Welcome to Travel Tuesday! As promised, after last week’s visit to Horseshoe Bend, we are headed this week to Lower Antelope Canyon (also known as Corkscrew Canyon!)!

Lady in the Wind
Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon formed by erosion of Navajo Sandstone. It’s located on Navajo land in Page, Arizona.

We did a 1-day package that took us from Flagstaff to Glen Canyon/Lake Powell, Horseshoe Bend, and Lower Antelope Canyon and back. (Twas pricey at just under $200, but it saved us many hours of driving, so that was definitely a much-welcomed break after months of driving.)
The package we went with included a 1-hour general tour with Kens Tours. For adults (>13yo), it’s $50.40, which includes the admission price of $40, the Navajo Park Permit of $8, and the Navajo sales tax of 6%.
You can only access Lower Antelope Canyon via a guided tour partly because the rains during monsoon season can lead to life-threatening flash floods. There are 5 flights of stairs that were installed to help with descending into/ascending from the canyon. 
The walking tour is just 1 mile long, and there are tours every 30 minutes, so you can probably imagine just how popular/crowded this place is!
…So yes, definitely touristy, but also absolutely a must-see (in my opinion) at least once in your life.

- Bags/backpacks
- Camera equipment (tripods, camera bags, selfie sticks, etc.)
- Drones/GoPros
- Pets/service animals
- Firearms/weapons
- Umbrellas
(Please adhere to the rules because they’re pretty strict on this!)
Our Navajo guide was super knowledgeable and gave us a lot of great photography tips/tricks! It definitely helped us better capture the beauty of these canyons.

I looove the look of this! I remember first seeing photos like this on computer screen savers when I was a kid and being amazed that anywhere like that could be created naturally!
What was it like being on the tour? Was it super busy…but they move people out of the way while you take photos? I know you’ve been to less famous slot canyons…would you still recommend this one despite their being less famous/crowded options?
To be honest, I might go anyway as it would be cool to chat with the Navajo guide…I am just not sure about being in an enclosed area with a crowd!

Honestly, that’s probably how I first learned of this place too! It was definitely really busy — they run tours every 30 minutes, but people are pretty considerate (or at least, they were when I was there!) about getting out of our photo and following the “treat others how you’d like to be treated” rule — everyone wants photos without rando strangers, so it’s in their best interest to act accordingly! :P
I (sadly) haven’t been to too many other slot canyons (hoping to change this at some point) but I do think this one was really worth it — it was so pretty and the guides were great about telling us more about the area! <3 (Will definitely say that claustrophobia may be a concern there as it does get kinda narrow in some spots and there are a lot of people!)

this is a slot canyon I always have wanted to visit but also worried about how crowded it is. I’m always curious why places don’t allow GoPros. how is it different than a camera?
I do think that supporting the Navajo economy is good so would probably decide to risk going in spite of the crowds.

I definitely like that it’s a way to support the Navajo economy as well! I’m not entirely sure about the reason, but it may be because they don’t allow videotaping without a media permit and most people use GoPros for videos and not photos? (I could definitely be wrong on this, but I thinkk that was the reason.)
This looks incredible. Your photos are absolutely stunning. Do you know why bags and backpacks aren’t allowed? How do people bring their wallets, car keys, water bottle, etc?

Thank you! I think their concern is that the canyon gets pretty narrow in some sections, so with all the tons of foot traffic they get and multiple people wearing backpacks and going through, they can unfortunately scratch up the canyon walls + hit other people. You’re allowed to carry whatever fits in your pockets, so that’s how we held onto our stuff!
