As you may well know by now, I’m all about promoting healthier lifestyles + dietary habits, and I’m rather interested in nutrition, so when I was given the opportunity to review Chrissy @ Snacking in Sneaker‘s ebook, I was rather intrigued!

Journey to Healthy Eating (28-Day Nutrition Challenge)

As you may have inferred from the graphic (heh), this ebook is actually a 28-day nutrition challenge! I really liked that she broke it down into 28 different challenges and included action steps for each day’s challenge. It felt a lot more manageable, and wasn’t completely overwhelming. :]

Week 1: Detoxification

I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned my stance on detoxes, but…I don’t really believe in them. You have organs in your body that cover that for you (e.g. your liver + kidneys). So I was happy to hear that she was not talking about juice fasts or colon cleanses, which, honestly, can do more harm than good.

So big hoorays for scientifically-backed strategies ! Thanks for not making me want to bang my head into a wall, Chrissy! <3

She instead talks about different awesome spices + ingredients with nutritional benefits, green smoothies, juicing, hydration. Links to delicious-sounding recipes are included!

Week 2: Planning, Preparation, & Healthy Meals

I’ve been a huge fan of meal prepping ever since I left the nest and moved across the country for grad school. This section includes different tips on building a more nutritious breakfast, lots and lots of different healthy meal ideas and options, portion control, healthy snacks + swaps, and meal planning (including a sample 7-Day Meal Plan at approximately 1500-1600 calories/day)! There’s even a convenient grocery shopping list for the aforementioned 7-Day Meal Plan, and a blank template to write in your own.

Week 3: “Superfoods”

While I am all about superfoods, I think there is a misconception with the general public that superfoods are some sort of quick-fix miracle to better health.

No, they are not. (Thank you for pointing that out as well!)

She does, however, include different ways to incorporate nutrition-packed foods into your diet for more health benefits! Each food comes with nutrition facts, tips on portioning, and recipe suggestions! :]

I will reveal that one of them is seafood, and she even talks about sustainability on there! If you’ve never read my post on my trip to Monterey Bay, go check it out for lots of pretty pictures of sea life/Monterey + a partial list of seafood that’s okay to eat (caught or farmed using environmentally responsible practices)! <3

Week 4: Listening to Your Body & Creating Success

This week is all about learning more about yourself–finding out what works for you, what your body’s hunger cues are, how to practice better sleep hygiene, avoid overeating, social and/or emotional eating, and working on mindset, attitude and accountability.

There’s also a section for references, in case you feel so inclined to read more about different topics that were mentioned. Since I’m a total nerd (and have to read journal articles on a regular basis anyway), I’m actually really looking forward to rooting through these! Maybe I can even use one for journal club in didactics! :O

So what’s the verdict?

I thought this was an awesome ebook, and honestly, at $5.99, it’s a total steal for anyone who’s been thinking of starting on their fitness/health journey, anyone who’s been stuck in a rut and needs to be re-inspired…or really just anyone interested in nutrition + healthier dietary habits! There’s always more to learn, m’friends! You might as well start here! :]

  1. I love how honest your posts are… it’s refreshing to see someone not buying into media frenzy craze of things like detoxes, superfoods, etc.. I have always had a hard time buying into them, and of course I love when someone out there has similar thoughts as me :) Great post, as always!

For serious, the detox/cleanse crazes are driving me nuts! :[ It’s a good thing you’re not buyin’ into em’, because they’re ineffective, unhealthy, and can be pretty dangerous in the long-term. D: I really liked that this book didn’t advocate for any of that, or I would’ve had to email and say, “I ain’t doin’ this review. It disagrees with my soul.” :O

  2. I really like your reviews. Unfortunately I just cannot get into the smoothie/juice trends (or maybe fortunately for my grad student wallet!) because I prefer eating whole fruits and veggies but it’s great to read what you think about a lot of the “trends” because I know somewhere out there, one is going to exist that I actually want in my life!

    1. Thanks, Alyssa! I haven’t ever tried juicing, and am totally with you on the grad student wallet (or lack there of!? :'( ). I’m all for whole fruits + veggies too, but love smoothies on days where I need to just grab something and get going though! :]

    1. As far as I know, it’s e-book only! (The recipes included are links to really delicious-lookin’ foods with ingredients + instructions, so I think that part wouldn’t translate so well with a hard copy! :O )

    I’m glad to hear it was informative but not too “miracle methods” heavy… I always roll my eyes when I read magazine articles claiming that blueberries will solve all your problems, without any other changes.

    May need to check it out as I continue on my fitness journey!

    1. For serious! I cannot stand things that promise that you’ll “detox/cleanse” your body by taking different supplements, or that you’ll lose 20 lbs in a week (…) if you follow their workout/diet plan. I’m super glad that this didn’t do any of that! :]

  7. Interesting review! It’s all about balance isn’t it? Planning definitely helps me a lot esp bc I often make more than 1 meal due to our dietary needs. Fun to review books like this!

  8. Hi Farrah,

    Great motivational post. I recently started eating low-carb/primal eating and so far so good. I’ve actually favor the whole Paleo movement and have always been a no processed food type of lady. But, after having twins, I got suckered into making quick meals, which meant store bought pizzas or boxed meals.

    So now, 10 lbs. heavier, I have to go back to my old ways. It just takes a lot more time to cook the meals, but it’s way worth it. Tonight I had Soluvaki grilled pork chops and a Greek salad, while the rest of my family had that and dined on rice.

    1. Thanks, Elna! :] I think on the whole, eating unprocessed foods + just lots of veggies + lean proteins is the way to go!

      I haven’t been eating as healthily lately, due in part to my rotations sapping most of my spare time + being at the hospital for super-long hours with my preceptor. I’m trying to make the healthiest food choices I can while I’m there though, since they usually have at least one or two healthier options!

I wanted people to see that by eating right to support your liver and kindeys, you support the natural ways your body takes care of toxins – no crazy juice cleanses or anything needed. :)
