Fitness Goals for 2023

I used to blog so much more regularly, but I’m hoping to pop back into it soon! As such, I’m linking up with Michelle, Renée, Jenn, Darlene, and Zenaida for Fit Five Friday!

I think the last time I made a fitness goal post was…back before COVID-19 was a thing. Now that things have pretty much opened back up and most people have gotten the booster, hopefully I can get my butt back to everything again!

Just for funsies, I’m going to revisit my goals from back in 2020 when I was young and full of high hopes and dreams. (Apologies, but it legit feels like decades ago.)

  • Drink 7-8 cups of water per day. …Let’s just say I’m still working on it and leave it at that.
  • Lift weights 2-3x/week. I gave up my gym membership (because we built a home gym in the garage!).
  • Find a halau. I took a longgg break because of COVID, but I did virtual classes for a while and officially went back regularly later last year + performed in their first winter showcase since the pandemic!
  • Find a BJJ gym. I’d already found one but since we bought a house and I live a lot further away from everything that I was doing, it’s been harder for me to get to. They recently opened a location closer to where I live though, so hope springs eternal!
  • Yoga + stretching 3x/week! Please see water goal. :'(
  • Pole + Aerial Silks 1-2x/week. Things were closed for a while and then work got pretty insane. :[ Still hoping to get back to this!

We had our first winter showcase since the pandemic (1st one ever for me since I joined right before covid!) last December!

Fitness Goals for 2023 (+ Five Struggles)

My goal this year is to be realistic, but consistent!

  • Drink 6 cups of fluid daily.
  • Be active every day. Now that there’s a Tofu, this is definitely a must, haha. I’ve definitely been walking a lot more since he’s entered our lives!
  • Get back to meal prepping (or at least cooking – I miss food blogging!).
  • Lift 2-3x/week (once knee is better).
  • Go to dance practice 1x/week. (I do hope to get good enough to join the company dancers at some point, in which case this will become 2x/week!)
  • Go back to BJJ – 2-3x/week.
  • Pole, Aerial Silks, and/or Lyra 1-2x/week.
  • Yoga/stretching before bedtime at least 3x/week.
  • Go hiking 1-2x/month.
  • Climbing 1x/month would be great too!

…So what are my struggles with those goals (and really just fitness in general)?

  1. First and foremost is always gonna be time. I’m good at counseling my patients that making time for it is important but less great about practicing what I preach, especially lately. Including driving time, I’m basically at work from 7:40am – 6-8pm lately because the place I work at is great at constantly piling on more obligations without actually giving us the time to do it all. I also have about 2600 patients on my panel when I should have 2100, so that’s been fun too.
  2. Injuries. My knee has been intermittently in pain for the last 2.5-3 years and most of the above goals unfortunately tended to aggravate it so I didn’t want to worsen things. I also thought I’d potentially broken my finger for a short time, but finally got it x-rayed and it’s fine (yay!), so I will hopefully be addressing the knee soon and getting back to my hobbies!
  3. Consistency is a big one for me too. I think I have a tendency to like way too many things, so it’s hard to do them all well and all the time.
  4. Over-ambition (or unrealistic goals). This often leads to me not getting as much done (mainly because it probably was not possible to accomplish it all), which sometimes leaves me feeling rather discouraged.
  5. Attitiude/Mindset. It can be hard to get started again after a long break (especially in things I used to be good at)! I’m working on giving myself grace and reminding myself that it’s not possible to take a several-year break and still expect to be just as good as I used to be. (Hopefully in time though!!)

How about just work on getting the knee looked at first?

    1. I have an appointment scheduled with a different doctor so hopefully he won’t cancel on me, haha. It actually hasn’t hurt since Japan though, so that’s a plus! (Will still get it looked though because I don’t entirely trust it to stay that way. >_> )

  1. Good luck with your fitness goals! Happy New Year!

    1. Aww, thank you!! :] Happy New Year to you too!

  2. I so agree that being realistic and consistent is key! I hope you’re able to get your knee checked out soon. You’ve got some great goals – best of luck this year!

    1. Thank you! I finally have an appointment with a different doctor so hopefully that won’t get cancelled too!

  3. I’m thinking you motivate many to follow your lead! Awesome pics of you! Thanks for sharing!

    1. Aww, thank you! <3 I miss you!!

  4. I totally agree with all these possible struggles. Your goals are great but for me I don’t make big fitness goals because my own brain gets too overwhelmed with too many “goals”. I have only one real goal this year and that is just to move every day, min 1km walk. I want to do other things as well, and all of these struggles play a part. But I think if we all support each other, lift each other up, we can all help each other through our struggles.

now I need to really go and catch up on all that you’ve been up to!!

    1. That’s a good one! I definitely have a tendency to make way more goals than I can actually complete, but it kinda keeps me motivated to try to do at least some of em’, so I guess there’s that(?), haha. Best of luck to you on yours! :]

  5. I know exactly what you mean about being given many work obligations but no time. It is very frustrating! You have some great goals! Good luck! I hope you get your knee checked out soon.

  6. I cannot tell you how many words in your post were relatable to me. First off I’m a nurse, I gave monoclonal antibody treatments for a solid year and I truly believe that’s what caused my plantar fasciitis, not my running. I tend to set unrealistic goals as well, but I don’t know I think it’s good to aim high. You know stretch goals? So, I say keep with your big goals.

Also relatable the job piling on more work thing. That I think unfortunately is going to get worse in healthcare before it gets better.

I had to look up BJJ, good for you! I almost think that would be good for me. I have ADHD for sure and poor coordination which is what makes me gravitate to running.

As for your knee problems, having had to have 2 ankle ligament repairs in the last 6 months (anterior talofibular on the right and peroneal on the left since you’re a doctor), I am a lot more cautious with how I take care of my body. I’m also kinder to myself about needing to rest and recover.

Hopefully, your obstacles don’t get in the way of your goals. Wishing you a fantastic year!

    1. My thoughts exactly!! I’m all about the stretch goals/aiming high! If I fail, at least I still got a good chunk of stuff done! :P

I unfortunately think it will be too. :[ I feel like I’m just trying to tread water at this point.

That’s definitely one thing I’m trying to work on (being more cautious + taking care of myself instead of “lettin’ it ride” like I used to)!

Thanks so much! I hope you have a wonderful one as well! :] Looking forward to following your journey at future Fit Five Fridays!
