La’ie Point

Remember how I promised you a post about La’ie Point wayy back in the day? Guess who’s finally writing about it now?!

I’ve only ever gone cliff jumping once. It was right before I started med school–part of our class went whitewater rafting and stopped at some point to climb up a bunch of rocks to jump off. I made the mistake of looking down before I went and crud, it was a little hard to continue. (For those wondering, I did eventually jump.)

…Apparently, I didn’t learn from this experience, because I did the same thing here!

La’ie Point is located on the windward shore of Oahu. There’s a legend that a giant lizard (“mo’o”) used to patrol the area and would attack people who passed by.

A legendary Hawai’ian warrior named Kana set out to kill all the mo’o and when he got here, he sliced the lizard into 5 pieces and threw em’ back into the ocean, giving us the 5 small islands that surround La’ie Point today.

My friend Liz stood over by that shrub to take a video of this moment.

In actuality, this isn’t tooooo too high. I think it’s maybe around 30(?) feet, but my mind is really good at talking me out of things–from correct test answers to controlling a planned fall on the beam because I was worried I’d break something if I tried a real cartwheel. Self-preservation to the max, I guess. (This does not explain the non-test-taking ability.)

laiepointJT decided to jump first for moral support (thank you), saying, “Sometimes, you just gotta go for it,” before disappearing over the edge.

…So I jumped after him.

btdubs, I’m in this photo practicing camouflage with the rocks.

…and obviously, I lived, or I wouldn’t be writing about this now!! It was exhilarating, and the water felt so, so nice. I’m definitely glad I did it, even though I was initially kinda terrified on the inside. The way back up has a lot of sharp rocks, so I’d recommend wearing water shoes with the jump…or if you went barefoot like me, maybe have someone throw down your flip flops. (Thanks, Liz!)

In February 2016, huge waves pushed out the ginormous rock that used to sit in the hole at Laie Point. (The hole was originally created by a tsunami!)

One of Liz’s friends apparently swam out there before. (It’s a lot farther off than it looks.) I am not quite so hardcore, and we were about to acquire sustenance on our food hopping tour of Oahu, so swimming was a no-go!

In general? I’m not exactly afraid of heights. Like if I was already dizzy, it doesn’t help. But normally I’ll just get used to it and be like “oh look, it’s the ground. I wonder if it will be my friend…”

    1. hahaha, I generally hope that it’ll be my friend! :P

  1. I am TOTALLY scared of heights hahaha. That’s actually what my blog post tomorrow is all about :P

    1. I definitely can be too, but I just couldn’t pass this one up! :P

  2. Not afraid of heights mostly, but deep water kind of freaks me out. I would be like you, want to do it but terrified to do it. I hope that I could do it at least once though, to say I did. It looks beautiful!

omg. Oahu is so beautiful. It’s a great place for this summer. It’s so hot that I just want to soak in water. The cliff jumping seems so great. Lol.

    1. It was a ton of fun! <3!

  3. So I’m definitely afraid of jumping off of heights, but I’m not always nervous around heights. If I spend too much time looking down, I definitely get really … gulp… nervous. :)

    1. The moral support definitely helps!

  5. I would love to go cliff diving but I think I should learn how to swim first lol. I’m not afraid of heights but I also don’t think I should look down before I jump.

    1. Learning to swim would definitely be good! I don’t think I would’ve wanted to jump if I didn’t know how! (+ looking down was definitely my mistake, hahaha.)

  6. Yep, totally afraid of heights. I don’t think anyone could convince me to go cliff jumping!
