Ultimate Coffee Date: March 2015

Hi everyone! I’m linking up with Coco @ Got 2 Run 4 Me, Lynda @ Fitness Mom Wine Country, & Deborah @ Confessions of a Mother Runner! Pull up a chair/bean bag/whatever you like to sit on and come link and/or catch up with us! :]

If we were having coffee/tea this morning…I’d ask you how you’ve all been doing! What’s been going on in your lives? (Let me know in the comments!)

I just finished up my psych rotation, and am packing my bags to run off to West Virginia for a month to live with my friend while I do my first away rotation in Family Medicine! It’s almost all inpatient, so it’ll really be more like Internal Medicine, but I’ve done almost zero inpatient work so far (unless you count psych), so it’ll be good for me!

I’ve read amazing reviews from past students who’ve done rotations there, and also met my preceptor at Hospital Day, as well as the resident that I’m probably going to be working with, so I’m super excited! :] I may or may not have brought along 1/4 of my pantry because she’ll be on her surgery rotation, and since she’s housing me, I should really feed her. <3 My other friend is staying in student housing (where I would’ve been if said friend hadn’t “kidnapped” me :P ), so I anticipate many food adventures to follow! (Hopefully.) <3

Here’s a text that my friend (the one I’ll be living with) sent to one of our mutual friends:
dontbejelly

If we were having coffee/tea this morning…I’d ask you if you have a GoodReads account! March is National Reading Month, and I discovered GoodReads earlier this year. It’s been a great way to keep track of the books I’ve read and the books I want to read!

If we were having coffee/tea this morning…I would tell you that on the evening of the last coffee date we had, I went to seminar held by Grandmaster Relson Gracie!

reslongracieseminar
This is the second seminar I’ve gotten to take with him (first one here! :D), and I earned my second stripe! <3!!!

It looked like I was getting my second first stripe because I made the mistake of throwing my belt into the washing machine late last year and my stripe washed away (nooo!). It’s been reinstated along with the new one though! :D

Coolest news of all (aka all the brag rights ever!?!?)? Relson gave me an amazing job offer.

For serious. The first night, I was talking with him (we all went out for sushi afterward) and I totally thought he was kidding, but when we had a cookout the next day, he continued on his quest to try to convince me to quit med school to travel the world with him and teach BJJ.

What more could a 2-stripe white belt possibly ask for in life!?!
GJJ Seminar with Relson Gracie

Quick intermission for an autographed photo, my belt, and cookout noms!

Said job offer included a salary of $100k/year, 25% commission on any BJJ videos we sold, and free room and board + free jiu jitsu lessons at his house in Hawai’i. (Do you guys/ladies know how much I love Hawai’i + free learning opportunities?)

Oh em eff gee, you better believe my $200k-in-debt (not including interest) self wanted nothing more than to pounce on that opportunity. How often does that sort of thing ever happen?! ;_; How awesome would that be!?!? I could write a book about my experiences! :O

…But back in the my real world, as badass as it might be, I cannot in fact defect on med school to travel the world with Relson Gracie. (He said that I was like a rock, and that trying to convince me to drop med school was like telling a mountain to move. Believe me, I would so do it if I could split myself into two entities! ;_; Alternate-universe-me, go forth!)

Honestly, a part of me died on the inside having to say no to that. If residencies ask me why they should pick me, I should totally bring this up. (“I turned down a job offer from Grandmaster Relson Gracie himself for this!”)

Meanwhile, Phil (my instructor) is kinda getting a kick outta this, but is also in the “let-her-finish-med-school-first (and don’t steal my student!)” camp.

I’d hella “settle” (it’s really not even settling) for just going to his training camp, which is apparently just $250 for an entire week!!! But…it’s in Brazil, and I’d have to take a vacation in order to cart my butt over there, so let’s be real here, what are vacations when you’re in medical school? Oh right, there’s no such thing. :[

  1. Wow! You have a lot of excitement going on. You must be very dedicated, that is great. I added you as a friend on Good Reads. I don’t use it as often as I should, but it is a pretty cool network.

    1. I use it in my little pockets of spare time, but it’s been awesome in terms of finding new books that I think I want to read! :O

  2. Lots of excitement going on for you! and the opportunities! Nice! Don’t you love options? Good luck with your next rotation! I think family practice is an area where there is a HUGE demand! I love your thought process- just stay true to yourself and have fun! Yes I have a goodreads account but I don’t think I am good about keeping it up. Have a safe move! and a great badass weekend!

    1. Thank you! :D I’ve been hearing that they’re trying to make a push so that nurse practitioners and PA’s can basically completely take over the role of a family med physician! :[ Kinda makes me sad because that’s essentially going to murder my future profession, but so long as I can find a job somewhere, it’d be nice! *-*

Thank you, and I hope you have a great rest of the weekend!

  3. Where will you be in West Virginia? I went to college just over the boarder (in PA) from WVU. Last year I had to give up taking free classes for my teaching certificate because of my work schedule. I loved my job too much to leave it them. It was a hard decision to make, but honestly it’s worked out for the best now. Im now in the process of leaving my nanny job because the mom is going to stay home with the little guy and new baby girl, so I have chance to finish school. It won’t be free this time though haha.

    1. Bridgeport! :] My school + the shelter I volunteer at is in Lewisburg, so I spend some time shuttling back and forth in between rotations.

I wish school could be free at some point for me! :'( $50k/year is wildly depressing.

  4. What an honor and a thrill, but as a parent I’m sort of glad you went with med school – hopefully it will pay off in the long run. ;-) So cool that you can stay with a friend in WVa!

I’m really excited! :] She actually stopped in town yesterday, so I’m just going to follow her back in an hour-ish to lessen my chances of getting lost!

  5. loved reading about all that’s going on in your life. i am stopping by from the ultimate coffee date. and yes, i do have a goodreads account. probably time to start using it!

  7. I don’t know if I could pass up Hawaii! LOL That’s quite flattering and your martial arts classes sound really cool. I think you are going to have a blast with your new rotation. Can’t wait to hear all about it. Thanks for joining us for coffee today!

    1. They’re definitely a lot of fun! I haven’t been able to go back all month because my hours for my psych rotation were so long! :x Hopefully when I’m back from this current rotation, I’ll get to start going again!

      Thanks for hosting! :]

  8. What an amazing opportunity – but I’m very impressed you chose to stay in med school. Good luck on your next rotation!

I’ll play devil’s advocate and say you definitely missed a once in a lifetime chance (so your alternative universe self is well on her way to be the very best, like no one ever was). It kinda comes down to passion. What is your passion and what would it be five years from now? Traveling the world and getting paid to do your passion is the dream, and I would have gone with it if I were in your shoes. But then again, what if you grow tired of it within a year? Maybe three years? Then you’d be kicking yourself in the ass for dropping med school and be that much further from your career. But I suppose we’d all like to make profit from our hobbies. I for one would like to get paid paying video games and working out, but I would either have a sugar mama or I’d be a stay at home dad, haha.

I’m inclined to say you did the right thing, and it’ll be fun to think about “what-if.”

    1. I’d love to get paid to work out and look awesome whilst training in pole/hula/Tahitian/salsa/play piano, etc., but that is highly unrealistic, haha. I guess that’s why I’ve always separated out my life so that my hobbies stayed my hobbies. I don’t think I’d actually want them to become my career, despite how awesome it might seem. In the long run, I do want to do medicine, and 5 years down the road, that’s where I hope to be. I’ve just been really upset with the government lately because the people making decisions on health care know absolutely nothing about it, and the field I want to go into might get replaced. :[

  10. I love the text…that’s hilarious! Good luck with your first away rotation! Sounds scary but fun at the same time. I hope to see many photos of your food adventures!

    1. Thank you! :D I hope I can do a good photo documentary on it! :P I don’t tend to take very many pictures of anything other than food in the hospital/clinic (I’m worried about HIPAA violations and all that goodness), but I’ll see what I can do! :]

  11. If we were having coffee together, I’d ask you to teach me some Ji-Ju! I’m so infatuated with martial arts and anything Gi-related, but I’ve never taken a class. Maybe I should fix that. :) Sophia (Harry’s seven year-old) is working on her Black belt; she tests in September. I sometimes think that i’d be so cool to do something similar to what she does. Then I realize I’m too lazy. :P

I’M SO EXCITED for your next rotation! It sounds like it’s going to be quite the adventure!

    1. They’re a lot of fun!! :D I’m still a beginner, but I could teach you the superrrrr super basic stuff! :P I never really got to take anything martial-arts-related when I was a kid because my mom thought it’d make me turn out all manly (sigh).

That’s awesome that she’s working on her black belt! Best of luck to her! :D

Me too! I hope I’ll be able to share good stories and the like! :]!

  12. Oh wow! Congrats on the job offer. I can just imagine how tough that’d be to turn down. But kudos to you for staying the course with med school. All the best with your new rotation! I do have a Good Reads account but haven’t updated it in forever. I’m sure I don’t even know the password. : /

    1. I figured I was this far in, it’d be really terrible to give up/throw away all the work I’ve put into it! :O

I’m like that with some of my accounts of stuff because I have so many different passwords! :x

  13. Have fun is WV! That should be exciting ;)
Dude, if we were roomies, we would have so much fun cooking ALL THE THINGS together ;)
And omg! Goodreads is my fave! I’m adding you right now! You will be obsessed! It is the BEST site!

Ahh, that would be so fun! Every day would be a beautiful feast! <3

  14. Love the text and the ju-jitsu story! I have met some running legends including Meb, but none of them offered be a 6 figure job. Just saying. Your friend is SUPER lucky. I could use your cooking talents in my house. Friended you on Good Reads.

    1. My heart is broken. :'( I really wanted the ability to split in two so I could do both, hahaha. I could write a book on the experience and potentially pay off my student loans! *-*

Aww, thank you! :D I’m super excited! We’re leaving for her place in an hour!

  15. Dang, girl, that is truly an amazing offer you had for a job! He must be very proud of you and think highly of you. What a compliment! And that text message conversation is hilarious.

    1. For serious! :[ I am so sad that I had to turn it down! ;_; But I was definitely super flattered!

      They know me well! <3

  16. So I’m finally catching up on my comments…and holy wow that sounds like an awesome job offer! But I understand why you can’t take it. I wouldnt be able to give up all the work you’ve done in med school either, even for an amazing opportunity like that. I haven’t ever turned down something quite as entertaining or awesome as that, but I have had to make difficult decisions before because it was more important for me to do other things besides what I wanted. As much as it sucked at the time, in the end I realized I made the right decision.

I’m jealous of your friend you’re staying with. Come to Florida for a rotation! You can stay with me and I’ll trade you other chores for cooking.
Montana @ Pretty Lil Mudder recently posted…Guest Post: 5 Tips for Successful Marathon TrainingMy Profile

    1. Oh, Montana, that would be so awesome!! <3 I have actually been looking into Florida, but my scheduling is a mess right now. :[ (Long story short, I sent a bunch of papers in about a month ago requesting certain dates, but they haven't been sent out yet, and I feel like I can't send out more until I know whether or not I got the ones I originally requested because it might turn into this giant cluster of overlapping dates. Basically, life is a mess and I'm really frustrated, but hopefully it all works out. ._.) I'll definitely let you know though if I do manage to snag a rotation in Florida! :]

I'm with you on the decision-making! As amazing as it would've been to do that, I just can't justify giving up all the work I've already done for med school (even if I were to just put it on hold), so I guess I'll just keep on truckin'! :] Hope you have a great weekend! <3

  17. Wow that would be hard to pass up. But you know deep down inside that finishing med school was important to you. Everything happens for a reason, right? Thanks for the fun coffee chat!

    1. True that! I definitely felt that I would regret it if I gave up on med school, but it would’ve been so cool to be able to do both! :O
