Ginger Almond Milk Tea

Welcome to our weekly Foodie Friday link up! I’m linking up with Montana from Pretty Lil Mudder, Annmarie from the Fit Foodie Mama, Emily from Whatever Floats Your Oats, Esther from Chocolate Runner Girl, and Cassandra from Powered By Bling, to create awesome healthy recipes each week! Today’s theme = Healthified Hot Drinks! Make sure you hop around to check out all the amazing recipes in this link up and feel free to add your recipes as well!

One of the things I’m sorely lacking over here in a fairly homogenous small-ish town is the food diversity. I can’t complain that much though because there’s still actually a sushi restaurant here, as well as a pretty amazing Mexican restaurant that’s actually comparable to socal food.

I was very much spoiled by the food diversity in the Bay Area, so living out here has taught me to branch out and learn to make the things that I miss. (Of course, this isn’t always entirely possible because certain ingredients are required for some, and there isn’t anywhere around here that actually sells it.) One of the radiologists I was working with told me about this awesome international market over in Cincinnati called Jungle Jim’s, and I really, really want to make a trip out there at some point! <3

Since it’s super-fun and cold out these days, I’ve been living it up with my hot soups and chilis, as well as with my relatively impressive tea collection. Throughout high school and on, my friends and I would often congregate at milk tea shops, which are fairly extremely prevalent in the Bay Area. A lot of them are open late, and they serve teas in pretty much any flavor you could imagine (including some you’ve probably never heard of), and all kinds of Taiwanese-style or (rarely) HK-style snacks.

A regular milk tea!

Our favorites were the places where you could customize how much sugar you wanted in them (because then I can ask for none!). :O I’m less inclined to crave the cold ones at this time of year, so I decided to combine two of my favorite hot tea drinks from said tea shops! <3

Ginger Almond Milk Tea

Ginger Almond Milk Tea
Ingredients:

  • 2 cups water
  • 3 tbsp freshly grated ginger
  • 2 bags strong black tea
  • 1/2 cup almond milk*
  • 1 tbsp almond powder or 1 tsp almond extract
    (Ginger Syrup)
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 3/4 cup organic coconut palm sugar*
  • 1 cup fresh ginger, roughly chopped

*Just for the record, this is highly adaptable. I tend to like my milk teas less sweet, with more tea flavor, so if you want to titrate it down with more milk or water, go for it! If you have a hot water boiler, you can just stick the tea bag straight in the cup to steep!

Instructions:

  1. (Ginger Syrup) Bring the water, sugar and ginger to a boil. Stir to dissolve the sugar, then reduce heat and let simmer at low for ~45 minutes. Strain into a jar for easy storage!
  2. (Tea) In a small pot, bring water to a boil, then add tea bags and lower heat. Simmer for ~3-5 minutes.
  3. Add 1 tbsp almond powder or 1 tsp almond extract and stir in 1 tbsp ginger syrup (or adjust to desired taste). Add milk and serve!
  4. *Alternatively, you can just bring the water and ~2 tbsp grated ginger to a boil, then add the tea bags and stir in a little honey (to desired taste). Top off with milk and then serve!

I love ginger! In fact, I’m a ginger who loves ginger ;) I think having red hair makes me love all orange things… carrots, squash… I bet the ginger syrup would make a great xmas present too!

    1. hahaha, that’s awesome! :P I never even thought about the gifting part, but you’re right! Great idea! :]

  1. I am just getting into tea and I LOVE ginger – this will be a good recipe to try!

    1. Awesome! I hope you like it! :D I love ginger as well! <3

  2. This sounds great. My daughter will love it and it will save money versus Starbucks each morning. How long are you living in the small town? Is it for residency? Headed back to SoCal? I love living in places with a vibrant restaurant scene. Not sure I’d love being in a small town.

    1. True that! Starbucks every morning would definitely get really expensive!

For my first 2 years of med school, I lived in a tiny town with a population of 3000 for 2 years. This year (for my clinical rotations), I’m living in a town with 21k (so it’s definitely a lot bigger! :P ). I actually really like living in a small town, since a city just has wayy too many people for my liking–I do love the food diversity it offers though! I’m hoping to get back to CA for my residency! (Fingers crossed for the bay area where my family is, or Davis! :)

  3. Hi Farrah! So I drink tea everyday instead of coffee, and I’ve been wanting to fancy it up a bit. This is the perfect way to do it with stuff I have on hand. Do you have any recommendations for fun beverage spots in SF from your days in the Bay? Believe it or not, other than the regular coffee shops and DAVIDs TEA, I’ve not tried any place for tea. Hope you have a great weekend!

    1. I grew up about an hour outside of SF, so most of the places I know of are back there! :O

I tend to default to Yelp when I don’t know of specific awesome food places in the area, and Wonderful Dessert & Cafe, Belly Good Cafe & Crepes, Craftea, Cool Tea Bar, and Sharetea all seem to have gotten pretty good reviews! :]

I hope you have an awesome weekend as well!

No seriously, there’s so much diversity in the food out here, I really am becoming spoiled. Super Duper Burger is fantastic, and it easily beats In-N-Out (is that blasphemy?). Hell, most places in the Mission are comparable to my grandma’s style of cooking. And the ramen, the burmese food, some of this indian food…

    1. Yeah, just rub it in, it’s cool. >:[

  4. I’m in Missouri right now and I totally feel you on the food diversity part! Milk tea is such a guilty pleasure of mine :)

  5. I love this! I’ve never been to a tea shop, I don’t think! I usually take my tea black or with just a bit of almond milk- love how adaptable this recipe is :)

  6. I’m a fan of tea pretty much anyway you can fix it, so I’m going to have to try this. I love almond milk, but I haven’t ever thought to try it in my tea. Yum!

    1. Me too! :D I need to make this again soon!

  11. Oh yum! This milk tea looks so satisfying! I love how this can easily be customized to your liking as well.

    1. I’m all about customizing when it comes to milk tea! The ones in the stores are usually way too sweet so I like it when they offer options on sugar, heheh.
