Ultimate Coffee Date: March 2018

If we were having tea today, I’d…I recently found the bargain bin at one of the Asian markets I usually frequent and life has been lovely. It’s been harder to adhere to my $50/month grocery bill here (cost of living was so, so much cheaper in WV/KY), but this discovery will make things a little easier!

7 bananas, 10 apples, 2 plums, 7 kiwis, 3 Korean pears, and 2 avocados for...$5.85!!!

If we were having tea today, I’d tell you that…it was my best friend’s birthday a couple weeks ago and we were lamenting growing older.

At least security didn’t think I looked shady enough to send someone to follow me. :/ I guess we’ll all be happier about this in a couple decades?

If we were having tea today, I’d tell you that…winter tends to be a harder time for me, possibly because of the decreased sunlight, gloomier weather, and more sicknesses all around. I don’t think I mentioned it here, but about a 1.5 months ago, one of my very first patients that I took care of as a third-year medical student passed away. (She’s the one who wrote me this card.) I also just found out that my former med school’s librarian passed away. :[ She treated us like her grandchildren and always kept us fed with baked goods, fruit and snacks. She also used to play pranks on us to keep us on our toes! (She’s pictured in the background of the photo here using the library skeleton to pat me on the head while I was studying, hahaha.)

I’ve been trying to stay positive though–thankfully, I’ve also had a number of patients I’ve been seeing who’ve been doing a lot better. One of them apologized for not coming back sooner to see me, and gave me a big hug/told me I was the best. <3

If we were having tea today, I’d tell you that…on a lighter note, my friends and I started a food group, which really just means that we’ve made a list of the places we want to eat at and going to them. Food Adventure #1 was yesterday evening!

  1. Wow, that is a tight grocery budget — Asian stores can have great deals though. I try to buy all my spices there at least. I’ve been carded at a work dinner, when I was hosting my client. :-O

    1. Finding great deals is my jam! :]

haha, nice! :P Good to know I’m not the only one!

  2. That is a tough grocery amount to stick to. I feel like I pop in for one thing and it’s $25 minimum. Great deal on all of that fruit though! Have not been carded in a while ha ha. Thanks for catching up over coffee

    1. That’s how I am with walking into Target. I’ve been splurging a little more lately but still hanging on to this crazy idea that I’m gonna be able to finish all the stuff in my apartment before I buy anything more! *-*

  3. I think one of the toughest and most rewarding parts of being a medical provider is losing a patient you’ve cared for. I used to do pediatric oncology until it got too tough for me. Once I became a parent, it was emotionally difficult for me. Fortunately, there are so many positives that it really makes it worthwhile. One thing I love is that after 10 years as a PNP, I’ve gotten to watch my patients grow up!

    1. That is super rough. :[ My mom used to be in pediatric oncology as well and she wanted to quit nursing if she couldn’t find something outside of that because it was so rough. She switched over to NICU and loved/stayed there for decades though! It’s so important to find a specialty you adore!

  5. Yay for bargain bins! I love a good discount… I’m sorry to hear about your first patient and your beloved librarian. Winter tends to be hard for many people and I hope you’re able to find some peace as the weather warms up :)

    1. Agreed! *-*

Thank you! I hope it warms up soon. <3 I've been done with this winter since it started, hehehe…

  6. My hubby is pretty good at finding stuff in the bargain bins at grocery stores…..I can usually score some discounted Hawaiian rolls LOL (those are my favorite!)

  7. All of that fruit for $5.85! That’s amazing. What a great find and good for you for sticking to your budget.

The note from your previous patient who passed away was so touching. Hopefully it will make the harder moments a bit easier. Good for you for finding the time to connect with your patients and making the most of that time.

    1. It was such an awesome find!! *-*

She was really an amazing lady. <3 I'm sad that I didn't get to talk to her more regularly but at least she's no longer in pain anymore.

  8. I’ve tried a strict grocery budget myself, it’s realky hard to stick too. All that fruit looks yummy though. It’s hard to lose someone but at least you got to help them and you knew them. Hmm, I should make a food place list too, hah that sounds like a great idea. I hope your having a great weekend.

    1. They definitely can be difficult to stick to! The thing that drives me most is the need to declutter my apartment, hahaha. :P

That’s true! I’m trying to just remember the good bits. <3

Probably the hardest thing about growing old is seeing everyone else get old, too. I remember losing one of my clients, who weeks earlier had met with me as she was in hopes of finding some part time work. After some missed calls and sending a lost contact letter, her mom contacts us and lets us know that she had a reaction to something and that was that.

I know, I know, let’s keep with the positive and try to look at the today. Sorry about that.

Favorite food? Pizza. When you grow up with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, what else would you think about? Although watching Steve McQueen eat a roast beef sandwich with milk in Bullit is a close second to favorite meal.

Good deals? slickdeals.net . I’m sorta of sorry for your wallet.

    1. I’m really sorry. :[ That’s rough. I hope you’re doing okay! I’m trying to stay positive about it too–thankfully there are still lots of positive moments though!

As my friend likes to tell me (because I can’t eat oysters), “The world is your pizza!”

      hahaha, I’m going to try my best not to go to town–so many great deals… ;_;

  9. I spend a lot of money on food, I work really hard and I like to eat really really really good. But there is nothing wrong with staying on a budget. I’ve been a bit depressed this winter also, I’m trying to bust out of it. I have my good days and bad that goodness this is a good one. I’m loving your new Food Group, That sounds like so much fun.

    1. haha, totally understandable! I’ve definitely been splurging a little more lately because sometimes you just gotta treat yo’self. :P

I hope it gets better for you too! I’m so ready for nicer weather!! :[

  10. Awww, sorry to hear about your patient passing away, and your former librarian. Sounds like the librarian was super cool!
Your grocery budget sounds super hard to do! I don’t know if I could stay that low.

    1. She was like a grandmother to all of us! <3!

I used to stick to it a lot more–it's been a little harder now that I'm living in NJ instead of WV/KY!

  11. Wow! That’s a tight grocery budget! I went for cold medicine yesterday and ended up with over $200 in groceries. Ok, I had a grocery list, too. :) But there are only two of us, so it’s sad how little $200 gets nowadays. We rarely go out to eat, though.
Clarinda recently posted…Join me! Time for the March Ultimate Coffee Date!!My Profile

    1. haha, it can definitely be hard! :[ Food prices have gone up so much (and food shopping is my favorite type of shopping! *-*)! Not going out to eat definitely helps to save a lot though!
      Farrah recently posted…Homemade EmpanadasMy Profile

  12. My grocery store has a discount produce bin, but usually the bananas are the only thing that look like they might be worth salvaging! The day-old bakery shelves, on the other hand….
Hannah recently posted…Baking and rash race decisions: week in reviewMy Profile

    1. Bananas are wonderful though! <3 Mine doesn't always have the best-lookin' bananas, hehe. And yesss to the bakery shelves! *-*

  13. I’m so sorry for the people you’ve lost recently, and yeah, winter in general is such a hard time. I hope sunshine is on its way to you soon – literally and figuratively! Ooh a food group sounds really fun though. :)

    1. Thank you! <3

The food group has definitely been an awesome addition to our lives, hehehe.

  15. Oh no, sending big hugs to you, sweet girl! Thank goodness for friends and food to pick you up!

Hmm, favourite type of food. Probably anything with lots of veggies. I can never get enough!
