The opposite of love’s indifference (giveaway!)

This post was inspired by The Little Paris Bookshop, by Nina George. (I’ve actually written a more “formal” review of it!)

You’ve probably heard of the term, “it’s easier said than done.” It applies to so much in life, and to me, it was a very central theme in The Little Paris Bookshop.

As a hopeful-future-physician, I talk a lot about healthy habits with my [preceptor’s] patients, and I try my very best to lead by example.

I usually eat healthy, but allow for “cheat meals” and pigging out with friends when the opportunities arise. I try to exercise 6 days out of the week, and when I can’t get in a full work out, I’m a fan of counteracting the lack of activity by embracing the “what you can, when you can” philosophy, whether it’s through climbing all the stairs in the hospital, or making even healthier food choices than I normally would.

…But when it comes to my personal life, which I rarely write about here (aside from my public service announcement to treat bad experiences as learning experiences), it’s a whole ‘nother story.

Sometimes, it’s because of life in general.

I like to think that I have a semi-good grasp of what a healthy + functional relationship needs, so I think I’m not too shabby at doling out advice to my friends when they ask.

I know what I want in someone else, and I have rather high standards, but…for better or worse, if I reallyreally like someone, I tend to make exceptions if I need to, whether or not it’s a good idea. Sometimes, I also entertain extremely unrealistic thought processes–for instance, the time[s] I chose to believe someone for not weeks, not months, but years.

I should have listened to what my brain was trying to tell me, but I made the conscious decision not to, because at the time, I honestly believed that things would work themselves out, and that it’d all be worth it.

It’s the basis behind why I no longer put much stock into what people say to me. Words are easy, but it’s your actions that show me whether or not you really mean what you say.

Last month, I visited a friend I hadn’t seen in ages–I occasionally refer to him as my ex-who’s-not-an-ex, because we were never officially together. (Please refer to the chemistry-timing graphic–I’m glad that we can still be friends though!)

Something I’ve always really appreciated about him is how he believes in me and encourages me no matter how much I’m doubting myself. He challenges me, and convinces me not to talk myself out of doing the things that I love.

In the most recent case, it was on music. He told me it’d be absolutely tragic for me to give that up because I was so talented [once upon a time…], and that if I could, I should really try to find a way to keep it in my life. He claims that hearing me play is what really sealed the deal for him. :O

We may or may not have super-bummed the majority of a weekend and had a jam session in his apartment because I was somewhat wary of getting murdered in the city at night (sorry, Baltimore).

Here’s a clip of our first attempt at Ed Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud. (Going over the lyrics first might have been a good idea, har har. But OH WELL.)

  1. Well as far as the Balance Bars, I most want to try the mint chocolate chip right now. I’m craving minty chocolately things lately. And I’ve heard of this book, it sounds like an intriguing read! You should have higher standards for relationships–people need to uphold what they say they’re going to do in a friendship and be there for each other. :)

    1. hahaha, oops! I totally forgot to change the wording for the giveaway, but…there should be some mint chocolate chip bars headed your way (once I get to a post office, which should hopefully be this weekend)! <3

I agree! My dad recently voiced his concerns that I'm going to be forever-alone, so he told me to get crackin' on finding someone, ahahaha.

  2. I love reading! This book looks right up my alley!

    1. It was an awesome book! :]

  3. Ohemgee – Farrah – I see(or rather hear) why your friend said it would be tragic for you to give up on music – that little jam session was absolutely fantastic!!!
I am working on listening to my head – because my heart tends to get me in trouble!
    Awesome post!

    1. Aww, thank you! <3! Fun fact! At my interview today, one of the program directors kidded (I'm going to assume that he was kidding) that he was going to ask me to sing after I told him that one of my majors in college was music performance, hahaha.

I'm working on the very same thing! It's so much easier to follow your heart sometimes! x_x

  4. Last weekend we had my son, his fiance and her parents over for dinner (first time since the BIG proposal). We were giving the new couple our words of wisdom as well as saying out loud why we each think that they are a great couple. I brought up listening to the little voice inside and not overriding it or talking ourselves out of feeling that something is wrong. It is easy to say but hard to actually follow. I am much better about it now, but there are still times when it seems easier to override my instincts so as not to hurt someone else’s feelings, but mine get trampled on when I do this. “Growing up is hard to do!”

    1. I’m definitely guilty of that most of the time! It’s definitely something that I’m working on as well–listening to that little voice is usually wise!

  5. Oh girl, this post was deep! I tend to follow my heart rather than my head, which is not always good news….I’m learning to step back and think before saying/doing.

    1. I like these book reviews because they give me a chance to really dig deep, so to speak! :D! I think I also tend to follow my heart, although in recent years, out of necessity (hellooo, med school!), I’ve gotten better about not doing that.

  6. Most advice is easier to give than take! Definitely find a way to keep music in your life. It will be such a good contrast to life as a doctor.

    1. True that! I’m going to try my best to! I don’t have a piano around for the time being, but at least I can still sing in my car! :P

  7. I’m naturally more of a head over heart kind of gal–balance is a good thing, because thinking safely and strategically, while it has it’s benefits, isn’t all there is to life.
Rachel G recently posted…Science Experiment Gone WrongMy Profile

    1. Agreed! I try to maintain a good balance between the two–it does get hard sometimes though!

  8. I’m happy you shared your music again! :) I have totally been with you in listening to what my heart says and not what my head (or even intuition for that matter!) says. I find a lot of the advice I dole out comes from things I have learned along the way myself; so I still occasionally don’t take my own advice, but I always learn from it pretty quick ;)

    1. Thanks! :D Maybe someday, I’ll actually post a 10-second clip on instagram! (Hah.)

Ah, I definitely agree! I think that might be why I’m not too bad at giving advice about certain things. :P It’s because I’ve lived through it and have (thankfully) learned from it!

  9. “Words are easy, but it’s your actions that show me whether or not you really mean what you say.” Yes!! Love this truth!

  10. I love to read and this book looks like a fun read.

    1. It definitely is! <3

  11. You two sound great! Timing is a bitch, but I think we’re allowed to set a dream aside to pursue the one that calls to us the most. You’ll get back to music.

    1. Thank you! :] I like to think so too! I’ll find some way to incorporate it back into my life again! (At least it’s not even permanently gone at the moment! :O Just less frequent.)

  12. Loved your music, you should definitely continue if it’s something you truly enjoy.

My advice that I give most often but have a hard time following pertains to exercise. It’s so easy to tell others how much they should exercise, but then it’s hard to me to do it. I’ve been doing it now faithfully for several months and have lot 17 pounds but now I’ve hurt my right arm and my left foot and leg!! So to the doctor tomorrow and hopefully I can get back to it without hurting myself again.

Very much agreed! It's way easier said than done, but congrats to you on your amazing progress! I'm sorry to hear about your injury, and I hope your arm and leg are feeling better! <3

I would need a book prescription following your dreams.

    1. I recently read Pamela Wible’s Pet Goats & Pap Smears. She was really inspiring, and a great advocate for following your dreams! :]

I need a book prescription for self-confidence. I am always encouraging others, and puzzled when they don’t realize how awesome they are, but I tend to be pretty down on myself. I know it’s not healthy, and I am working on changing it.

    1. I definitely get what you mean–I’m often the same way! I wish I had a good book to suggest for that, but on the plus side, at least recognizing it is half the battle!

  13. I get that whole ex-who’s-not-an-ex friendship thing. Timing sure is a cruel thing, sometimes. But I’m so happy to hear that you have this positive force in your life, urging you to do what is best for you. That is wonderful!

I need a book description for time management – so many things I love to do and not enough time.

    1. I definitely get where you’re coming from! I don’t have a book prescription for that, but epic to do lists make my world go round!

  14. The older I get the more I listen to my head! I need a prescription for taking risks!

I need a book to help me deal with the frustration of taking care of my elderly father 24/7. I’m having a hard time balancing “taking care of me” along with that.

    1. That can definitely be really difficult and frustrating! Is there anyone else around that can help out once in a while so it won’t be as taxing on you?

I don’t know what your father has, but I’ve heard lots of positive reviews about Nancy Mace’s “The 36-Hour Day” (it’s about caring for people who have Alzheimer’s, dementia, and/or memory loss)!
