Chocolate Blood Orange Chai

I love yogurt, and generally am not a fan of the kind you usually find at the grocery store because there’s so much sugar in it.

Siggi felt much the same way back in 2004, and was homesick for the yogurt he’d had in his childhood, traditional Icelandic yogurt called skyr (pronounced “skeer”), so he decided to start making his own, and siggi’s yogurt was born!

As compared to standard yogurt, skyr uses 4x the amount of milk to create a thicker, creamier, and more concentrated yogurt. The milk comes from grass-fed cows in family farms who don’t use rBGH growth hormones.

I’ve been living kinda in the middle of nowhere for the past couple years, but was pleasantly surprised to discover siggi’s yogurtĀ during my first year here. Granted, they don’t always have every flavor available at my local supermarket, but I’m going to count my blessings.

(Case in point: this was the only flavor that my local Kroger's carried!)

(Case in point: this was the only flavor that my local Kroger’s carried, but I love blood oranges, so yay!)

Every cup has more protein (hooray!) than sugar–even with the flavored varieties! The list of ingredients is super simple, with no preservatives, artificial coloring, gelatin, or high-fructose corn syrup.

siggi’s dairyĀ is hosting a Healthy Holidays recipe challengeĀ for Recipe ReDux members–by posting this recipe I am entering a recipe contest sponsored by siggi’s yogurtĀ and am eligible to win prizes associated with the contest. I was not compensated for my time.

There’s just something about the combination of chocolate + oranges that reminds me of the holidays–it could well be because the first time I ever had the Lindt dark chocolate + orange bar was around Christmas time, but for whatever reason, that combination is one of my favorite ones around.

I realize that hot drinks are usually more the norm when it comes to the holiday season (e.g. Mexican Orange Hot Chocolate), but…if all goes well, I may actually get to be back on the west coast to spend the holidays this year!!! I haven’t seen my family in well over a year, so I’m really looking forward to that and the warmer weather.

In preemptive-celebration of that…you’re getting a cold drink recipe–to be enjoyed on those occasionally warmer days, because I’d like to remain hopeful that it won’t get too cold this year!

I’m still in the midst ofĀ moving to a different state every couple weeks, so one of the few things I have with me is…my blender, as well as some ingredients I had from Choctoberfest. (If you don’t happen to have Barleans on hand, you can sub it withĀ chocolate protein powder!)

Since I’m all about simplicity and no-nonsense recipe these days (somewhat of a necessity when you’re half-living out of your car), it’d be pretty hard to get much less complicatedĀ than this recipe! It takes only 5 ingredients (using ingredients I already had hanging around), and makes two servings!

From all the cow milk yogurts Siggi’s is my favorite. It’s awesome in waffles, cakes and breads! I buy vanilla a lot. But blood orange is such a great flavor too. My daughter loves blood oranges dipped in blood orange yogurt.
