8 Chinese Recipes To Try This Weekend

Welcome to Foodie Friday! I’m linking up with Annmarie from the Fit Foodie Mama, Esther from Chocolate Runner Girl + Jess from Hello To Fit to create awesome healthy recipes each week! This week’s theme is Heritage Appreciation, which is a throwback from one of the Foodie Friday themes we did back in 2014 when we first started this link up!

If you’re reading this on Friday morning, I’m either rounding on my patient and writing up a note on her, or at my veryyyyy last interview as we “speak,” so please send some good thoughts my way! ;P

I have to send in my match list next month, so I am constantly mulling over my options. (I have no idea what to do right now because I like so many programs. Tis a good problem to have, but goodness, making this list will be difficult.) Hopefully, March will bring good news though! :]

That being said, I don’t have a new recipe to share with you this week because I’m on an inpatient rotation and rarely get to see the light of day. (Kidding, kinda-but-not-really.)

I’m at the hospital for 12+ hours a day, and recently got hired to put together several presentations to be presented to medical schools all across the country (what what???), so between that, getting in daily reading so I don’t suck at life on my rotation, co-writing an article for another site that FM Student got onto the radar for, answering a billion emails, chasing down next month’s rotation, finding one last elective, and test-running a new question bank series, I’ve been goin’ a little cray-cray. And guess who’s going to be driving back here before the crack of dawn to work on Sunday? This girlllll. I’m just a tad stressed.

(Let’s just say that sleep has not been happening much lately. Controlled chaos, m’friends!!!)

But it’s cool! Since this blog actually started out mostly as a private blog/place for me to dump recipes, I have several old recipes to share from back in the days of yore when Fairyburger wasn’t ever shown to the public! If you want to check out all the Chinese recipes on this blog, go to my “chinese dishes” tag!

Tis also a reminder to myself to please one day go back and fix up my old posts…

Surprisingly enough, I have more than 8 Chinese recipes hanging out on my blog, but 8 is considered lucky in Chinese culture because it indicates prosperity, so we’re goin’ with it! (It sounds really similar to the word for wealth/success in Cantonese.) Chinese New Year is coming up in less than a month, and for the first time in 5(?) years, I actually get to spend it with my family!

Stir-Fried Egg Noodles
芥兰 (Chinese Broccoli)
葁醋牛尾蛋 (Sweet Rice Vinegar Oxtail & Eggs with Ginger)
醋溜魚片 (Fish in Vinegar Sauce)
炸醬麵/자장면 (Zha Jiang Mian/Jajangmyeon)
窩蛋牛肉飯 (Eggs & Beef Over Rice)
擔擔麵 (Dan Dan Mian)
韭菜蛋/韭菜豆腐 (Eggs or Tofu with Chives)

End-of-Week-ish Recap!

  • What’s new with you this week? I’m hoping to catch up on comments and blogs soon, but bear with me here. It’s been a bit hectic! ._.
  • How do you deal with stress and having 2349827394 things you need to do? I tend to deal with it in the same way that I play Diablo–charge straight in and start hacking and slashing working through each task until I finish em’ all!
  • What dish would you make to celebrate your heritage?

  1. Yay – happy Friday and best of luck! You know, I don’t venture much into the Chinese recipes much, if ever. I need to pick one of these and give them a try.

    1. Thanks so much, Jenn! These are some of the only Chinese recipes I know how to make–I need to branch out and learn others! :]

  2. Basically any Chinese/Malaysian/Indian vegetable dish I’ve ever tried has ruined me forever for bland boiled white midwestern veggies. I try to get as far away from any of my ‘heritage’ food as I can because it’s basically the blandest food ever invented. The Dutch Americans of Michigan are mostly known for Oliebollen and serving ham on buns at funerals and all other community gatherings–at least, that’s what I know based on my family. They are also known for not being able to take spicy food. My uncle literally sweats when there’s something as spicy as ketchup in his meal. I thought that was just a family legend until I saw it happen. My Mom’s side of the family is more of a mystery, I don’t know where they’re all from, just that my Grandma was adopted but her adoptive parents were from the south and bacon grease and fried chicken features heavily in her food. Now THAT food tastes okay. :P

    1. hahaha, oh no!! If that were the case with my heritage foods, I’d totally shun it too. x_x I didn’t grow up around spicy foods all that much because my mom wasn’t a big fan of it, but in more recent years, I’ve been adding more of that to my diet! :P And hooray for adoptive heritage foods!? Fried chicken is kinda glorious, heh heh heh. :]

  3. Hang in there Farrah! Wishing you the best!!!
I’m not good with handling the stress of 324082374803 things. If you find a good solution, let me know to ;) Just take it on step at a time and nix the things that really don’t matter!

    1. Thanks so much, Rebecca! I think it went well! :]

haha, I unfortunately haven’t found much of a strategy other than just wading in and gettin’ it done step by step! If I find a way to temporarily stop time, I’ll definitely let you know! ;P

  4. The Zha Jiang Mian/Jajangmyeon looks amazing!!! I dont know if I will get to try it this weekend, but I will try it for suer!!! thank you for sharing your yummy recipes!

    1. Thanks, Diana! I haven’t made that since grad school, but I’m definitely gonna have to make it again at some point (I need to update the pictures in my old entries!)! Let me know how you like it if you get a chance to make it! :]!

  5. GOOD LUCK and congratulations on being done/almost done with interviews! SO EXCITING!!!!

    1. Thank you so much! It’s so nice to be done (at long last)! :D! They’ve been fun, but my goodness, it’s been tiring with all this traveling! (I didn’t actually have to travel for this one, but those couple crazy weeks in November and December were more than enough!)

  6. Oh these look amazing! Pinning for later, adding to must try list!

    1. Thanks so much, Autumn! <3!

  7. I love chinese food, so I’ll definitely have to try some of these. Especially since I’ve started the road to rice/noodles stir mastery ;-)

Hope you’ll have a breather soon, I’ve been totally swamped (and slightly overwhelmed) in the last week as well.

    Have a nice weekend!

    1. Sweet! I hope you like em’! :D!

Thanks so much! Having that one day off yesterday was really really nice, and I got out way earlier than I thought I would today, so I’m feeling a lot more rested! :] Hope you got to take a break this weekend!

  8. Yum!! How cool that you have these posted. I don’t cook enough Chinese food. I love it, but it’s not in my comfort zone yet. Practice makes perfect though! I certainly love to eat it!
Julie @ Running in a Skirt recently posted…Fashion Friday – Navy Vest & Floral ScarfMy Profile

    1. Thanks, Julie! :D Chinese food definitely isn’t in my comfort zone either (sadly)–I haven’t made any in ages, but I need to branch out again–hopefully soon!

  9. Homamde Dan Dan Mian?! Can’t wait to try it!

    1. That’s one of my favorites! :D I need to make it again so I can update the picture! :P

  10. Sending lots of good thoughts and vibes your way for your interview! You got this! Great roundup of Chinese recipes here. :) I like how you actually included the Chinese symbols of the names with them.
Kaylin@EnticingHealthyEating recently posted…Friday Favorites: Be Goofy with your Significant OtherMy Profile

    1. Thanks so much, Kaylin! :D I think it went well! I like trying to include them when I know them so I can hold onto what little Chinese I can still read and write. (As long as I can still order off a menu, I’m still okay… :P )

  11. I love Chinese broccoli, but I can never get it to taste the same as they do in the restaurant. It’s one of my favorite things about ordering Chinese….I pick out all the broccoli before anyone else can get it! Luckily for me, my hubby and daughter don’t mind. ;)

Heritage Appreciation was one of my favorite weeks we did. I added mine as a throwback!

    1. Yay for Chinese broccoli! I can’t wait til I’m living in a place where I can get that regularly again! :O (Well, technically I am right now, but once I’m settled somewhere again, haha.) I’m glad your family doesn’t mind! ;P

This was one of my favorite themes that we did too! :]! Thanks for adding yours in! <3

  12. We love making homemade Chinese, we actually made it last Friday, but we usually stick to “fried” rice, egg rolls, and wantons. Sometimes a sweet and sour chicken or something else too but we made so many of the other things we are already eating for a few days. We do stir-fry and other things just not those nights. We really have to branch out and try some different things at home too. Thanks for sharing!
Sarah recently posted…Savory Sweet Potato PorridgeMy Profile

    1. I’ve never tried making sweet and sour chicken, but that’s on my to-do list! I’m still not that comfortable with making Chinese food, so I really need to learn to branch out too!

  13. Girl, your life sounds a little like mine right now, but for very different reasons!
I pray that things all come together for you with the perfect rotations! I know you will do amazing!
These recipes all look awesome! I need to get more adventurous with my Chinese cooking…I had some bad experiences as a kid with my mom (who is not really much of a cook) trying to make some and they did not come out so great.

    1. It’s been kinda crazy, but thankfully I’m still alive! Still no word on the rotation that’s supposed to start less than 3 weeks from now–I’m getting really scared. ;_;

Oh no! :[ I feel your pain! My dad got a little adventurous with some dishes (not necessarily Chinese dishes–more of just “let’s use up stuff in the fridge” dishes), so I have some trust issues, hahaha.

  14. yum!! Chinese food (traditional kind) is one of my favorites. I love the Fried Daikon cakes best, but also congi, xiu mai, and the lotus rice ! great post :D
tianna recently posted…Goodbeing Box Review ♥ JanuaryMy Profile

    1. Oooo, I’ve never tried making any of those, but I really need to try! I want to learn to make dimsum! <3 The only dimsum I've made before = egg tarts!

  15. I am totally feening for Chinese today, I’m going to have to try my hand at it!

    1. Hope you had an awesome meal! :D!

  16. So exciting that you are getting to the end of interviews!!
Mmm I’m loving your round-up of Chinese recipes :)
Jess @hellotofit recently posted…5 Recipes That Showcase Cultural HeritageMy Profile

    1. Thanks, Jess! <3 It's a huge relief--hopefully I'll get to start cooking again after this rotation(?!)!

  17. I’m having Chinese food tonight! I should have seen this post sooner & I could’ve had one of these! Thanks for sharing.
Leslie recently posted…Benefits of Chocolate That May Change Your PerspectiveMy Profile

    1. I’ve been having it a lot more now that I’m home–I need to learn to make dimsum next! *-*

  18. You are one busy girl! I can’t wait to hear how it’s going turn out and where you are going to end up next. I just recently discovered that Chinese food is a bit hit with everyone, so I’ve been cooking a lot from the Jaded Trees Cookbook (I have it too). It’s a fun way to experiment with foods we have never heard of before!

    1. I have draft posts doctored up (har har) for when I find out where I’m going and all that good stuff, but lots of lead-up posts are coming up at the end of this month and through February! (I’m kindasorta finally reviving Medical Mondays! :P )

Yay! I can’t wait to use that book to make more Chinese recipes! (I haven’t made Chinese food in a million moons!)

  19. yes i love trying out authentic chinese food, thank you!!
also, how do we find out the theme for next friday?

    1. Hi! :D So glad to have you joining us! I usually post next week’s theme at the bottom of each post! :]

I also typically try to keep this page (http://www.fairyburger.com/recipes/foodie-friday/) updated with the next couple months’ worth of themes–it’s allll the way at the bottom, so there might be some scrolling to do! (Sorry!)

  20. Happy Sunday Farrah! They all look super tasty but the Zha Jiang Mian really caught my eye! Good luck working on your match list!

    1. Thanks so much, Sonali!

I’m going to have so much trouble figuring out the middle of my match list, hahaha. I like to think it’s all gonna work out the way it should though! :]

  21. Thanks for sharing these recipes, they look delicious and we love this kind of food in our house, juicy and full of umami. Try not to work to hard, but I know that you will…..I love reading your blog, I don’t know you, but I am proud of you. I feel like I do not know a lot of people that are trying to make something of themselves and you are and people around you are obviously recognizing that. Keep on….keeping on, and trust me, as you get older, you get less and less sleep, its inevitable:o)

    1. Thank you so much, Mandi! <3! I try to throw in breaks every here and there to keep myself sane (I was telling my interviewers about those on Friday, haha)! I'll continue trying my best! And ah, that glorious and sadly-elusive sleep--at least I have practice in the whole no-sleeping department, I guess! :P

  22. This weekend??? Try every night for the rest of my life! I love Chinese food and these sound delicious.

    1. hehehe, thank you! :D I hope you like em’!
