Recharging With My Other Life

Well, it looks like I’ve leveled up another year! (Translation: It’s my birthday today [technically 21st]!)

If you happen to have some spare change burning a hole in your pocket and want to get me something super-special-awesome for my birthday…I’d love it if you’d make a donation to Please Save A Cat! <3

Or buy yourself something on AmazonSmile and choose them as the charity that you support (Please Save A Cat in Maxwelton, WV)! :D! Win-win!

(You can read a teeny bit more about Please Save A Cat in my “How Do You Show Compassion?” post!)

This may be a blogging no-no, but since it’s my birthday, I’m doin’ what I want! :O (I’m double-linking up today with Amanda @ Amanda Moments for Tell Me About Your Town + Jill Conyers @ JillConyers.com/JessicaĀ Joy @ TheFitSwitch.org for Dish The Fit!)

Tell Me About Your Town’s April topic is in honor of Earth Day–anything about your townā€™s scenery/weather/climate, or something eco-ish…and Dish The Fit is…How Do You Recharge?

ucdarboretum

UCD Arboretum!

How the hecks am I gonna tie those two topics together though!?

By talking about Davis! <3

While it isn’t exactly my hometown, I went to UC Davis for undergrad, and spent a considerable amount of time sneaking back up there to volunteer at my internship after I graduated. It’s one of my favorite places on the planet, so I like to think it counts. :] I miss the sunshine and all the green! Summer Davis was my favorite because it was always bright and sunny.

There were all sorts of parks and playgrounds there!

Sometimes my friends would exercise Farrah-abuse.

Sometimes my friends would exercise Farrah-abuse.

dominoes

Or we’d go climb the dominoes!

Ever the eco-friendly town, it’s actually easier (and faster) to get everywhere on bike than it is to drive. There are bike paths and bike circles all over town–hell, there are even traffic lights specifically for the bikers. :O

This worked out really well for me, because I didn’t get a driver’s license until after I graduated from college, and never had a car until I started medical school. I got everywhere through walking, biking, and public transportation, and I miss being able to do that. (Sidewalks are lovely, and I saved so much by not having to pay for gas!)

Bike theft was actually way more common than laptop theft.

I constantly had half a bajillion things on my plate back in undergrad (and let’s face it, I still do now–are we sensing a common theme here?). My friends started calling me “superwoman” and people often asked me how I did all this without dying.

Short answer?

I think it was the fact that I managed to find a balance.

Being in a place that I adored, surrounded by my favorite people and doing the things that I loved makes a world of a difference on your stress level.Ā  Sure, life was always jam-packed, and I always had a ton of things I was doing, but my “breaks” were my other major and my extra-curriculars, which encompassed all my favorite hobbies.

Music and dance kept me sane. So did being able to frolic outdoors. <3

These are all still things I use today to keep me grounded, to de-stress, and to help me recharge. <3

ffjuniorrecital

I miss playing on a legit piano! *-*

Back in undergrad, my friends and I started up Dames & Fellas A Capella, a no-audition a capella group that we kept up for about two years. We’d pick songs and write 4-part arrangements to teach to the other members. It definitely kicked me out of my comfort zone, because normally, I never sing if people can hear me.

This was us covering Norwegian Recycling’s How Six Songs Collide! :] (We randomly acquired an awesome beatboxer the day before this, so we’d never heard him til…this performance! :O )

In senior year, we decided to disband to focus on school (I was taking 10-12 classes per quarter, working 2 jobs, 2 internships and a billion other things. Academic suicide ftw! ._.), but I still found other opportunities later on to keep singing in my life!

And of course, I couldn’t forget Na Keiki ‘O Hawai’i! <3 I was a dancer for 4 years + secretary for 3 years for UCD’s Polynesian cultural dance group! :] It’s where I first learned to dance (hula + Tahitian!).

nkohatseniorrecital

Some of my friends from NKOH decided to surprise me at my senior recital! <3

During my first two years of med school, I taught beginning hula (and later Tahitian) dance lessons in the school’s gym! This is us performing last year in Carnegie Hall. :]

I’ve actually never shared any video or audio clips of me singing, dancing, or playing piano on here til now. (Unless you knew where to look and found my sneaky links. >_>) So I guess today’s the day where I throw a bunch at you! :O All recorded by my supah-fancy (hah) phone!

Positive thinking, however–for someone in med school, I like to think that I’m not doing too shabbily! My love for the artsy-fartsy keeps me going! :]

  • What’s the scenery/weather like in your town?
  • Would you consider yourself artsy-fartsy? :O
  • What do you do to recharge?
  • How do you handle stress?

  1. First of all, HAAAAPPPPY BIRTHDAY, girl!!! Sending you a GIANT birthday hug! And I will make a donation to Please Save a Cat as a birthday gift. I meant to get a card in the mail this weekend to you because I thought your birthday was coming up. I’ll send one this week fo’ sho’! It might be pretty belated, but I love sending cards. :) Also, you are a very multi-talented lady with your extra curricular activities and other hobbies you have picked up in life!

    1. Thanks so much, Kaylin! <3!! You are full of all sorts of awesomeness! :] I'll be sure to let the cats know! ;P Linda recently got 3 new hens, and they all started laying eggs (yay!) so I'm excited to meet em' the next time I get over there! :D

Merry day of your birth! What’s the new stat line for leveling up? Any new abilities? And thanks for sharing your dancing and singing. It may not be a career choice, but you do both quite well.

    1. I’m not sure what the stat line is! I can sew people up fairly proficiently now?! Where would that fall under!? :O

Thank you! :]! Being a singer and a dancer/Cirque du Soleil performer are both pipe dreams that I keep on the side, har har. :P

  2. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I hope you had an awesome one!! Also, those huge dominoes look like so much fun! I want to play! I’ve always wanted to live in a place where I didn’t have the need to drive. I love that you didn’t get your license until after you graduated college. I’m jealous! I would love to live in a place where everything was a bike ride away or I could just take public transportation. Our public transportation system is so unreliable here. You play piano? That’s so incredible! I’ve always wanted to play piano! That’s awesome. AND you were in an a capella group? I want your life. I watched the whole a capella group, and it sounds so cool! And hula and Tahitian dance! You’ve done so many cool things!

    1. Aww, thanks so much, Tiffany! <3 That park is so much fun! I'd love to live in a place again where I didn't necessarily need to drive much. *-* (Someeeday!)

I feel ya on the unreliable public transportation! I'm not sure we have public transportation where I'm at right now, but it is very dearly missed!

  3. Happy birthday Farrah! Ok I’m considering moving to your town just for the dominoes… so cool! Haha I definitely consider myself artsy fartsy – and I’m always wanting to try new creative things. This morning I decided I NEED to get into sculpture!

    1. Thanks, Cat! <3 Aren't those dominoes so awesome? I loved playing on em'!

Yay for the artsy fartsy! <3 I tried sculpting something once and was abbbbsolutely terrible, hahaha. I will leave that to you and stick with music + dance! ;P

  4. Happy birthday! You should double up if you want to even if it isn’t your birthday :)

  5. Even though I started to walk a little this week, I am still pretty much grounded because of the surgery (I get tired as hell), but I simply adore walks in the park. I cannot wait to enjoy the great outdoors again.

    1. Walks in the park are one of my favorite things to do! :]! I wish you a speedy recovery and hope you get to enjoy being outside again soon! <3

  6. Happy Birthday! You are one talented busy energetic lady! Keep it up! Your enthusiasm shines! I love being outdoors and there are days that walking to the end of my dock and sitting breathing in the fresh air are enough to clear my head and smile :)

  7. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I hope it isn’t toooooo filled with medical nonsense. Maybe just a smidge. It is so, so important to keep a part of yourself apart from medschool/work life. Like running became for me when I was writing my thesis, and lifting and such for Alex during med school and now as a doctor. NEVER let your “other” life slide!

    1. Thank you! :]

  11. I’m the same way, I have a million things on the go at all times. It seems to be my personality to say yes to everything and have a hundred jobs. I’ve always been that way. But somehow I still find my balance. That balance is different for everyone. For me even just watching an episode of TV in the evening relaxes me and makes me feel calm.

    1. haha, same here! I think that finding a balance is definitely key to keeping sane amidst the “controlled chaos” (as I like to put it)! :]

  15. Happy Birthday! Hope you have a wonderful day! I’m still trying to find ways to learn to recharge. Balance is a word that’s not really in my vocabulary…I need to learn it haha.

    1. Thanks, Lisa! Finding a balance is one of the hardest things to do! :x I think it’s a constant struggle, haha, but it’ll come with time! :]

  16. Definitely artsy! I did ballet seriously growing up, and I love the visual arts. Some of my favorite places in NYC are the Frick Collection and the Met. I wish I could actually PLAY music or paint or draw, but I content myself with enjoyment now :) Have a lovely arty birthday!

    1. That’s awesome! I’ve only gotten to go to the Met once, but I loved exploring it! <3 And yay for ballet! I think I only ever took one class when I was really little (I scorned anything I deemed "girly" back in the day ._.).

Thanks so much! Hooray for artsy things! <3

  18. Its your birthday, birthday, lalalallalala :) HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! Can I just say how jealous I am after reading this post? You are so, so talented and that hula dancing was so beautiful. If we ever meet you need to teach me! Music also lights up my spirit and I definitely use it as my recharge, de-stressor, motivator, etc. It works for everything seriously ;)

    1. Thanks! I got to take a nap and everything, so I definitely can’t complain! :P

  21. That is awesome how bike-friendly the town is! Fargo is definitely not bike friendly. We only just put in a couple bike lanes on a couple streets, and people don’t know what to do with them. Also, giant dominos sound like a blast. Thanks for linking up!!

    1. Oh man. D: It’s always a little terrifying with the biking when people don’t know how to use them! This is really terrible, but in the beginning of fall quarter, the seniors like to set up couches in the middle of bike circles to watch the freshmen crash whilst trying to navigate them. x_x

  22. Happy birthday! You have such a beautiful voice. =) I’m only very slightly artsy, but I’m about to learn how to use a sewing machine to make things like couponing envelopes!
