Staying Summer Strong Through A Summer Slump

I haven’t talked much about fitnessĀ lately mostly because…well, I haven’t really been working out. My “summer slump” is really just my lack of a regular workout schedule (although I’d like to think that moving furniture/a billion boxes and walking a ton of miles almost daily has to count for something!).

After falling down the stairs + spraining my ankle in February and breaking my hand in jiu-jitsuĀ the following month, I figured it was a sign from above to take a little break. I was supposed to follow upĀ on my hand, but my insurance is so useless, it might as well be nonexistent (they graciously offered to cover $16 out of the $2800 bill)…so I cancelled the follow-up appointment, because ain’t nobody got money to pay for another visit.

I’m hoping I can do a curbside consult and/or just stick my hand under the x-ray during my surgery rotation to see how it’s doing, but as a compromise, I’ve been trying to take it easy whilst still incorporating some level of physical activity and attempting to eat healthy (at least relatively so, because hello vacation and delicious noms!).

I got back from Hawai’i a couple weeks ago, and it was everything I dreamed of and more. <3 Part of myĀ wanting to go there was actually also because I wanted to see if I could live there, and…I think the answer is…yes, yes indeed. I don’t think I’ve ever felt so at peace with the world as I did when I was over there.

Before I went, a friend of mine gaveĀ me suggestions on places to go and left off with the statement, “You will gain weight when you go to Hawai’i. It’s unavoidable.”

Challenge accepted!!!

Actually, truth be told, I haven’t weighed myself in over a year, but I was all for proving that you can definitely enjoy an amazing vacation whilst still being active!

I’ve written before on 5 ways to healthify your vacation and I definitely went to town on those tips while I was in Hawai’i!

Sneak in some movement.

I didn’t have a car while I was in Hawai’i, so I traveled everywhere either on foot or on bus!

Try out a class.

I took a bunch of classes–some not so labor-intensive (e.g. Lomi Lomi Massage, Beginning Ukulele), a couple that were right in between (yoga, snorkeling), and some that were rather physically exhausting (surfing, paddleboarding).

Explore./Take it outside.

I did a ton of hiking/walking while I was in Hawai’i! Minus the weekend (aka lazy beach day ;P ),Ā I averaged aboutĀ 8-10 miles per day!

Relax and have fun.

After all, you are on vacation. :P Lazy beach days can be pretty darn awesome!

Pack easy + convenient fuel.

While I did enjoy a lot of super awesome eats (find em’ on my instagram!), I did want to save money at least every here and there, so I brought my own snacks!

I was staying at an Airbnb in a shared apartment, so I’d start my day off with a drink made fromĀ Bob’s Red Mill’s new Nutritional BoostersĀ (e.g. Vegan Chocolate Milk)! Those packs kept me going on the mornings where I was in a rush and/or didn’t want to walk a mile to get an acai bowl for breakfast!

Product highlights:

  • Vegan
  • Gluten-free
  • Probiotics

It’s really hard to choose a favorite, but I think out of all the different flavors, Chai would have to be the one I like the most, partly because it’s a flavor I don’t see as often…but also because it’s so darn good! More recipes to come in the future! *-*

  10. I actually find myself more motivated in the summer time as you can’t keep me indoors! Even though it’s hot, I seemingly thrive in the heat – it’s winter time when I just want to curl up in a ball and sleep, haha!
