Ultimate Coffee Date: September 2017

Hi everyone! What’s been going in your life? Pull up a chair and come catch up on life with me for the Ultimate Coffee Date!

Ultimate Coffee Date: September 2017

Ultimate Coffee Date: September 2017

If we were having tea today, I’d tell you that…self-care is important. Being able to take time for yourself (and to recognize when you need it) is also a biggie. Long story short, I almost passed out yesterday morning for no apparent reason while I was seeing patients. This has only happened 3 other times in my life, all with likely probable causes. This one was likely just vasovagal, but I can’t think of any stressors that triggered it.

On the plus side, I feel back to my normal self again. It was definitely a weird experience though, and I’m glad I spoke up and told my attending–it would’ve sucked to pass out in front of the next patient I was going to see. …and I don’t have time for this right now becauseee…

It’s crunchtime for studying! I have just a tiny bit over a week left until my exam on 9/11. (Please send good thoughts!)

I recently came to the realization that Muffin has been in my life ever since I took my first set of licensing exams–we’ve sure been through a lot together! I’m glad she still enjoys my company and puts up with my existence, hehehe.

We’ve even worked out a pretty nice system where (because she insists on laying in front of me while I study) she agrees to be my table while I’m taking notes!

If we were having tea today, I’d tell you that…we had our annual retreat last weekend, which is basically the one day out of the entire year that our entire program is free for most of the day to hang out and do something together. Last year, we ended up going bowling because the weather wasn’t cooperating with our initial beach plans.

We went out for lunch and then ran off to a Treetop Adventure obstacle course with ziplining to change things up! I’ve only done something like this once in my life back when I was in medical school–I went with my friend and some of her friends who’d been in town to visit, but they all ditched the course as it got more and more difficult and I was left to finish it alone. :[ Even my friend took the escape hatch.

It was a lot of fun! Definitely helped that this time around, I didn’t get ditched! ;P

If we were having tea today, I’d tell you that…barring any catastrophes, I’m going to be headed to Expo East this year! Is anyone else going? I’m super excited to finally hopefully meet Erica! We’ve almost crossed paths a couple times but the whole clashing schedules thing has made it so it’s never actually happened. This takes place 4 days after my exam, so it’ll be a much-welcomed break!

And…guess who finally has business cards?! (I have them for my workplace, but I figured having some for my blog wouldn’t hurt!)

I designed these on Canva! :] i’m rather happy with how they turned out–at least they don’t have typos like my work ones! (hah…)

If we were having tea today, I’d tell you that…Rutgers is back in session this week(? it sure sounds like it, anyway), which I’d been dreading due to the lack of parking there now will be, as well as the crowds and noise levels on weekends. (sigh) Butttt this also means that I can go back to infiltrating the clubs and the college gyms will be open again, so there’s a silver lining to everything! :P

  1. Yikes on the passing out. Sounds like a sign of stress for sure. You probably are under more stress than you realize because you are used to it. I am sure you will nail your test, but your handwriting looks way too neat to be a doctor’s :-)

    1. Most likely! I thankfully haven’t had another episode since then, so that’s a definite plus!

haha, I’ll have to let my dad know! He thinks my handwriting is atrocious and told me I’d get nowhere in life because of it! :'(

  2. The treetop adventure is so much fun. My son and I have done it a few times. I need new business cards too those are cute. Thanks for joining us for coffee! Good luck on your exams

    1. Thanks! I’ve been trying (+ yay for finally getting to go back to the gym!)!

I hope things have been going well on your end! How’s the start of classes been for you?

  4. The treetops obstacle course sounds like a lot of fun! Perhaps the crunch time is causing more stress than you are aware of? Hopefully, things will be back to normal soon. I wish you good luck on your exam! You’ve had a great study partner.

    1. Thank you! That must have been it! Luckily, I haven’t had another similar episode since then and I’m done with my exam now (yay!)!

hehe, agreed! I’m so glad it’s over now–I’m sure she is too!

  5. Nearly passing out sounds so scary! I’m glad that you’re feeling better. The obstacle course looks fun. Maybe. I’m glad to know there’s an escape hatch if needed. :-D Your business cards turned out great! Muffin looks so cute and cuddly. And nice that she doesn’t mind being your table. lol

    1. The treetop adventure was definitely a lot of fun! I’m super glad there haven’t been any follow-up syncopal episodes–hopefully that was just a one-time thing!

Thank you! I like them a lot! :D I’m glad Muffin is so chill, or I’d probably be missing half an arm! :P

  6. Ooooh, the tree top gig looks fun! I never would have thought of business cards for my blog…great idea!

    1. It definitely was!

hehe, I’ve been toying with the idea for aaaages upon ages–I figured it was finally time!

  7. Oh no! How scary that you passed out. More self care time asap!

So jealous you did the treetop adventure that looks so much fun and something I’ve been dying to try out

This month I’m currently dreading going back to school and dealing with a new classroom to put back together

    1. I’ve definitely managed to fit in more self care time over the past couple days following my exam (thankfully)!

I hope you get to try it out sometime! It was definitely a lot of fun!

Sending good thoughts to you for going back to school + the new classroom! <3

    1. Thanks so much! I’m so glad to be done with the test!! :D!

  9. Oh goodness! It really is so important to look after your health – passing out is scary so good thing you avoided it! I’ve only ever passed out when having IVs placed (which is all due to a vasovagal response as you mentioned!) and only ever for a few seconds.

Your business cards are super cute!

  11. It sounds like you’ve been pretty busy! Sorry to hear about your passing out…not quite the wake-up call you want, but I’m glad it wasn’t more serious!

The obstacle course sounds really fun! I have always wanted to do something like that. I’d definitely do whatever I could to make it to the very end!

Love your business card! I used to have some for blogging but I’m definitely in need of an upgrade. Canva makes life so much easier these days!

    1. I’m really glad it wasn’t more serious either and that I managed to avoid plopping over!

It definitely was a lot of fun! I hope you get a chance to try one out sometime!

I put off making them for the longest time because I thought it’d be super complicated, but hooray for Canva making life easier! :D

  12. Self care is so important!!! I have found that it’s more important as I am getting older. Take care of yourself!
