DIY Honey Aspirin Mask

The optional theme for The Fit Dish (hosted by Jill Conyers @ JillConyers.com, & Jessica Joy @ TheFitSwitch.org) is…Natural Beauty!

Apparently, I’m two for two on psychic ability (first with the salad recipe, and now this!)! I wrote about 5 simple health tips last week that would in turn promote natural beauty, so there you go! <3

But wait! There’s more! I completely forgot that one of the billions of posts/drafts that I have pending happens to be my favorite (and at present, only) “mask” treatment that I try to do every once in a while!

I’m not sure if I’ve ever mentioned this here, but I have a weakness for skincare products, but I’m perpetually poor (let’s go with…)frugal, so I only ever “window-shop” online. Thanks to my go-green, tree-hugger status as a human being, however, I’ve discovered that I can use normal household products to make a lot of things myself.

This is my tried-and-true go-to face mask for whenever I feel like my skin’s getting a little too rough/annoyed with the trials and tribulations of life. The first time I made and used one was back in 2008 (yay college!). It went something like this:

F: I’m gonna do it!
J: Okay. Let me know how it goes!

(20 minutes later)

F: Holy crud! :O!!! This is awesome!

My roommate couldn’t stop touching my face. :O

Aspirin comes from the bark off of a willow tree. The salicylic acid in it has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties that can help to treat acne/inflammation, and also acts as an exfoliant in this mask. At ~98 cents per bottle of uncoated aspirin, it is also dirt cheap, so even my student budget can afford it!

Honey is a natural antioxidant with antimicrobial properties. It can help your skin to retain moisture, and is also fairly inexpensive, so hooray for that! If you happen to have any honey that crystallized over the winter and is still in that form, that works perfectly for this!

…and it really can’t get much easier than 3 ingredients. So have fun! I’m hoping to roll out with a couple more of these DIY skin care recipes throughout the year!

DIY Honey Aspirin Mask

diyhoneyasamask

Ingredients:

  • honey
  • 4-5 uncoated aspirin tablets
  • water

Instructions:

  1. Sprinkle droplets of water onto each tablet (I usually add 3 drops per tablet, and give it a little time to disintegrate), then mash into a paste.
  2. Add just enough honey to incorporate the aspirin-water mixture.
  3. Spread in an even layer onto your face.
  4. Leave on for 10-15 minutes. (I’d recommend keeping a plate underneath your face in case the honey* you use is super runny.
  5. Rinse off with warm water.

*Honey that’s crystallized because it’s effing cold in the winter tends to work really well!

In case you needed semi-step-by-step instructions for #1 and #2…

Smush em' a couple times after adding water and you should be good to go!

Why yes, I'm upcycling a hummus container lid as a plate. Waste not!

(Why yes, I am indeed upcycling a hummus container lid to use as a plate because all my dishes were packed up. Waste not!)

NOTE: If you have an inquisitive/curious pet, I would suggest having them stay away with you while you have this sucker on, unless you want a faceful of fur stuck to you (and a pet to give a bath to). :O

  1. I used to make a similar mask years ago (just without the honey). I haven’t made it in forever because I’ve had difficulties finding uncoated aspirin unfortunately.

I’m going to go look for some so that I can try it again with honey this time!

    1. It’s definitely harder to find these days–I remember when I first started making these, there’d be a bunch to pick from, but when I went earlier this year to get a bottle, there were only 3 tiny bottles in the entire store (hidden in the very back of a shelf)! :[ Sad times.

Hope you manage to unearth some somewhere! :]

  2. awesome DIY mask!! Being a bit frugal these days, I am super excited to test it out! I have been avoiding purchasing new skin care products (i am almost out) so Im goign to give this a try first!

    Thanks for sharing!

    1. I’ve been trying to use up all the skin care products I have before I go out to get more, but…at this rate, if I just make all my own products, I may not even need to! :P

  3. I love using aspirin on breakouts. I buy the powdered kind to make a paste when I feel a pimple coming on. I worked with a woman from Barbados years ago ,and she was like 70 with the most gorgeous skin. I asked her what her secret was and she said, “sea salt and rosewater scrub …you make it yourself, keep it in a jar and use it twice a day” I don’t use it daily, but I definitely still use it from time to time and it makes your skin so soft and bright. I really should get back into it now that I’m turning 35! Eeeek!

    1. Whatwhat, I never even knew you could buy it in powdered form! (Then I can skip the smushing part, hahaha.) I’m definitely going to have to check out how to make that sea salt + rose water scrub! It sounds amazing! <3

  4. So interesting! I have never heard of this! I may have to try it out!

    1. Julie, I have not seen a single wrinkle on you ever! You are gorgeous! I’m not sure if this mask does much for wrinkles, but maybe the antioxidant part of the honey? :D It’ll leave your skin supersuper soft though!

  7. I’ve made relaxing bath salts and oils. Does that count? I’m intrigued about adding the aspirin for a face mask. Thanks for sharing the knowledge with the #fitfam!

  9. I deal with acne every now and then (I’m lucky it is much better than it used to be), so I am totally intrigued by this. I need to try it!

    1. I hope this works for you! My skin is definitely on the drier end of the spectrum (with a little more oiliness in the T-zone area)–this is a reallyyy great exfoliator! :]

  12. aspirin masks are so awesome! And honey is one of my favorite skin loving ingredients :)
Pragati // Simple Medicine recently posted…Clean-Up Your Skin Care RoutineMy Profile

    1. Agreed! :D This is probably my favorite out of all the DIY skin care products I’ve made, buttt…the night is young! There are so many more! :P

  13. Wow! Awesome…I’ve always heard that crushing an aspirin tablet and applying it to the face helps with acne, but I didn’t know if it was true or not.

I have never made my own beauty product. I think the only thing I’ve done is put coconut oil in my hair!
Kayla recently posted…Grokker At-Home WorkoutsMy Profile

    1. Everyone’s skin is different, so I’m sure it doesn’t work for everyone, but it’s a frugal alternative to buying in-store skin care products with a bunch of other chemicals in it!

I still need to try that! I’ve heard so many great things about coconut oil for hair/skin! :]

  14. I keep it pretty simple with witch hazel, rose water and almond oil for my face. I’ve never tried an aspirin mask!
Earl-Leigh recently posted…Diva’s Guide to Getting Fit and Healthy| ReviewMy Profile

    1. Ooo, that sounds awesome! I don’t think I’ve ever tried anything with rose water or almond oil in it, but I’ve heard it’s awesome for the skin! :]

  15. Ha! I don’t buy aspirin because I never use such things – I deal with headache pain if I get one, lol – but maybe now I should for face mask purposes!
GiGi Eats recently posted…GUEST POST: How I Became Empowered By My “History”My Profile

    1. Agreed! I’m the same way, and pretty much only have aspirin because I want to make these masks. :P Good thing they’re nice and cheap!
