SUP at Kailua Beach

Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) has been on my bucket list for quite some time, soĀ my friend suggested that I try SUP at Kailua Beach, where the waters were prettier, usually calmer, and also less crowded.

I booked a lesson in Kailua through Kailua Beach Adventures! (I did this right after my Lanikai Pillboxes hike!)

SUP at kailua beach

Yay!!!

Lunch was super good–I decided to go with a plate lunch from K&K BBQ. They have a menu that you can choose from so I went with the Loco Moco and got a drink from next door (passionfruit orange, ahh…). (If you want to try to kindasorta recreate it, check out my Hawaiian POG Drink recipe!)

kklocomocoMy SUP lesson was with Jordan and it was super fun! He packed a cooler with snacks and water and gave me a quick demo/intro to SUP, and then we took our boards out to the canal and brought them out to Kailua Beach.

Here’s the canal!

+ here’s my paddleboard!

I started off kneeling until I got comfortable with paddling. Jordan gave me tips on how to fine-tune my paddling. We paddled out toward our destination–Flat Island!

We got near there a little quicker than anticipated, so we paddled out toward Lanikai Beach before going back to Flat Island.

It was so pretty out there! I was actually still prettyĀ tired from my surfing lesson the day before, but I toughed it out!

I’m a speck!

We walked around the island while he told me about the area and the wildlife we came across, and we ended up paddling out a little farther and catching some waves on our boards before heading back to shore. Twas an awesome time!

Hello, shell of a crab! ._.

My SUP lesson wasĀ $100 and it included:

  • Pickup from my hotel in Waikiki (I was actually living in an apartment so they located a hotel super close to me and picked me up from there)
  • Lunch (your choice of pizza/calzones from Bob’s Pizzeria, a Hawai’ian plate lunch from K&K BBQ, or salads from Bob’s Pizzeria or Kailua Town)
  • 2 hour beach time with free rental of snorkel equipment, boogie boards, etc.
  • 2 hour SUP lesson (ended up being a private lesson!)
  • 15% off any merchandise at their store
  • 12″ x 12″ x 17″ locker
  • Drop off back at your hotel in Waikiki

…In other words, an effing amazing deal. :O I’d love to come back again and go kayaking with them someday!

This was my last full day in Hawai’i, so I gathered with two of my local friends from Na Keki O’ Hawai’i (and their significant others) and we went out for a sushi buffet! <3

  • Have you ever tried stand up paddleboarding? (Or paddlesurfing?)
  • If you’ve ever been to Hawai’i, what’s your favorite beach there?

  1. SUP + sushi is a go for me. I’ve always wanted to try it, but it would have to be somewhere warm (because I get so cold in water!). My dad does it in Mexico and loves it!

  5. This looks like so much fun – and so beautiful! I’m dying to try that here in Alaska on one of our calm lakes, but I haven’t gotten around to it yet. I’m hoping to try it next summer because your post made it sound like such a fun way to spend the day!

  6. I want to go SUP so bad! They have some great places to do it here in Austin but I’d much rather do it in the ocean rather than the lake/river.

    1. It’s definitely worth a try, and honestly, falling in isn’t that bad if you’re paddling in a place where the water isn’t freezing cold! :P I’m definitely a major klutz and it worked out fairly well for me despite that! :P

What a beautiful day out on the water!! Looks like it was a little choppy though? Or was it calm enough to keep your balance? I’ve only every SUP’d on inland flat water…

    1. It definitely was a little choppy, but I was still mostly able to keep my balance! :] It was a lot of fun!
