5 Summer Health Tips

Just for fun, I’m joining in on a blogger linkup by Beauty and the Pitch! This month’s theme is was…

What are your go-to tips, tricks + beauty secrets to beat the summer heat?

I’m probably the last person you want to ask about beauty tips, since I am probably low-maintenance to a fault. (I have been known to sleep in my car whilst sneaking off to volunteer at my former internship, or on an exam table at school to avoid having to drive home during a snowstorm and/or late study session.) The last time I wore makeup was probably at the beginning of 3rd year, on the very first day of my first clinical rotation.

But as far as sharing summer health tips that indirectly/directly lead to better skin + health? I can definitely pass those along! :O

Sunscreen!

I talked about skin cancer prevention earlier this summer, and as the sun is very much still shining away, make sure you remember to apply (+ reapply if out for extended periods of time) to protect your skin!

You can also try your hand at making your own sunscreen with my friend Eva’s DIY recipe here!

Soak in some vitamin D!

Vitamin D helps to stimulate calcium + phosphate absorption from the small intestine, and when paired with calcium + weight-bearing exercise, it helps to prevent osteoporosis!

Go for a hike, or find some kind of outdoor activity to try out! (But don’t forget that sunscreen!)

Protect your vision!

The skin around your eye is thinner and more sensitive, so protect your eyesight with sunglasses that block UVA + UVB rays!

Sunglasses can also help to prevent wrinkles from forming around your eyes, and reduce your risk of getting cataracts.

If you spend a lot of time around or near water, opt for polarized lenses to reduce the glare from reflected sunlight.

Fresh produce!

Browse the local farmers’ markets for fresh fruits and veggies, to whip up a quick salad or a refreshing smoothie or lassi! You can also go berry (or insert your favorite summer fruit here)-picking! <3

Relax & de-stress!

If you’re lucky enough to get to have a vacation this summer, make sure you enjoy it! Spend time with friends, family, and loved ones! Go travel and sightsee! if you want to stuff in a little bit of fitness, don’t forget to check out my post on how to healthify your vacation!

  1. Something that I love about sunscreen is that in addition to protecting your skin, it actually helps cool you off, too!

    1. Ah, so true! :]

  2. These are all my favorite parts about summer… well not the sunscreen… but I’m glad it exists because otherwise I’d burn to a crisp!

    1. heheh, I’m not the biggest fan of putting on sunscreen either, but it’s definitely wayyyy better than burning/skin cancer!

  3. One of my favorite things to do in the summer is to spray my hair with leave in conditioner right before I go to the pool. Not only does it protect my hair, but it also kind of acts like a hot oul treatment and my hair feels so sikly smooth when I rinse it out later in the day. :)

    1. Ooo, that’s a smart idea! <3 Thanks for passing it along! I'm definitely going to have to try that out! :D

  4. I wish I could get some sun. I have the first summer time cold I’ve had in years and I know it’s because I am feeling so rundown from the lack of vitamin absorption due to the fact that I live under a grey dome a.k.a. Scotland lol. So depressing!
Erin@BeetsPerMinute recently posted…How To Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth (Sensibly)My Profile

    1. Oh no! I didn’t know Scotland was full of grey! (It’s on my bucket list of places to visit because everything always looks so darn pretty! *-*)

I’m actually with you on the lack of sun right now too though. It’s summer, but we’ve been getting a whole ton of thunderstorms, and I also haven’t been spending much time outside because I’ve been…studying. haha. Somedayy…

  5. Sunscreen is so critical but the first I’ve ever heard abuot DIY-block! OMG I’m going to have to look into that!! Thanks for sharing and participating xo

    1. Thanks for hosting this linkup! It was fun getting to see everyone else’s posts on the topic, as it’s one I usually don’t really cover! :P

  6. Funny that I read this post right before hitting the gym for the first time ever to do weights… I’m definitely more motivated now that I know it helps in osteoporosis prevention!

Also so glad I got to find your blog, as a possible pre-med student… Looking forward to catching up on your old posts and seeing your new ones!

  12. Great tips Farrah! Thank you!

    1. Anytime! Thanks for stopping by! :]

  13. Great tips! I am a summer girl, I love the sun. I am great about sunscreen on my face and neck, but I don’t worry about it on the rest of me too much, which is probably a bad thing, or will be as I age!
Kristy @Runawaybridalplanner recently posted…The Proficiencies You Can Acquire From Being a RunnerMy Profile

    1. Oh noo! I was kinda bad about it too (these days, I rarely walk outside because hello study hibernation), but I’ve definitely been trying to be more diligent about it! Our skin will thank us later! <3

  14. We have a local farmers market that I’ve been meaning to try out. Will definitely be making a trip down there to try out some smoothies!

    1. What matters is that now you do! <3!

  17. Yes! Sunscreen all the time! (Especially if you’re at higher elevation and near water/snow) People tend to underestimate how much they really need to apply and how often, but some protection is better than nothing! Thanks for sharing!
Tiff recently posted…Summer spotlight | The parasolMy Profile

    1. Agreed! I think a lot of people forget about the higher elevation/snow part!

  18. Relaxing in the sun – hit two birds, one stone ;)
And then after 20 minutes, slather on that home-made suntan lotion!!

    1. Agreed! :D I can’t wait to do that after Friday! <3!!!

  19. Farmers Market fruits are my favorite part of summer! I’m always so sad in the winter when they go away :(
I have a hard time with being consistent with sunscreen….I try and remember to put it on every morning, but I know I miss some.

    1. Me too! :[ I wish they were around year-round! *-*

I definitely forget sometimes too, but I’m making more of a conscious effort to remember! (Baby steps!)

  20. Great tips! Usually I don’t use sunscreen since I don’t burn easily, but I’m really reconsidering that. Hopefully I can get in a *safe* tan this summer while on vacation!
Sara recently posted…How To Make: DreamMelon FloatMy Profile

    1. I hope so! <3 The sun can [unfortunately] damage your skin even if you don't burn! (But burning definitely increases the risk! x_x ) Hope you have an amazingly fun vacation! :D

  21. I always forget to wear my sunglasses–we’re actually going to the beach later today, thanks for the reminder, I’ll get them out now so that I don’t forget about them! For some reason I tend to forget that I even own sunglasses…
Rachel G recently posted…We Bought a CarMy Profile

    1. Yay! Glad I could be helpful! I keep a pair of sunglasses stashed in my car to remind myself that they exist!

  22. We just came back today from our beautiful vacation around the Lake Geneva and Lake Lily. (I’m so relaxed I am surprised I’m not falling off the chair). I realized this time that the key to a real vacation is leaving your laptop and tablet at home! I did sneak a few minutes on a smart phone here and there, but it probably didn’t add up to more than 15-20 minutes per day. When we were eating in outside cafes I would just look at the blue sky, and chirping birds and … mosquitoes (I could do without these) instead of trying to “connect with the world.”

Thank you for sharing my DIY recipe! I still love it more than any store bought variety! And it leaves skin so silky smooth. We spend a lot of time in a swimming pool and in the sun this past week and everybody’s skin is still healthy and soft.
Eva recently posted…A guide to hassle-free picnic with small childrenMy Profile

    1. Ahhh, that’s awesome! I’m so glad you had a great time, and that’s wonderful that you got some time to disconnect for a while (I really think it does the soul a lot of good–we’re so glued to technology these days!).

I’m sorry about the mosquitoes though. Urghhh. :[ They always flock to me whenever I travel to anyplace new!

Of course! :] I’ve always wanted to try making my own, so I’m so happy you posted it! I will get on that once I uh, power through all the ones I stocked up on because they were on super-sale…!

  23. I started to wear moisturizer with SPF about a year ago, and although I can’t see a difference, I hope that my skin will be better off in 20 years!
Jess @hellotofit recently posted…Try This Thursday 7/23 – aerial yogaMy Profile

    1. Oh, don’t you worry! Your skin will definitely thank you for it later on!! I volunteered at a women’s health fair during my first year in med school and they had a device that’d show the amount of sun damage to your skin (all the damaged areas would light up ._.). Twas an eye-opening experience, to say the least. I was super happy to see that my skin wasn’t quiteee as horrible as I thought it’d be, but it was definitely a good motivator to not slack off on sun protection!
