5 Ways To Better Your Health

Back in the first two years of medical school, when I was slaving over piles of notes and textbooks every day, mnemonics often rocked my world in terms of helping me to remember things! I’m going to share one with you today on how to live/maintain a healthy life! :D

HAVEN!

Read on and find out how you can win your own bottle of super tasty vitamins! :]

Hydration

As you may well know, my Hydroflask (affiliate link!) is my favorite water bottle of all time–it means business when it comes to keeping things hot or cold! I’ve been trying to keep myself well-hydrated throughout my rotations, so I drag that sucker with me everywhere! It helps most of the time, unless I leave it in the resident lounge/locker room and get too busy to go get it.

Surgery rotations present their own problems too, because drinking too much water leads to a whole lot of uncomfortable-ness when you’re scrubbed in, but I’ve been trying to find a balance!

Activity

I’ve been weekend-warrioring it up lately because my weekdays have been a little crazy. It was a ton of fun, and included hiking in Muir WoodsĀ and up Mission Peak, pole, yogaĀ +Ā Brazilian jiu-jitsuĀ classes, and a pole dance performance fundraiser…butĀ then my klutzy self had to go and slip/twist herĀ ankle, and fall down the stairs.

. . .

Yep. So RICE it is for me. (We don’t have ice packs, so I used a pack of frozen veggies.) Except for the rest part because I kinda need to be able to walk around for my rotation.Ā Oh, med school life.

Incorporating physical activity/exercise into your life is important, but also know when to dial it back and give your body the rest that it needs!

Vitamins

Ideally, you should be getting most of your nutrients and vitamins from your regular diet, but vitamins can help! Small confession–the only vitamins I’ve ever willingly consumed on a regular basis = gummy vitamins.

I had my brother try out the men’s one, but he’s actually a bigger fan of the women’s one (partly because the women’s vitamins don’t haveĀ that sugar coating) and has been coming into my room to steal more while I’m gone. When I’m actually at home, he does something like this:

(staggers over in a mannerĀ not unlike a zombie’s) “I require more nutrition.”

Pretty sure that bottle is not gonna last me a full month at this rate.

But I can’t blame him, because these are super tasty! They taste just like fruit snacks, andĀ are gluten-free, and free of any artificial colors/flavors or preservatives.

Their recommended dose is 6 gummies, which is higher than I’m used to. Each bottle is ~$20 and if you take them as directed, it’ll last a month.Ā This is fairly pricey in my book, so I will likely be stretching out my use of them over the course of 2-3 months. (More likely two, since my brother keeps stealing them from me.)

The gelatin they use is porcine, but they’re working on a vegetarian and kosher version soon! You can find them atĀ CVS, Target, Costco, GNC, Amazon, and many others!

Enthusiasm

So perhaps this isn’t the most conventional, but when you have a zest for life and an enthusiasm to learn and live, I think it makes life that much more exciting, and learning to let go of the past, maintaining a positive outlook on different situations (especially ones that you can’t change), and kicking unhealthy thinking habits definitely helps. There’s so much that we can do and accomplish!

Of course, not every situation will be a good one (such is life), but I like to think that as long as we can learn from the negative ones, it’ll make us stronger and better off in the long run.

Nutrition

I’m a definite fan of promoting healthier dietary habits, and decided to do a Nutrition rotation earlier in my 4th year so that I could better counsel my future patients on how to incorporate little changes in their lives to healthifyĀ their eating habits, from portion control to snack ideas! You can also learn more about this from my Medical Monday’s post on Diet!

  1. I needed this reminder to get back into the habit of taking a vitamin. I’m with you that i try to get my nutrients from food, but It certainly wouldn’t hurt.

    1. Indeed! I like to think this just fills in the gaps! :]

  2. I have tried these vitamins before, they’re great! I do take a multivitamin every day. One of my favorite ways to stay healthy is taking the time to walk outside before dinner at least 3-4 days a week. :)

    1. They’re so tasty! :D! And yay for walks! I miss walking everywhere, haha. I hate that I can’t do that anymore! :[

  3. HAVEN! All so important. I’m a hydrating machine most days since I sit at a desk all day (so consuming water is about the healthiest thing I do at work) but I try to incorporate the other 4 as well!

Sorry to hear about your Ankle :( I know how much that sucks. I fell last week on the ice and twisted mine a bit, as well as doing a number on my upper back/shoulders and a (light) head smack on the ice.

Being clutzy just means you have better stories ;)

    1. That’s good that you are! I’m still somewhat of a cactus on some days, but I’m working on improving on that! :P

It was getting better, and then I decided to be a genius yesterday at jiu-jitsu so I think I have re-effed it up again (sigh). I hope you’re okay! Falling on ice sucks! :[

haha, you raise a good point there! I tripped over a sprinkler head and rolled down my driveway once. Definitely not one of my finer moments…

  4. Ugh!! Injuries! :( I love being active because it makes me feel so good POST work out – and I would be SOOOOO lost if I got injured and couldn’t work out!

    1. For serious! I decided I was fine again and decided to go back to jiu-jitsu yesterday evening and I think I just re-effed up my ankle. SIGH. So much for that recovery process…

  5. Oh no!! Poor ankle! I do stuff like that too– I’m so clumsy! Hope it feels better soon. These vitamins look like great choices!

    1. Thanks, Julie! It was getting better until I decided to try not to suck at jiu-jitsu and re-effed it up yesterday evening! Sighhh.

  6. I love this list Farrah! Yoga is one of my favourite ways to keep healthy too, it’s so amazing! Such a great way to keep active <3

    1. Me too! At this rate, I’m going to run out so quickly! :[

  8. I used to take vitamins every day and somehow got out of the habit. I definitely need to start again! I also drink as much water as possible and the hydroflask helps a lot!
Brittany recently posted…February Progress and March GoalsMy Profile

    1. Me too, but I recently got back into it, and hoping to keep that habit (and the water-drinking)! Yay for hydroflasks!!

  9. I am so forgetful when it comes to taking my vitamins eek! Otherwise, I’m pretty consistent with exercise & eating nutritious meals, except on special occasions of course :)
Meme recently posted…Skillet Greek ChickenMy Profile

    1. That’s good! :D At least you have the exercise and eating nutritious meals down consistently! (I like the everything in moderation thing, so hooray for special occasions! :P ) I’m trying to establish a more regular schedule again, but it’s been a kinda tough time with my current rotation!

  10. I do take a vitamin, you know, as an insurance policy! Recently I’ve been drinking water every morning before coffee or food and it’s made me feel great!
Kelli @ Hungry Hobby recently posted…Gluten Free Vegan Protein PancakesMy Profile

    1. haha, I like that thought–it’s such a tasty insurance policy! :P I’ve been trying to start and end each day with a cup of honey lemon water! :]

  11. These are all great tips! I’m horrible when it comes to taking vitamins…I need to step up my game there. I’ve been making a serious point to stay hydrated lately and it really does make a world of difference.

    1. I’m getting a tiny bit better at taking them daily now that I have some here again–it helps that they taste like candy! ;P

On that note, I’m going to go drink another cup of water! :P

  12. I have been struggling with a healthy lifestyle for some time now, probably because everyone on the internet tries to tell you what a “healthy lifestyle” actually is. Being that I am close to 40, my body has changed so much, that eating healthy is getting harder, because I feel like I need more than anyone recommends for me to eat. So right now, we are on the lets eat whatever we want, but in small portions and that is good enough right now. You are still young, optimisticā€¦..so eating healthy is easy (in other words Im jealous of where you are in life:o)
We do take vitamins however, they are organic and expensive, and we don’t take them everyday to make them last longer as well.

    1. I think a healthy lifestyle is different for everyone–what works for one person might not work for another! I’ve been having a hard time eating healthy lately, sometimes in the form of unintentional starving (I left the house at 4:45, ate a bowl of oatmeal at 9, and didn’t get to eat again til I was driving home at 5). This’ll teach me not to wake up late and forget to stash snacks in my pockets! :[ I’m trying though! Some rotations/months are easier than others. :P

Hooray for stretchin’ it out to make em’ last longer! <3

  13. I love this HAVEN mnemonic. The “E” is so often forgotten but oh so important!

    1. Agreed! I’m trying to remember to always keep that as a consideration in the back o’ my mind!

  14. Sometimes the only thing I eat/drink all day are martinis, olives, and beer. NO SHAME! But on those days I am glad that I take my daily gummy vitamin. I use the Olly brand that (I think) is only sold at Target? Either way, I love them. :)
Alex recently posted…Attack of the JellyfishMy Profile

    1. Alex, I totally approve of your martini, olive, beer diet. haha

      1. hahaha, right?! He knows how to live! :P

    2. hahaha, don’tjudgeme, but I can’t stand olives. :[ Fruits of almost any kind though…that’s a whole ‘nother story! :P I haven’t heard of the Olly brand, but I’ll keep my eyes peeled for that! :P I love Target!

  15. Hydration is HUGE for me. I get dizzy when I don’t stay hydrated, and I know it helps me feel better when I’m sick.

I don’t take a daily vitamin. I do try to eat a mix of vitamin filed fruits and vegetables every day but I vitamin would be good to fill in the gaps.

    1. Agreed! I like using vitamins to fill in potential gaps! :]

  16. I am LOVING the Good Gummies. So tasty. Like healthy candy… yummm… ;)

    1. I always wonder if I should be taking other supplements–I only do the multivitamin right now, but may be adding other things in the future!

  18. I have never tried these. I will be on the look out. I take a multi vitamin daily, never tried a gummy one. Sorry to hear about your ankle, thats the worst. Feel better soon :)

    1. I’m bad about anything other than gummy ones because I suck at swallowing pills, haha.

Thank you! <3 It's getting better day by day!

  19. I take my vitamins when I remember! I think a gummy vitamin would help me remember because it tastes like candy!

    1. haha, that right there is the basis of why I remember to take this one! :P

  20. I take B12 and D3 supplements, but not a multi. I will sometimes do children’s chewables when I’m out on a long distance hiking trip just for the nutrients. Many multi’s have too much iron for my tummy to handle!

    1. That’s a great idea! :P I didn’t see iron anywhere on the list for this one, so it might work well for you! :O
