Ultimate Coffee Date: February 2017

Hi everyone! What’s been going in your life? Pull up a chair and come catch up on life with me for the Ultimate Coffee Date!

Ultimate Coffee Date: February 2017

ultimate coffee date

If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d tell you that…thus far, I’ve completed 5 (of 14) weeks of what one of my senior residents like to refer to as my “death schedule.”

(In other words, I’ve survived over a month of 80-hour work weeks thus far and only (haha) have another 2.5-ish consecutive months of that left to go before I get a break. And oh, what a glorious break that shall be!)

Last weekend, we (me/my co-interns) managed to have our 4th collective hangout since we started residency! :D (We try to do one once a month but it’s been tough to find mutually free days.)

Thankfully, our potluck (some of the food is pictured above!) managed to happen!

If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d tell you that…despite the crazy hours and only getting to see sunlight maybe 1-2x/week, I’ve actually been in pretty good spirits.

I attribute part of this to finally having a somewhat consistent workout schedule again (yay!). Rutgers is also back in session, which means parking sucks again, but I’m actually really glad they’re back because it means I can finally join their clubs! :O

RUPLff

Guess who joined the Rutgers Powerlifting Team! <3!!! (+ the BJJ club and the Salsa club…)

Earlier last week, I briefly mentioned that I’d volunteered at a USAPL meet on my day off–I went to the first practice last weekend! I’ve only ever lifted for fun and haven’t ever had a coach before, so I’m super excited for what this year will hold!

I've always very much appreciated the spotters/loaders at meets, but after being one, I have even more of an appreciation for them. :O

I really hope my schedule will let me compete sometime this year. I want new PRs (and would eventually like to set state records in a third state! ;P )! I’ve apparently unintentionally lost several pounds since residency started, likely because of the inpatient diet (aka no time to eat :[ ), so I may try to cut to a lower weight class. :O

If we were having coffee/tea today, I’d tell you that…I got to go with the sports med fellow to cover the Rutgers gymnastics meet against Cornell, Michigan State + Ursinus last weekend! (Rutgers won! <3!)

It was a lot of fun and thankfully uneventful in the sense that no one got injured. I know I’ll be working on one of the days of the Big Ten Championships in March but I’m super super hoping I’ll be able to cover at least part of it! *-*

(For the record, I used to do gymnastics back in high school, and it still remains the one thing I was completely ungifted in that I absolutely loved.) When people see me now/hear about my interests, they usually assume I did some sort of sport in college, but…I did not. :'( But better late than never?! ;P

  1. Woohoo! NYC!
Congrats on surviving! Reminds me of Alex’s intern year. Or maybe it was his second year… I don’t remember but he had one year of 5 months of inpatient straight.

  2. Wow! 80 hour work weeks. I respect Doctors a lot for such crazy weeks… I’m sure your workouts are what keeps you sane! Get your vacation in some exotic place. You totally deserve it.

    1. They’ve definitely been helping me to destress! ;P And ohhh yes, haha. I’m super excited about vacation! :]!

  3. I’m so proud of you Farrah!! You’ve completed 5 of the 14 weeks; you’re almost at the half way point!!! Happy you found a somewhat consistent workout schedule, exercising distresses me if I don’t workout I’m one cranky girl. I can’t wait to follow you on your new power lifting journey! It is so exciting. :)

    1. Thanks, Mary! <3 I'm glad to report I'm still hangin' in there, and I'm definitely with you there! Getting to work out definitely puts me in a better mood! :P

Thanks so much! I'm really excited too! :]!

  5. I wish I had stuck with gymnastics as a kid instead of falling into dance! Gymnastics will always be amazing to me! I’d be so good now!

  6. I never played sports in college, but I went to community college so we didn’t really have sports :D I didn’t become athletic at all until my very late 20s. I’m always amazed at your regular posting with your busy schedule – even when you do it in advance it still must be a lot! Looks like you guys had a great time at your hangout.

    1. haha, sometimes in my spare moments I just write up drafts and stick it in my email to copy into a post for my blog later! Definitely not a perfect process and I’m sure I mess up the past/present tenses sometimes but…I try! ;P

It was a lot of fun! :D

  8. That’s awesome you’re in NYC right now. Have fun! I did not do sports in college – or high school. I did soccer mostly when I was younger. I’ve taken a couple dance classes in the past few years and I really want to find a new one sometime in the summer maybe? Right now I’m working more on weight loss and getting healthier that way before I add in too much activity. That’s awesome you are on the power lifting team! I hope it’s a lot of fun.

    1. NYC was a ton of fun! :D I started and ended my gymnastics career in high school, hehe. (That probably wasn’t the best time to start, but…oh well. It was fun even though I was terrible!)

That’s awesome! What kind of dance classes? I’m hoping that if/when I get a little more time, I’ll be able to join the ballroom dancing club too! :P

  9. Oh, gosh, so glad there were no gymnastics injuries! I had a horrible experience at the Hyatt near Rutgers a few weeks ago – I hope you don’t have to stay there. :-)

    1. I’m really glad there weren’t either!

And ah! I’m so sorry to hear that! :[ I went there for a career fair last year but I live in an apartment in town so no need for hotels in the area for now, thankfully! If you ever need a couch to crash on and aren”t allergy to fluffy cats, let me know! :O

  10. How did I not know that you’re at Rutgers? I’m in Philly so you’re not too far from me! I hope you have a great time as part of the Powerlifting club! And wow, 80 hour weeks for such a long time….kudos!!

Thanks, haha. Still hangin’ in there for the time being!!

  11. I didn’t play sports in college. I think 60 weeks are awful, I really cannot image what an 80 hour week would be like. Way to go! It will be worth it in the end!

  12. I’m seriously impressed that you’ve made time to blog in the midst of your work schedule these days! Angel’s volunteering as the medical staff at a high school boys basketball tournament in a couple weeks–he’s also hoping there will be no need for his skills!

    1. Thanks! It’s been pretty hard these past couple weeks, but thankfully I did have several posts already scheduled! :] Totally with him there! It was really exciting to get to be right there in the middle of everything but I’d much rather have nothing catastrophic happen and just be there as a “just in case” sort of thing!

  13. Girl, you have been SOOOOOOOOO busy! I don’t know how you fit it all in, still stay sane AND write blog posts?!

  17. OOh Farrah, that would be so cool to do a lifting competition. I’m way too small and shrimpy to do that, but I think it’s so cool to watch people do it. My brother loves lifting heavy too.

  18. Hi Farah! I just thought I’d catch up with you. How are you? Looks like you have a lot of good posts, as usual. I’m trying to find my way through blogging. I’m indecisive at times but, am seeing growth. I was doing very well mid Jan to mid Feb and then down went my numbers after Valentine’s Day. Now I’m bummed! I hope it picks up soon. I’ll have some interesting posts coming up. Check out my latest- pasta dish and Light Tiramisu. I like your feedback!

    Keep being awesome!
