Chocolate Green Smoothie

May’s Recipe ReDux theme is on kitchen staples: What favorite kitchen staples do you now make from scratch – but in the past you purchased? Show us your best DIY recipe for keeping cupboards, fridge or freezer stocked with healthy basics. Think homemade frozen waffles, salad dressing, broth or other kitchen essentials.

I don’t know how the weather is over where you are, but…I’m all sorts of overjoyed that summer is finally around the corner (cannotttt wait til boards are over though *-*)!

Honestly, I’m not sure if this counts as a kitchen staple(?), but I’m gonna go with it, because…

  1. I’ve already shared my super-easy 3 ingredient pancake recipe.
  2. Smoothies are a total staple when warm weather is back in my life.
  3. This month has been riddled with shelf exams and practice boards exams (8 hour exam yesterday, 4 hour exam next Tuesday, 2.5 hour exam next Friday), so in my book, the easier/quicker the recipe, the better.

And what better way to incorporate more greens into my life than with a green smoothie?

I made my very first green smoothie back in 2010, and documented the recipe a year later on this blog. That is, in essence, my “base” recipe (bananas, spinach, milk), and from there, you can soup it up with whatever the hecks you want (e.g. go crazy on more frozen fruits + toppings). This is about as versatile a recipe as it gets. :O

I decided to keep it simple, and just switched up the soy milk so that I could use up my So Delicious Dairy-Free Chocolate Coconut Milk! :D (Translation: I’m still on my grocery ban, and have spent $10 on groceries since the beginning of April. I’m finally thinning down my pantry/kitchen! :] See how I stay so darn frugal here!)

  2. Your smoothie looks pretty good and I’ve learned two thing here. I never thought of freezing our bananas for smoothies (great tip) and I always use coconut milk but never thought to look for chocolate flavor before! Thanks :)

    1. I picked it up on a whim because it was on super-sale a little while back, but it was a wonderful discovery! :D

And yay for frozen bananas! I buy em’ when they’re discounted (aka getting pretty ripe), and sometimes can’t eat it all quickly enough, so I freeze what I can’t finish, and bam! Smoothie time!

  3. Kitchen staple or not, green smoothies rock and yours sounds awesome! I really want to try that chocolate coconut milk. Good luck with exams! I’ve been living the good life, exam free for many years but next year I’m going to have to renew my board certification- ugh!

  10. Chocolate pretty much goes great with anything! :) Smoothies are a popular breakfast staple at our house during the Spring/Summer months.

    1. Agreed! :D They’re perfect for this warm weather! <3

  11. What exactly are hemp hearts? I make a similar smoothie minus the hemp hearts. I’ve never heard of them!

    1. They’re seeds from the hemp plant that are high in essential fatty acids, amino acids + protein! :] (They’re also called hemp seeds, but I call them either of those interexchangeably. :O )

  12. Mmm, chocolate coconut milk sounds delicious. Green smoothies are the bomb.com!

    1. Indeed they are! :D!

  13. I don’t think I’ve ever used ‘hemp hearts’ before … I’m going to have to try that! Same with chocolate coconut milk!! I have a spinach smoothie recipe on my fridge, so I’ve been meaning to get better about green smoothies and being sure to ingest my vegetables :)
