Mochi with Peanut Filling (Lo Mai Chi)

Welcome to our weekly Foodie Friday link up! I’m linking up with Annmarie from the Fit Foodie Mama + Esther from Chocolate Runner Girl to create awesome healthy recipes each week! This week’s theme = Copycat Recipe!

糯米糍 (also known as glutinous rice dumplings / “lo mai chi” in Cantonese / nuomici in Mandarin) is the first Chinese dessert I ever made when I was little! The most common fillings are either a crumbled peanut/coconut/sugar mixture, red bean paste, or black sesame paste, but my favorite is the one with peanuts, so you’re gonna find out how to make that today!

My friend and I were craving these a couple weeks ago and I’d actually set out to make them (I got as far as buying the ingredients) a few months before that, but never got around to it because it’s a struggle to make fancier things when I’m only making em’ for myself.

Our simple solution was to get together to make food, and I’m happy to announce that it was a success! She made supe rtasty Malaysian soup noodles and I improvised a way to make this mochi wayyyy quicker than usual!

I haven’t made 糯米糍  in 18 years (…), so I’m going to have to keep practicing to make em’ prettier, but for a gap of 18 years, I think these turned out really well (and they tasted just like they were supposed to! :] ).

Traditionally, these should be steamed, but let’s be real here, ain’t nobody got time for that (not currently, anyway–maybe somewhere after I’m done with residency?). Did you know you can make mochi dough in about 5 minutes via the microwave? Yay for wondrous discoveries! :P

Prep: Cook: Yield: 30 piecesTotal:

You'll Need...

  • (Mochi Dough)
  • 1 16 oz bag glutinous rice flour
  • 500mL water (~2 cups)
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • (Filling)
  • 1/2 cup flaked coconut
  • 1 cup toasted ground peanuts (or finely chopped)
  • 1/4 cup toasted sesame seeds
  • sugar (optional)

Directions

  1. (Mochi) Mix all ingredients together in a microwave-safe bowl until well combined. Then microwave in 2-minute intervals until it reaches a sticky dough-like texture (~4 minutes total).
  2. (Filling) Blend all filling ingredients in food processor until it reaches a coarse/finely chopped consistency.
  3. Section the mochi dough into 30 equal-sized portions. Flatten them into discs and add a teaspoon of the filling into the center of each. Wrap each of them up by sealing the ends.
  4. Roll each of the mochi balls in the filling ingredients, if desired.

Additional Notes

If you don't want to microwave them, you can also pour it into a greased steaming tray and steam on medium heat for ~20 minutes.
You can technically roll the mochi balls in regular rice flour or cornstarch if you'd like, but simpler works better for me!

  10. These look yummy! I’ve never even heard of them. Every year since I was a little kid my mom has always made sugar cookies (the kind with icing on top), chocolate chip cookies, peanut butter cookies & cream cheese mints. The cream cheese mints are my favorite but since doing a sugar detox a few years ago they are too sweet for me. Guess it’s time to make a healthier and less sweet version!

    1. I think mochi ice cream might be a lot harder to make because you have to roll the mochi skin suuuper thin! I haven’t tried it yet but might experiment in the future–will let you know if I’m successful! :P
