Sriracha Popcorn

A New Ingredient for the New Year: Pick a new ingredient that you’ve been wanting to try… and cook or bake up a new recipe in the new year. Are you curious about nutritional yeast, fish sauce, matcha, teff – or maybe even ugli fruit? Show us how you’re cooking with something new (to you!) in 2016.

It was National Popcorn Day earlier this week, and also happens to be Foodie Friday today. This week’s theme is another old favorite: Pinterest Curiosities!, so make sure you check out my co-hosts’ blogs (Annmarie from the Fit Foodie Mama, Esther from Chocolate Runner Girl + Jess from Hello To Fit) too! (I apologize in advance for the double linkup, but yay for more food inspiration?!)

I’ve been pulling 12+ hour days every day, and working on the weekend.. (Such is the life in Internal Medicine.) I am also living at a friend’s sister’s house, so I feel kinda bad about takin’ up her cooking space, so to speak, even though I’m sure she wouldn’t mind.

What I’m trying to say is that I don’t have a “new” recipe, but I do have a backdated recipe I’ve been meaning to post in forever (and currently only have one picture of, but that will hopefully be remedied at some point)–so we’re gonna go with it! The new ingredient of choice is…nutritional yeast!

The little movie theater back in the town where my medical school is (Lewisburg) serves popcorn with nutritional yeast, which is where I got the idea for this recipe.

Sriracha Popcorn

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup unpopped popcorn kernels
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 2-3 tsp nutritional yeast
  • 1-2 tbsp sriracha

Instructions:

  1. Heat the coconut oil in a large pot on medium-high heat (~6-7/10, if your stovetop happens to have numbers).
  2. Pour in the popcorn kernels and cover with a lid, leaving a tiny bit of space to allow it to vent.
  3. Mix nutritional yeast + sriracha together and toss with popcorn to mix!

End-of-Week-ish Recap!

  • I have a new review up of a cookbook I really love–The Homemade Kitchen (Alana Chernila’s second cookbook)!
  • Check out my adventures hiking up/through the Cave of Munits with two of my best friends from college (UCD music represent! <3)!
  • My parents mom apparently decided that I’ve been single for too long and tried to set me up with someone. Here’s how my suspicions were confirmed. >_>
  • My scholarship/blog competition post is live! More details on Monday, but I’d super-appreciate any and all support (e.g. views + shares <3)!

    1. If you’re not a fan of spicy, I’d suggest going with just 1 tbsp (or maybe 2-ish tsp?) of sriracha–better to have it be more mild than to go overboard the first time around! :]

  11. What a great idea! A new twist to popcorn! I will have to try it out when I can actually taste food again…this darn cold!
Hope you have a great weekend!

  13. I love Popcorn, and all the different kinds and flavors the better.
It’s okay to laugh, but in my perfect world I could eat popcorn for breakfast every morning, except it would be calorie free and never make me gain a pound (A girl can dream, right:)
May have to give this a try, I pinned it for future use:)
