牛丼 (Gyudon / Japanese Beef Bowl)

Welcome to Foodie FridayThis is a revamp of an oldddd old recipe from 2/8/13 (back when I was in medical school!) today–Gyudon (or Japanese Beef Bowl)!

So I have somewhat of a policy in terms of money-spending. Usually, it’s to just never spend anything unless it’s something I really actually need. I have been getting a little more liberal with this lately though, mostly on food, because food keeps me healthy, happy and alive. (As we’ve been learning, death is irreversible. >_> ) After I pass a class, I usually allow myself one “something I want” purchase. It’s usually something little, but it makes me happy. :D Old Navy was having a crazy sale, and I definitely fall victim to cute workout clothes (if I had it my way, it’s basically all I would wear), so I got a pair of pants, a pair of capris, a pair of shorts, a shirt, a scarf, and a jacket for $60. I’d like to think that this was a good deal. *-*

I also got about a pound of pre-cut/pre-sliced steak strips for something like $3 (yay for sales) earlier, and decided to make this, since I kinda just realized that I very rarely seem to make anything with beef in it (unless it’s ground beef). :O Usually it calls for sake, but I didn’t have that since the closest Asian supermarket is a good 2.5 hours away. Tastes great anyway and definitely a good comfort food on a cold day! :]

Did my camera or photography skills improve? :O?!

Gyudon is a Japanese dish that consists of rice topped with beef and onion. It’s sometimes topped with a soft poached egg or pickled ginger. I added mushrooms to this for the first time I made it!

Servings: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 onion diced/sliced
  • 1 pinch sea salt
  • 1 lb beef e.g. skirt steak, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp mirin
  • 2 cups short grain rice

Instructions

  • Cook the rice in a rice cooker (or however you'd usually prepare it).
  • In a large pan, heat the oil over medium heat + add a pinch of salt, then sauté the onions until soft. Turn and stir the onions until they're evenly browned, then remove from heat.
  • Cook the steak in the same pan and sauté until the red is mostly gone, then add the soy sauce + mirin. Reduce the heat + simmer for ~3 minutes.
  • You can add the onions back into the pan afterward and add water or cook off the liquid to adjust the sauce consistency to your preference!

This is so easy to make and reminds me of what I can get at the local Japanese restaurant. I’m shocked that the small number of ingredients creates such a rich flavour.

    1. I’m definitely a huge fan of recipes that don’t require a whole ton of ingredients! :]!

OMG I remember having this for the first time back in 2007 when I went to Japan. It was so cheap, quick and so delicious. Thank you for this recipe, which helped me relive that memory of eating this in Japan. Really tasty and had no idea it could be SO SIMPLE to make!

    1. Aww, yay! I’m so glad that this could do that for you! :D I hope you enjoy it! (I’d love to get to go there someday to eat everything!! *-*)

I finally tried it! I used sake instead of mirin, and riced cauliflower instead of white rice because I’m eating low carb. Delicious!

    1. Yay!! Glad you got a chance to try it! I still need to try riced cauliflower!

Very good! I served over soba noodles bc we’ve been overdoing the rice. And soba takes less than 5 minutes to cook. Next time I think I’ll double the sauce and use half to marinade beef before cooking. But excellent, excellent and easy recipe.

    1. Ooo, love that idea! I’ll have to get some soba noodles to retry this — glad you liked the recipe!! :]
