Ultimate Coffee Date: July 2018

Welcome to another Ultimate Coffee Date! How is half the year already over!?

Ultimate Coffee Date: July 2018

If we were having tea today, I’d…tell you that I’m officially a PGY3 (3rd year)…in other words, it’s my last year of residency! (What what?!) Time has seriously been flying by quickly–there’s still so much I want/need to do! I’m currently knee-deep in my applications for fellowships and attempting to finish my personal statement for hopefully the last time (sigh).

If we were having tea today, I’d…tell you that I already miss our graduated 3rd years. Tradition has it that we hold an annual “informal graduation” at our office–I collected random (funny and/or ridiculous) quotes from people throughout the year and put together a slideshow “Quote Jeopardy” + also managed to coerce our former-former 3rd-years to put together some words of wisdom (or residency roasts) in the form of videos. :] There were lots of laughs and it was a fun trip down memory lane. :P

Despite having to work nights, I even got to make it to graduation for 2 hours before heading back to the hospital to work! My advisor texted me the night before to ask if I was going and I found out why when I got there–I apparently won an award! :O

R’member when I won that one scholarship in medical school for being a nice person? This is vaguely similar in the sense that it’s given to a resident for their service to others, being a good role model, and “providing patients and their families with compassionate, comprehensive and caring medical service on a continuing basis.” I was super, super flattered. <3!

If we were having tea today, I’d…tell you that I finally found out who prank called me last year!! In my residency, I’m generally known as one of two things–cat lady vs. resident who gets the weirdest answering service calls. Late last year, I was working on nights and my pager went off twice in succession. When I called back, I got…Pizza Hut…and Taco Bell. (Our pager is supposed to be used by employees of the hospital to reach us if they need to (e.g. the Emergency Department to tell us about a potential admission or a nurse to alert us about something a patient needs). Apparently one of my graduated friends (former-former 3rd year) sometimes pranks us when he’s bored. >_>

I finished off my second year of residency by visiting one of my closest friends over in Brooklyn! Our hangouts usually consist of fooding, some form of physical activity (walking, working out, kayaking, canoeing, etc.) and napping, and this past weekend was no different! They say that once you hit the 10-year mark with a friend, you’re pretty much stuck with each other for life. Only 3 more years to go! :P

Trish asked me to form a third entity in the backseat and I didn’t want to disappoint. We named her Emma. (We did not end up needing to use her for carpool purposes.)

  • How do you feel about carpool lanes? Do you ever qualify for them? :'(
  • What’s your drink of choice? I still don’t actually drink coffee so I’m all about different varieties of iced tea lately!

    1. Thanks so much! I can’t believe it’s already here!

  2. Congrats on your award. I feel like I’ve kind of gotten to “know you” through your blog and i’m not surprised you won this at all! I know you’re applying for fellowships, but have you been tapped for chief?

We don’t have carpool lanes in Chicago. The way people drive, I”m pretty sure people who just ignore the rules and use them!

    1. Aww, thank you! :]! I was super flattered. I did apply for chief but didn’t end up getting elected. It works out well though because it gives me more time to do the things I actually want to do (e.g. volunteer at the free clinic and more sports medicine experience/game coverage :D!)!

      hahaha, that makes sense! :P

  3. Congrats on your reward! I’m not surprised you were selected. Is “fooding” a word? LOL Most carpool lanes here are turning into toll lanes, so you pay if you don’t have enough riders. They are pretty heavily enforced with hefty fines ($500) so we don’t risk it!

    1. haha, it probably isn’t, but I’m just gonna make it one because it might as well be a verb for me! :P

Oh man, $500 is super steep! I definitely wouldn’t risk it either then!

  4. Cold brew for me these hot days! Congrats on making it through 3rd yr!!

Thank you! I can’t believe I’m already in the last year–the time really flew by!

    1. Aww, thanks!! I just finished 2nd year and am starting my third and final year :D!!

The coffee date linkup is on the first Saturday of each month—I t’d be awesome to have you join! It’s one of my favorite linkups! :]

  6. Awww, two different awards for being a genuinely good human! Congratulations!!
I don’t know if I should be really impressed by you or a little worried about the rest of the future of medicine ;-)

Here in Tampa the commuter lane is different. it’s a separate pass you buy to use it. The sensors can tell and the fines are steep. So no thanks! If it was like yours though…. hmmm

    1. Thanks, Kristen! :]!! Don’t worry, most everyone (at least in Family Medicine) kindasorta has to be nice. They just gave me an award for it because I’m apparently extra nice (hahaha).

Oh man, that definitely wouldn’t work then. We didn’t end up using Emma but she would be pretty convincing from afar, right?! :P

  7. That award is so well-deserved! Congrats!!! That was a great idea to do the Jeopardy game with your fellow residents’ quotes ;-) Very clever!!

    1. Aww, thank you! :]!

hehe, it was a fun time! :D

  8. Congrats Farrah! That is amazing and wonderful that you did it and did so well that you earned such a great honor with the award too! I love that your fellow residents (?) make it so fun with the get togethers and pranks and such- memories and friends for life!

    1. Aww, thank you! <3!

haha, yeah! We all spend so many waking hours with each other that those become somewhat of a necessity to keep on going. :P

  9. I remember when I was on the freeway and got into what I thought was a carpool lane because I thought I could – well, it was actually a TOLL lane and I got a super expensive ticket, LOL! That being said, I didn’t even have anyone else in my car so even if it was a carpool lane, yeah, um, I didn’t qualify! LOL! I know the rule now though LOL

  10. Congrats on finishing your 3rd year! time is really flying by isn’t it?

I’m not a hot coffee person but i love the frozen kind and Dunkin Donut has some amazing flavors right now, like Cookie Dough!

    1. It really is!!

I’m not much of a coffee person either but I’ve heard of those Dunkin Donut flavors and I’m rather intrigued!

  11. Congrats on your award! And good luck with finding a fellowship. I’m tired just thinking about all the work you do.

We don’t have HOV lanes here, but we’ve been in cities that do have them and they can really help — except you have to know where to get on & get off & that can be a real problem sometimes!

    1. Thanks so much, Judy!! :]

Agreed! I hate when they randomly stop allowing people to change lanes without any warning!

  12. Hooray for being in your final year! That’s so awesome!

Bahahaha and I love Emma! So realistic! You totally have a backup career in fake person creation 😂

  13. Congrats on making it to your final year! Love the quote jeapordy idea!

    1. Thanks so much, Vicki! :]!

  14. Congrats on the award!

I doubt there is a single carpool lane in all of Montana….

    1. Thanks so much, Hannah!

haha, that does make sense–I don’t think West Virginia had any either…

  15. OMG THE HOV THING looooool
And so many congrats on the last year of residency and your award. That is so awesome and undoubtedly well deserved.
How are you almost done with residency??? Geez, time is flying.

    1. Glad you found it amusing! :P
