Seneca Rocks Trail

Welcome to Travel Tuesday! I’m not exactly writing in order because hikes are a little faster to write up than weekend itineraries for ginormous cities, but I promise I’ll get to everything in due time!

This was the second hike I went on after reaching West Virginia on my cross-country road trip! Seneca Rocks isĀ nestled in the Monongahela National Forest and can easily be seen from the highway.

Seneca Rocks Trail

Distance: 3.2 miles (out + back)
Duration: 1 hr + 10 minutes – 2 hrs
Elevation: 800 ft
Difficulty: Easy
Admission: Free
Parking: Free
Trailhead Address:Ā 38Ā°50ā€²05ā€³N 79Ā°21ā€²58ā€³W
There’s a visitor center that you can stop at for more information! I can’t tell you what’s inside the center though because it was closed due to lack of running water in the building, but one of the rangers gave me a map, offered me water, and told me it’d take about 2 hours to finish the hike at a leisurely pace. (It took me under 70 minutes but I was speed-walking.)
This hike is almost entirely uphill, with lots of gradual switchbacks and stairs. The trail is very well-maintained so you don’t have to worry about getting lost or anything, and there’s also plenty of shade, for the most part!
Seneca Rocks Trail bring you to an observation platform at the very end so you can get an amazing view. It does get pretty steep in some areas, so do watch your footing! That being said, I saw a number of kids and dogs climb it, so it’s not bad.
Seneca Rocks is also an awesome place for rock climbing–I saw a bunch of people with climbing helmets headed uphill as well and wished I could join them, but I was short on time and heading to Lewisburg to visit Linda and Please Save A Cat. Maybe someday! There are 375 major mapped climbing routes ranging from 5.0 to 5.13, and there are nearby climbing schools and guide services that can take you up here!
If you're visiting West Virginia and heading past Monongahela National Forest, make sure you check out Seneca Rocks Trail for a beautiful hike! #senecarocks #hiking #westvirginia #wildandwonderful

    Beautiful!

    1. Thank you! :]

  1. That looks gorgeous — and cool! Or maybe it’s wishful thinking. I haven’t really spent any time in West Virginia. Looks lovely.

    1. The shade definitely made it nicer! I was worried I was gonna burn!

  2. I am loving all of your travel pics on FB and IG. We are close enough to WV to make a day out of it but I never do it. Thanks for the push! As soon as it cools off a bit

    1. Aww, thank you! :D It’s definitely been a ton of fun so far! :] Let me know if you ever go out there! I miss WV–hoping I’ll be able to go back to visit at some point again!

  3. The views on this trail are absolutely gorgeous and I love that it’s an easier hiking meaning that it’s more accessible to anyone that wants to give it a try

    1. Agreed! Fairly short too, so it can be squeezed in even if youā€™re a bit pressed for time! :]

Loved the trail to the top of Seneca Rocks. we were even able to take our dog. the trees were beginning to change and it was beautiful. They have a nice wooden platform to sand and take pictures of the beautiful view below. there are restrooms at the trailhead.
