Hiking the Narrows in Zion National Park

Welcome to Travel Tuesday! Zion National Park was one of the reasons why I decided to go south for my cross-country road trip!Ā  (Most sensible people would’ve chosen to go north to escape the desert. I wanted to hike Angels Landing and the Narrows though!)

You’ll be hiking in the Virgin River for pretty much all of this hike, save for the very beginning at the Riverwalk Trailhead.Ā  If that isn’t your idea of a good time, this hike isn’t the best choice for you. It was knee to waist-level for us for most of this hike. (For reference, we are 5’4″ and 5’2″.)

You don’t need a permit if you’re doing this hike from the bottom up–just don’t go past Big Spring and you’ll be a-okay!

Late spring/early summer is probably the best time to hike this! That’s when the water isn’t as cold and the water level is much lower. There is a chance of flash floods though, so you definitely have to be aware of the weather. It’s significantly cooler hiking in the canyon too, so I’d recommend choosing the warmest day to hike this!

It’s also suuuper slippery — the rocks are like bowling balls that you’re constantly trying to find your footing on. I lost count of how many times I twisted my ankles on this hike. (Thankfully, I didn’t get much more than a mild sprain!)

I would highly, HIGHLY recommend renting the footwear package from Zion Adventures, which includes canyoneering shoes, neoprene socks, and a hiking pole. (You can pick it up the day before you plan to hike! Reservations aren’t needed unless you have a huge group going.)

I’m a biased party, but the above package was worth it for the hiking stick alone. I say this because my best friend almost died on this hike and I managed to save him only because we had that hiking stick.

Our plan had been to hike at least until we got to “Wall Street.” However, neither of us had looked at photos of any landmarks on this hike, so we didn’t actually knew what Wall Street looked like and just kept going and going. We got to points where we pretty much had to swim (partially because we’re short but also because of the water levels) and at one point, we were seated on a large boulder deciding whether or not to keep trekking (trying to be mindful of the return trip). At this point, we’d gone far enough that there was no one else around.

We decided to keep going. My friend jumped off the rock back into the river, but it was way deeper than anticipated and his backpack weighed him down. I tried bracing myself on the rock and pulling him back up, but wasn’t able to. This is about the point where we both realized with horror that there was a very real possibility that he might actually drown. Neither of us were willing to go down without a fight though. I was not about to lose my best friend out there, so I grabbed my hiking stick + plastered myself against the rock and we managed to bring him back to a shallower portion of the river.

Needless to say, we decided to turn back after that. We made a huge pot of “celebration of life” soup using fresh produce from the garden at the hostel. Thank goodness we lived to tell the tale! <3

  1. Wow! That sounds scary but now you have a good story! I have sprained my ankles on several occasions hiking, once on Day 2 of a 5 day canoe trip, which involved a lot of portaging. I never feared for my life but I would have loved some ice packs. Glad you made it safe and the soup sounds wonderful.

    1. Haha, very true!

Ahh! Getting injured on day 2 of a 5-day trip is roughhh. Iā€™m glad you made it out ok too!!

  2. OMG Farrah! I am so glad you are both okay! Thank goodness for that stick!

If you only look at your serene photos, you’d never guess that your friend nearly drowned there. It looks so peaceful and perfect! I do like the look of this, but if I go I’ll be sure to rent the shoes/stick!

    1. Thank you! I am suuuper glad as well. So glad we rented those hiking sticks (and shoes)! It was an absolutely beautiful hike though!!

This is one of my favorite hikes… but it’s definitely not for everyone. Glad you both made it out to tell your story!

    1. Agreed! Definitely a beautiful hike! šŸ˜Š

  4. Wow, what an adventure! I’m glad you guys are okay. After looking at the descriptions of the hikes at Angel’s Landing, Narrows and Observation Point, they are mostly behind what my body can handle. And the Narrows is currently having an outbreak of some algae bacteria. We decided to postpone our Zion trip and go to Joshua Tree instead for now.

    1. Thank you!! I’m super glad too. Joshua Tree definitely sounds like a better idea right now–I hope you have a lot of fun! :] Can’t wait to read about it + follow along on IG! I went last year but only stayed for a short time because I was melting (late August and my car’s AC was not working. :( )

  5. Oh wow! Yeah smart to turn back but the photos look amazing until then. I’ve always wanted to hike this bit, someday!

    1. hehe, thank you! I hope you get to go sometime! :]

  6. The narrows were SO BEAUTIFUL!! I was taking pics with my gopro and so a lot of them turned out too dark with the light changes, your pics turned out GREAT!

    1. Thank you!! I was so, so worried about dropping my camera into the water! So glad that didn’t happen, hahaha. :D

Yooo that’s so scary!! I’m glad you both are okay though!! See, this hike seems fun and exciting (and obviously beautiful!), but I’m such a wimp when it comes to cold water. I don’t think I’d be able to even get in haha

    1. hahaha, I’m a total wimp when it comes to cold water too but this….got better after a bit (after I got used to it, lol). It was generally not-too-cold until the parts where we had to submerge our upper halves, hahaha.

  7. This is on top of the list in our next Zion visit. The first time we could find wetsuits fitting our little ones, the second time water was cold for my son :( hopefully third time will be the charm. Beautiful photos!

    1. Aww, hopefully three times the charm! It’s definitely a beautiful hike! <3

  8. Such an awesome location and you have clicked such great pictures. Thanks for sharing!

  9. Whoa, those pics are amazing Farrah. It kinda urges me to find my boots and get out here, start doing some hiking lol. Super inspirational and it seems like you guys had a lot of fun and created unforgettable moments…

… That to me sounds like a good day out in the nature :)

    Thanks for sharing
