree essential oils. They smell amazing and I love that they come in nifty little reusable tins.

Soap Cauldron / Three Sisters Apothecary

Soap Cauldron sources and packages their ingredients locally to minimize their carbon footprint and use as many organic ingredients as possible + are certified animal friendly by the Leaping Bunny Organization. They offer an array of different bar soaps, body butters, bath salt soaks, balms, and solid shampoo and conditioner bars. (I’ve only tried their Mandarin Blossom Calendula solid conditioner so far but just found out their retail store isn’t tooo far away from me, so I’ll probably be heading over there once I’m done using my current products!)

Bite

It is truly depressing how much waste toothpaste tubes generate. Bite‘s toothpaste bits are made of nano-hydroxyapatite (a nontoxic fluoride alternative). You bite down on the bit, brush with a wet toothbrush, and you’re good to go! (You can learn more about nanohydroxyapatite + its use in dentistry here.) They just launched a flouride option a couple days ago too! I’ve tried their mouthwash bits as well and lemme tell you, both the toothpaste and the mouthwash bits were hot commodities on my last backpacking trip.

They package their products in glass bottles/aluminum tins and they’re mailed using existing postal routes in recyclable boxes/envelopes + refills are sent through compostable pouches to minimize their carbon footprint. I am (sadly) not the biggest fan of their floss though because it seems to break more easily than the floss I usually get from the store. Another company to check out is Huppy! (I haven’t personally tried their products but they seem quite similar! Container is aluminum instead of glass and they have watermelon strawberry as a flavor option.)

Dropps

I first learned about Dropps back in…2015 when I won a giveaway from a fellow blogger. I’ve tried their laundry detergent pods (their “fresh air sensitive skin” pods and their “active wash unscented” pods) and both work very well. I wash with cold water only to save energy and haven’t had a problem with them the pod membrane not “melting.” They also offer dishwasher detergent pods! (I haven’t used these yet but may once we run out of the ones we currently have.

Their products are packaged in a recyclable cardboard box that uses ~50% post-consumer recycled material and have carbon-neutral shipping. You can get $15 off using this link!

  • Which company are you the most interested in checking out? Do you have any product recommendations for me?
  • An honorable mention goes to the DivaCup! I didn’t write about it because I have an IUD and no longer get periods, but reusable menstrual cups (and/or reusable pads) also goes a long way in helping with decreasing the waste produced from feminine hygiene products!
  • Does anyone have recommendations for plastic-container-freeĀ  deodorants?Ā Still on the lookout for one that works well and doesn’t break the bank…

Thanks for sharing! I’ve tried Ecologie, and their cloths are awesome. I like their mission of helping disadvantaged kids with education.

The Broken Top candles sound intriguing too, with interesting scents. Happy to support a local company.
