Ultimate Coffee Date: August 2017

ultimate coffee date

I didn’t have time to make my hair wavy, but we’re just gonna go with it!

If we were having tea today, I’d tell you that…they’ve upped us at the office from 7 patients per half-day session to 8-9. I think in our final year of residency, we’ll be at 11. How hard is it to see a patient in 15 minutes, you ask?

It really wouldn’t be that hard if things ran smoothly and people came on time. For the record, I very rarely only spend 15 minutes with a patient because I don’t think it’s feasible to appropriately address 4-5 different problems in a single visit, but one can dream try.

Not gonna lie, I do get/feel kinda bogged down, especially when the first patient of the day is >1.5 hours late. The other day, I had someone come in late enough that she was late for all 3 slots that her children had been scheduled for and wanted complete physicals and all their school and pre-participation physical forms filled out on the spot because she had to turn them in that afternoon.

She got pretty pissed when I told her there was no way I could finish all her paperwork during the visit because I already had 4 other patients waiting. I understand that things come up and you can’t always be on time, but…realistic and reasonable expectations, please!

If you need paperwork done by a certain day, it’s probably best not to book your appointment for the morning that it’s due. ._.

If we were having tea today, I’d tell you that…you’ve maybe already deduced this from the photo at the top of this post, but I’ve been getting to perform with my dance performance group more lately (yay for life as a second year!). I’m super happy that they’re such a relaxed group and let me pop in whenever it is that I can! I’ve really missed dancing so it’s awesome to get to be a part of this group! <3

If we were having tea today, I’d tell you that…I also went shooting again for the first time in years a couple weekends ago!

I actually usually prefer archery because I hate loud noises (that’s how I picked my residency! ;P ), but I had a lot of fun! I did end up with a headache afterward (I guess I wasn’t used to the ear protection digging into my skull!), but twas a small price to pay for glory!

I’ve only gone 3 times in my life–the first time was with my brother back in 2008, and then again as part of a date I went on when I was in medical school because I happened to be parading around as a ring girl to pay for my student loans/livelihood and one of the fighters asked me out, and once more with Linda. My aim wasn’t the greatest back then, but I like to think it’s improving! I tend to be pretty consistent, so my grouping isn’t bad. :]!

If we were having tea today, I’d tell you that…I recently finally got to try Halo Top for the first time! It’s so, so good (and so hard not to eat the entire pint in one sitting…). My friend and I may or may not have gone on an ice cream run last weekend and gotten 12 (only 4 of these were mine, so he’s definitively more obsessed than I am).

  1. Ugh on the super-late family. On the other side of the coin, we left a practice because we always had to wait more than an hour for our appointment. There’s got to be a better way but I know one you are seeing a patient you can’t really start a timer! Thanks for joining us for coffee.

    1. It’s a really hard balance to find! I can definitely understand not wanting to wait over an hour each time for an appointment too–wish I could figure out a better way! I haven’t quite found it yet, unfortunately.

  2. I am so glad that you have found the time to keep up your dance group. I bet that is a fantastic stress reliever for you all. Thanks for joining the coffee date!

    1. Thanks! It definitely has been! :]!

  3. I cannot imagine having the nerve to show up that late for a Dr. appt! Once I was almost 15 minutes late (due to infernal road construction) and almost had a panic attack. That said, they made me wait 45 minutes due to my tardiness, which I happily did. Why are some people such jerks? You girls are adorable in your outfits!

    1. Sigh, haha. I wish I knew! I’ve had patients late before because of traffic or construction, which is completely legitimate–that definitely happens! But ah, realistic expectations is always a plus! *-*

      Thank you! <3

  4. You ladies look great in those dance costumes! Love it! It has to be so much fun for you to squeeze that in when you can! I would be in a panic if i treated my doctor like that- some people have no respect! Wish I could tell you that it would get better :-(

    1. Aww, thank you! :] i’m really glad I can squeeze the dancing in as well–I’ve missed it a lot! :]

haha, I wish! But it’s okay–at least most of the time, people are pretty nice and reasonable! I’ll look for the silver linings. :D

  5. An hour and a half is crazy! If I am going to be late, I call and if it’s going to be more than 30 minutes we reschedule! I give you a lot of credit for your patience! I am obsessed with HALO. It is so good! I like the cookie and cream version and the PB the best- I heard Arctic Zero is okay too but I haven’t tried that one.

    1. haha, right?! I wish, but at least the vast majority of our patients are pretty thoughtful and considerate! :P

It really is–and so very addicting!!

  6. Ugh, I’m glad it’s you and not me handling patients like that woman who was so late to her appointments for her kids. I would definitely want to take the Dr. House approach to telling her how idiotic that expectation of hers was. ;) Also obsessed with Halo Top! I wish it were a little cheaper but then again it’s probably a good thing it’s not cheaper so I treat it more as an actual treat. Not an every day thing.

    1. hahaha, I unfortunately can’t do that. ._. I did actually manage to get 2/3 physicals done and their paperwork completed by that afternoon, but seriously, that was not cool. :[

I wish that too, but like you said, prrrrrobably for the best that it’s more expensive, haha. It serves as a slight deternet!?

  7. Yes! My first 5K was A virtual race :) The Winter Solstice!
Did you know Halo Top just ranked as #1 ice cream pint in the US?

    1. Nice! :D! I’ve never done one before, but I like the idea of it!

I did not! That’s super awesome! *-* It deserves it! :P

  8. You look so great in your dance costume. It’s great to hear that you’re able to get back to dancing a bit more now. That’s exciting!

I can’t believe that mother had the nerve to be pissy after being so late to an appointment. I tend to be late to a lot of things, but never an appointment like that. Meeting up with friends? You bet! Meeting a work? Probably, especially if it’s at 8AM. But an appointment, doctor or otherwise? That’s just rude!

    1. Aww, thanks, Clarinda! :]

haha, right? :[ I like to be 5-10 minutes early for most things, but at the verrrry least, on time or a tiny bit late.

  9. Oh my gosh! Halo Top is my weakness! Sea salt caramel and S’more’s are my current favorite flavors!

I can so relate to you on the patients being late issue. I was the office manager for an OB/GYN practice for 7 years …..total frustration every.single.day!!

That’s some impressive shooting there my lady. Here in the South, most ladies not only regularly target practice, but we carry a weapon as well…. me included! :)

    1. I haven’t had a chance to try the s’mores one yet, but it’s on my list of ones to find! :P

Aughhh, totally with you there! I wish there was a solution!

hehehe, thank you! I have a good teacher! ;P Hoping I’ll continue to improve!!

  10. Ugggghh, that late family would have made me so mad. I am someone who is always early and thinks on time is late because being late is so disrespectful!

I don’t like Halo Top at all (it tastes too artificial and I don’t like the texture) but Jesse loves it. I think vanilla is his favourite flavour.

    1. Agreed! I definitely understand that things can happen, but over 1.5 hours late with zero apology/reasoning and unrealistic expectations was not cool. ._.

Ah, yeah, I know it’s not for everyone. I’ve been vaguely addicted as of late though, hehehe. Haven’t had a chance to try out vanilla yet!

Let’s see, what’s been going on with me. I just moved again, but this time we’re renting a 3 bedroom house in Fremont. Granted, it’s closer to Dumbarton, but at least there’s a 99 ranch a couple of blocks up from us.

I’m about a month away from my powerlifting meet. I’m not going to impress anyone but myself, mostly because I know there are more jacked dudes than me. It’ll be a classic raw event so at least I don’t have to worry about expensive suits and such.

I’ve now been living and working in the bay area for more than 3 and a half years. It feels weird because it doesn’t seem that long ago that I moved back into my parents unemployed and all that jazz. And there’s only so much time in the day to see/do/eat everything all around here.

And lastly it’ll be my birthday this week. I was thinking of just driving somewhere for the day. Too many responsibilities to adhere to with work/family/house to afford to leave for a week or so. So I’ll compromise a bit.

    P. S. You oughta go to a shooting range with one of those high powered rifles sometime. It’s rather insane how powerful those are.

    1. Whatwhat?! You’re in Fremont now? I guess you’re living near-ish to where I used to live before I moved across town! :O I remember that 99 ranch! :P

Sending you lots of positive thoughts on the powerlifting meet! That was my mindset going into the one that I would’ve competed in earlier this year, but I ended up not being able to go. Hope you have fun though! I really like how supportive the powerlifting community tends to be!

I miss home, haha. I still have so many places around town that I have yet to check out!

Anddd happy early birthday! Hope you have a fun day trip somewhere, wherever it is that you end up deciding to go!

haha, one o’ these days! Not sure how I’ll feel about it because of the whole aversion to loud noises thing. :P

  11. Yay I’m glad you’re able to dance with your group a bit more lately. I really want to take dance classes again this year. I never danced as a kid, but I tried an adult class a few years ago and loved it. It hasn’t worked out the last year or so though so *fingers crossed* We’ll see!

I got a coupon for a free Halo Top pint, so I need to find it at the store. I hear good things!

  12. That’s really cool that you’re getting to do dance performances again! I keep hearing about Halo Top ice cream all over the place lately….but of course it’s not in stores here. It’s kind of mind-boggling to me that people would actually show up late to doctor’s appointments…here, even if you have an appointment scheduled, you just have to take a number and wait until the doctor can see you. We typically wait 1.5 or up to nearly 4 hours for my doctor. Good time to bring a book or two! :)

  13. So we got SO tired of people showing up late for their kids’ physicals (and wanting a year’s worth of accumulated problems addressed that we instituted a 7 minute (!) late policy. For the residents too. It has really helped. Patients were informed of the new policy via letter and at the front desk every time they come. People are actually showing up on time. I’m always amazed at how unaware people are about how their actions have a domino effect on a provider’s schedule. Those people are the ones who complain when the provider is running late too!

  14. I have said this before – and I will say it again – I bow down to you and your work ethic!!!
